A 20-year-old man allegedly tossed a Molotov cocktail at the home of Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, before the sun rose on Friday, according to statements from San Francisco police.
The suspect, who allegedly threw the fire bomb at the $27m North Beach residence around 4:12am, has been arrested but not identified. The same person allegedly threatened to torch OpenAI’s headquarters in the city. No injuries were reported.
The San Francisco Police Department wrote in a statement on Friday morning that the agency responded to a “fire investigation” after the man allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s residence. Law enforcement said there was a “fire to an exterior gate”, after which the suspect fled on foot.
About an hour later, just after 5am, police responded to reports from a business in the Mission Bay neighborhood, where OpenAI’s headquarters are located, about a man “threatening to burn down the building”. Officers said they recognized the man as the suspect from the earlier incident and immediately detained him.
OpenAI, best known for making the popular ChatGPT chatbot, confirmed the incident in an emailed statement. “Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt,” a spokesperson said. “We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe. The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”
OpenAI sent a note informing employees on Friday morning about the incident, and told them there was no immediate threat to them or other offices. The note also mentioned that there would be increased police and security presence around its Mission Bay offices.

WASHINGTON, April 8 (Reuters) - U.S. carmakers say rules under consideration by Brussels could keep full-size pickup trucks including the Ford F-150, the Chevy Silverado and the Ram 1500 off European roads, according to a letter seen by Reuters.
Andrew Puzder, the U.S. ambassador to the bloc, told the Financial Times that the EU plans to change safety rules that could breach the spirit of the trade deal struck in August between the United States and the EU if they prevented some American vehicles from being sold in Europe.
The letter from the American Automotive Policy Council, which represents General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, noted the EU in August agreed to reduce or eliminate non-tariff barriers and provide mutual recognition of vehicle standards as part of the trade deal with the Trump administration.
The group said proposed changes to the EU’s Individual Vehicle Approval process would degrade access for U.S.-built vehicles sent to Europe. “As demand grows for certain vehicle types not commonly found in the EU, such as large pickup trucks the IVA program has been employed more frequently for those vehicles,” the letter said.
The automaker group noted an alliance of safety and green groups has been pressuring the EU “to end so-called ‘loopholes’ that allow large ‘American-style’ pick-up trucks to be sold in Europe.” Europe’s leading nonprofit clean transport and energy advocacy group, Transport & Environment, said large American pickups and SUVs accounted for 7,000 vehicle sales in the EU in 2024. The group has argued that allowing more U.S. SUVs and pickups “to be sold with far lower safety and air pollution standards would be a betrayal of all EU citizens.”
Lol. Decade old voice assistant outperforms cutting edge slop machine
“Humans have been keeping time as far back as 3500 B.C. ChatGPT is still figuring it out.
Last week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared on the show Mostly Human to talk about the future of AI, his company, and humanity as a whole. The interview was relatively standard fare—the host, Laurie Segall, got Altman on the record on the demise of Sora, OpenAI sliding in following the Pentagon’s spat with Anthropic, etc. But at one point, she asked Altman to react to a viral video posted by TikTok user @huskistaken in which he asks ChatGPT’s voice model to time him running a mile. The chatbot very obviously makes up a time instead of actually keeping track.”
