Two things: Competing colonial interests and the orthographic differences between Spanish and English

The Spanish Empire took control of the Philippines and named the named the islands Las Islas Filipinas or just Las Filipinas which is still today used in Spanish to this day. It was named for the Spanish king at the time of the conquest: Rey Felipe II. Why the change from FE-lipe to FI-lipinas? I don't know.

Towards the end of the 1800s, The Spanish Empire is crumbling and their last remaining territories (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and Las Filipinas) is taken by the USA. The US changes the name to the English-inflected The Philippines because English for, some reason, uses to two "F" sounds: "F" and "PH." Spanish only has one: "F."

OK, this is a tough one and what I'm about to say might get me some dislikes. Let me just say something that might soften the blow: Fuck Rowling, her transphobia, and the bigots that defend her wretched views. Even if she decided, in an alternative timeline, to keep her loudmouth shut, she would still be the scum of the earth for her views on trans people. I repeat, Fuck Rowling.

Now, with that out the way, let's address the crux of the issue. I know that many of you in the LGBTQ+ community grew up with the franchise and enjoyed it long before Rowling exposed her true colors. If you're LGBTQ+ and you decide to reconcile, in some way, with the franchise without directly supporting Rowling, you're well within your rights to do so. The nostalgia you feel for something that brought you joy in your youth is yours to keep. No one, not even the creator themselves, can take that from you. As for the products themselves? You can: buy the books secondhand, pirate the movies, pirate the EPUBs if you have an e reader and buy fan-made merch from LGBTQ+-friendly sellers.

If decided to not reconcile with the franchise, you're also well within your rights to do so. Rowling has to made aware of the damage her views have on people. Demonstrate the hypocrisy of writing about a group of outsiders finding a place of acceptance and discovering their true selves and espousing bigoted rhetoric towards a discriminated group wanting acceptance for their true selves. There's plenty of other fictional universes you can draw your attention towards (more on that in a moment) that are far less problematic and worthier of your time.

If you're an ally (like myself), it's best that we don't engage with the franchise all together out of support. For me, this isn't a problem since I didn't engage with the franchise all that much in my youth (I was more of a LOTR fan). If you do decide to reconcile, much of what I have already said still applies.

In short, the question of reconciliation is a personal matter. So long as Rowling isn't benefiting, you should be happy with your decision and the stand you take. As for alternatives? Well...

Proof that membership in one out group isn't an indicator of an ally.

The Telepathy Tapes (hosted by Ky Dickens) makes the false claim that, among others claims, nonverbal autistic children have telepathic abilities and that is revealed through a method called "spelling to communicate." "Spelling to communicate" is a rebrand of the now discredited therapy method known as Facilitated Communication.

Any rss reader recommendations, preferably cross-platform and FOSS? Also, I'm not a scientist; at least not yet. I'm what you would call a bedroom science enthusiast. I do hope, however, to become a legitimate scientist in computer science someday.

I'm going to use three fields as an example: computer science, biology and paleontology. How do keep with interesting developments in each of these fields? Which journals are the most reputable in their respective fields? How do I know that the journal is reputable? If the journal is reputable, how do I know that a particular paper isn't a fraudulent paper that managed to slip through the cracks?

Can't wait for the endless "end times near! look at this recent event" that are going made concerning this recent ruling. /s

Can't wait for this to happen to the AI labs themselves. They're the Thomas Edison to our Nikolai Tesla.

Damn, I've gotten to a point in my life that I forget that April Fool's Day exist.

Is this only in the EU? On my end in the US, it's still full price.

Edit: My dumbass forgot it was April Fool's Day. Ignore this comment.

Lolita Express National Airport or Epstein-Trump National Airport. Either one should do.

Hubris, mostly. The success of her brainchild went to her head and this made her open her large trap for the whole world to hear.

Lars? Lars Ulrich of Metallica fame? Why would he get mad over fans liking music? When did this happen? The Napster case, while bullshit, at least had something of a leg to stand on but this is just absurd.

I often hear that mixed-use zoning (i.e. Euro-style walkable urban planning) is illegal in the US. Zoning laws will always prioritize auto-centric and oil-friendly infrastructure. But which laws specifically prohibit human scale development and how can we get them repealed? What laws can we enact in their place?

I know that some of you are going to comment about going to see a doctor before taking such a medication but don't worry. I will very much go see a doctor before I take it. Now for the main post...

I'm in my late 20s but I'm one of those that suffer from early hair loss. Think Patrick Stewart and Jason Statham. I've taken Minoxidil before with some results but not that total restoration that I'm looking for. After some thought and hesitation, I've decided to take finasteride. I want to know, if you've taken finasteride before, what was your experience? I've heard that it might give you "down there" troubles. From the little research that I've done, it only affects about 2-3% causes if on the standard 1mg dosage.

If you haven't noticed already, I'm a cishet man and (I might be wrong but) most of the replies are probably going to be from other cishet men. However, I also know that many trans women also take finasteride to combat alopecia so, if you're a trans woman, don't hesitate to leave a comment about your experience.

I'm starting to plan for the long-term with the idea to move out of the US, eventually. Having watched a lot of urbanist content, I get the impression that Amsterdam is the ideal city. However, I think other European cities get overshadowed. Specifically, Scandinavian/Nordic cities. How do Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki compare to Amsterdam and other Dutch cities? Can I get around with just walking and cycling? What's the public transit infrastructure in those cities like?

Additionally, I'm of Cuban descent, so will I face any racial discrimination? I'm pretty sure that Scandinavia as a whole isn't racist, but I don't doubt that I will have isolated encounters.

Now you don't need expensive equipment to debunk flat earthers!

To be clear, I don't subscribe to the idea of "Nothing to Hide." It's a bullshit argument. The reason why I'm asking this is because I want to be able to explain why it's bullshit. I don't like the fact that many people, including ones in my family, are willing giving up their right to privacy simply because they've become accustomed to convenience that modern technology has afforded them. I, myself, have been guilty of these but I'm actively taking steps to take back my privacy and potentially help others as well.

Bonus question: Many people will retort with things "Do you want criminals walking our streets?" or bring up an anecdote about how Flock, Ring or any other surveillance companies' cameras helped solve a crime or found a missing person. Flock themselves have a blog post series called #SolvedStories where they list so-called "success stories" about their cameras solving a case. Of course, I don't want criminals walking our streets and, sure, those stories might pull my heartstrings but what's the bigger picture?

I've got an old Mongoose mtb that looks like good e-bike conversion project. What's the best kit for this? Best battery?

By "modern" I mean every model made after the T480 and T580 (which is what I have!). The reason why I'm asking is because I'm thinking about buying a laptop for my younger brother for his birthday in a couple of months. The idea is that he'll use it for school work and browsing. He'll be entering high school soon so I want to buy him a laptop that last him a good while. I feel the newer models suit this criteria a bit better since I don't expect to tinker around with it though I do intend to introduce him to Linux with it.

From what I've observed is that the newer Thinkpads are still well regarded from a general consumer perspective but disregarded by enthusiasts. What do you guys think of the newer models?
