Honestly, this is my favorite kind of stranger to encounter; the kind that's very generous with their opinion, but every time you think you've got them figured out, they pull a hard left on you. 10/10

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 10 months ago

While still on the meter, of course

Racism, check. 'No one wants to work anymore,' check. Ice cold take about celebrity drug addict, check.

You could have this same experience in the United States but it wouldn't be framed as a fun experience. This is like a typical Joe Rogan listener.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

Yeah, but they had the extra thrill of being hostage in a car, with little recourse but to witness whatever diatribe would come next. So it's Joe Rogan, but you can't turn it off.

who needs podcasts when you can get a cab?

side note, how do people get into podcasts? they are all just dudes talking to each other. it's so boring

[–] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago

Most podcasts aren't even dudes talking to each other it's more like talking over each other so they can be the center of attention, I hate the annoying loud group of men half screaming bad jokes at each other trying to be funny and fake laughing

[–] panathea@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 10 months ago (2 children)

It helps if you have interests

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

sadly when I do have interests, those podcasts are just small talk with a tiny dose of actual info about my interest.

I'd rather watch a 4 hour essay about said topic than 40 minutes of some dudes chatting unscripted

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I can't seem to find a podcast centered around endlessly scrolling social media sites.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

There are plenty of podcasts with women, you just have to scroll down a bit

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

no offence, but at best they are still boring.

it's just people yapping.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

That's literally all human communication.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 months ago

and most of Shakespeare etc

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Clearly you just need to listen to dudes talking to each other about Star Trek instead

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

only if they actually talk about Star Trek, rather than doing smalltalk.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

$0.02: much like AM radio (is/was), it's basically a "2nd screen experience." Put it on in the car or while you're doing something else. Most of these do not deliver enough information or laughs per minute to demand your full attention. The exception are programs that are meticulously scripted, narrated, edited, produced, and sometimes acted, like NPR and the occasional oddball thing like Nightvale.

I enjoy Breaking Points which actually covers current political news critically https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LkUaBttFtg

[–] AlDente@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Heck yeah, Breaking Points is awesome! I especially like the episodes hosted by Ryan and Emily.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I love Ryan but Emily is truly as snakey as it gets. She will change her position based on whatever show she's on. And she refuses to say on Breaking points what she says elsewhere. At least Saagar isn't changing his position based on whatever talkshow he's on and he's racist everywhere.

[–] AlDente@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago

Oh, interesting. I don't watch a lot of politics media, mostly just Breaking Points, so I haven't seen her on any other platform. I'll look out for her appearances on other shows. Thanks for the insight!

You find the ones that aren't boring and listen to those.

Of course they're just people talking to each other. It's an audio-only medium! Some of them are boring and some of them are entertaining.

Have you never heard of talk radio? I feel almost like I'm explaining music or movies to somebody who's never heard of them before.

[–] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 10 months ago

I once had one that constantly switched radio stations in like a five second cycle and farted on the whole ride. I'd take even the most boring podcast over that.

Side note, I'm listening to a true crime podcast at the moment, and I really do enjoy it.

[–] SpiceDealer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 months ago

They are many types of podcasts. Just got to find one that fits your interests and captures your attention.

[–] Junkernaught@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 months ago

Maybe try "If Books Could Kill" - it is two dudes talking but they're both hilarious and the episodes revolve around reviewing airport/shitty books. Their relationship/interaction is great.

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 29 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I once caught a cab in Belfast and, in the 15 or so minutes, the driver revealed he was a former paramilitary fighter, and recounted a conspiracy theory about the sinking of the Titanic having been faked as an insurance scam.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

They really went the extra mile on the scam to put a boat on the bottom of the sea. Say what you will, but you gotta give it to them for their commitment to the bit.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It's especially high-effort considering that the front fell off and is now nowhere near the rest of the boat.

[–] raynethackery@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

That's not very typical, I'd like to make that point.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Ive heard the world bank/some kind of monetary policy theory, but I don't think I've heard the insurance scam before.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

1: Sell a bunch of tickets

2: Sink ship

3: Insurance pays out the finished value of the ship, obviously greater than building costs, plus you still have the ticket sales.

4: Guaranteed profits! Invincible even!

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Simple as...

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

What an interesting sounding human being

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 10 months ago

I was in Scotland earlier this spring, its not just Ireland that this could happen in
