No book reader would store their books like that you fucking moron. They'd have as many as they could fit crammed in there. Maybe if you actually read more you wouldn't need AI to do your thinking for you.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's so you can tell at a glance what an interesting and quirky person they are!

[–] Darkonion@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Most of the titles seemed to be about pets or the objects that serve them. Such a full rich life.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 2 points 1 day ago

Shit like this makes me wonder if AIs convincing people to kill themselves is really such a terrible thing.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Justine's bookshelf is a boring person's bookshelf. AI makes you boring.

[–] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

The XKCD book is fine, but it feels lile reading Guineas Records, so it's not really a sit down and read kinda affair.

"You can ask chatgpt how to wipe your ass since you're unable to think for yourself."

[–] katze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 37 points 3 days ago (5 children)

I have actually seen people in online discussions quoting chatgpt about this topic.

That's just a shotgun blast of random books.

[–] christian@lemmy.ml 49 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

fill the shelves based on what it knows about you

The results on her shelves:

  • Do you struggle to be creative?

  • How to steal art

  • EXTREMELY ONLINE

[–] christian@lemmy.ml 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Superintelligence, please put books on this shelf that suit me! (gets a picture filled with "Accepting that you're a stupid loser fuckface", volumes I-XV)

[–] dragonlover@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

In defense of steal like an artist, its more of a self help book about learning to like the process of making things, not literally about how to steal art.

Hilariously its also very anti AI

Why though? I genuinely don't know what the use case is here. If you have a bookshelf it already has your books on it, you could take a photo of that. If you wanted a list of book recommendations, a text list would be more useful.

[–] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 87 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh wow, that's so cool. Definitely worth the $2 trillion spent on AI so far.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 39 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Also the knock off effects like computer parts quadrupling in price, the ecological damage, fucking over local power grids, and speed running propaganda.

[–] mad_lentil@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Don't forget further entrenchment of state and corporate power over our lives!

[–] GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I've seen billboards saying "many new datacenters are designed to reuse water" like... OK? that's ONE aspect of it. you're still installing natural gas turbines and diesel generators and taking enormous amounts of electricity...

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 10 points 2 days ago

Not to mention 'many' is vague and probably doesn't apply to the one who paid for the billboard or it would say which one. It is like having a sign that says 'many chefs wash their hands'.

Cool, but the one roght here is the most important one to me at this moment.

"we swear we didn't train on copyrighted works but for pure coincidence we can generate an exact copy of the cover of such copyrighted work"

[–] dumnezero@piefed.social 54 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This is less meaningful than filling bookshelves in Skyrim.

[–] lemmyman@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hey chatgpt, make me an image of a bookshelf with 15 copies of The Lusty Argonian Maid

[–] dumnezero@piefed.social 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[–] NathanDerWeise@feddit.org 72 points 3 days ago (3 children)

That's uh, not how you fill a bookshelf

[–] NathanDerWeise@feddit.org 16 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Also, I've read "What If." It's pretty good.

I had to fight the urge to hold my finger on the pictures to make the mouseover text appear.

It is if you only read for the purpose of being able to say that you read

[–] cecilkorik@piefed.ca 9 points 2 days ago

Performative bookcasing.

Is there a Venn diagram for people who are into Ai like this and people who go to strip clubs and think the stripper is "into" them?

[–] decended_being@midwest.social 30 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Also, most books are not presented on bookshelves like that. Spine out, usually.

And like, why have to take a picture of an empty bookshelf? Just have your slop machine generate the shelf too

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Or literally just ask for a bulleted list...

(You know, assuming one isn't already capable of finding books to read for oneself, looking at human-generated recommended reading lists, or asking real people for recommendations)

You can tell she outsources all of her brain activity to ChatGPT just from her not questioning the placement of books.

[–] harmbugler@piefed.social 21 points 3 days ago

"Now please read the books and tell me what I would have experienced reading them"

[–] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 10 points 2 days ago

What kind of person puts a recipe book on a bookshelf in the first place. Or a coffee table book? Can you imagine asking a friend for book recommendations and they suggest a cookbook? What about an interior design look book?

I'm not saying a friend should never suggest these kinds of books, but if I asked a friend to "fill my bookshelf" and they suggested those I would be confused. Also, steal like an artist being present is the ultimate irony.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

These are just marketable books, which makes sense for statistical model blob.

Don't we already have perfectly good recommendation algorithms? Not to mention the more social alternative of asking for recommendations...

Absolutely devastating to have "Extremely Online" on the list.

I read this a bit differently. How much does the AI agent actually know about me? It probably has internal directives to not disclose exactly how much information it - or the parent company- has profiled, but prompts like this might be a workaround to learning how much they've really got on me.

[–] GoTeamBoobies@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Best new relationship I've formed this year is with my local bookstores owner. She knows what I've been reading and we talk about what I'm looking for. My favorite books I've read recently have come from her. Humans > machines

[–] sinza@piefed.social 16 points 3 days ago

Wow! I guess AI was worth all that water!

...seriously, what's the point of making it an image aside from posting a (probably unpaid!) ad on Twitter?

[–] bisby@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Generating a list of books isn't hard or impressive. Taking the known cover art for those books and displaying it in a layout doesn't require fancy ai either.

Also not sure why you'd want this beyond just the list
