They’ve completely thought this through to their conclusion already. We’re the ones who haven’t.

I think a lot of people are realizing that the richest of humanity is up to some evil shit. A great many people also listened to what these people have said and are incredibly disturbed. You are not alone, I am not alone, and this entire sub is not alone. I think the first steps to take are:

  1. Show how big the anti-elite movement is to the people in it
  2. Make a plan of action

The free market is generally pretty good at allocating scarce resources

I disagree. Heavily. This may be based on my own experiences, but reading about how Capitalism reaches a point of overaccumulation only to collapse, wherein people cannot work, makes sense, and is the reason this year is so gruesome. I have read about how grocery stores will get rid of food simply because they overproduce and then don't have enough to give out. You should do some reading on the Great Depression and unemployment. The simple question of "why can't people work even if they really want to?" has much less to do with government intervention and much more to do with the intrinsic parts of Capitalist production.

This is quite long so I have provided links.

This might belong in some circlejerk sub, but I think it's somewhat clever. Basically, if AI datacenters get shut down, the power that would've been used to generate AI slop could be used for magnificent things. I mean, it's purely clean energy because instead of using gas or oil, you take energy that COULD be used for something useless and put it to better use. Think of all the applications.

  • We could power countless electric cars, trains, and bikes.
  • We could power countless medical devices like pacemakers and defibrillators.
  • We could power countless lights in people's homes.

All this could be accomplished by not building massive datacenters. What's more is that there could be countless gallons of clean drinking water used for surgical cleaning and chemistry that would otherwise serve to cool the amount of datacenter power. Think of all the possibilities!

If only Sam Altman could understand this...!

Welcome to the club.

It's complicated, and maybe I wrote too soon. I admit that this exact phenomenon and its discussion are very nebulous. But I see that there is talk about the growing loneliness problem in the United States, Japan, Korea, and elsewhere. This is caused by:

  1. People not wanting to raise children in today's world. This is because of wealth inequality, which is the result of overaccumulation from the bourgeoise and weakening of the proletariat. This is explained well in Blackshirts And Reds by Michael Parenti. There is also the problem of climate change that the book also brings up, which also dissuades parents from having kids.
  2. People not having enough money to raise kids. Again, this is because of the weakening of the proletariat. Rights like parental leave, like all other political rights, are not simply bestowed by some higher power, but are the result of a compromise between the owning and working class, where the owning class forfeits some of its power due to massive strikes and protests. This lack of power goes from parents to their kids. TL;DR In the United States, Korea, Japan, and elsewhere, men and women are overworked. And while a small amount of people have a massive amount of money they don't need, the rest of the people can't even afford to have children. This is because of the logic of Capitalism, where money is pursued instead of everything else, and everything is turned into money, which translates into power.

Boredom? I'm not bored. I'm fucking terrified of the government and the people behind it.

Capitalism makes so many things terrible that you just have to go and fight against one of them, even if it's only one part. Of course it's technically Capitalism that made AI so horrible, and altho ideally neural networks are a very cool technology, practically they must be fought against to the hilt.

I’m very worried about this tool and who gets to control it.

I'm worried most about the insane power it uses. Just shut down the damn data centers.

Why do you need images that are so perfect? Why can't you just be fine with doodling?

The philosopher Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king. Said Aristippus, "If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils." Said Diogenes, "Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.

I wish this sub didn’t allow low-effort meme posts because it’s such a brain rot circle-jerk.

There are plenty of articles that are written out that you can read. AI takes immense energy to operate, for one. It uses a lot of water. Go down and read what journalists have written, and you'll find that there are solid points against AI development that name-calling will not do justice.

The business of a king separates him from the world...

It stands for "The (U)nited (S)oviet (S)ocialist (R)epublic (W)ill (R)ise (A)gain"

Sometimes, I'd scroll Reddit because something would link there, but in the case of making a new account, I can't post anything, even comments because there's a minimum karma limit on almost every sub.

The deal is that Lemmy doesn't have the number of users that Reddit has. I suppose I'll make new communities. That'll help.

I downscaled it this time.

I was originally going to put this into the Log, but it might be unwelcome.

You want a way to rattle image-generation Boosters? Most of the arguments they use can be used to defend Googling an image and putting a filter over it.

  • "All forms of media take inspiration from one another, so that means it's fine to Google another image, download it, and apply a filter to call it mine!"
  • "Artists are really privilieged, so it's morally OK to take their art and filter it!"
  • "Using filtered images I downloaded from Google for game sprites will help me finish my game faster!"
  • "I suck at drawing, so I have to resort to taking images from people who can draw and filtering them!"
  • "People saying that my filtered images aren't art are tyrannical! I deserve to have my filtered images be seen as equal to hand-drawn ones!"

AI Boosters use a standard motte-and-bailey doctrine to assert the right to steal art and put it into a dataset, yet entice people to buy their generated images. When Boosters want people to invest in AI, they occupy the bailey and say that "AI is faster and better than drawing by hand". When Boosters are confronted with their ethical problems, as shown above, they retreat into the motte and complain that "it takes tons of time and work to make the AI do what I want". Remember this when you find Boosters. Or don't, since I doubt the sites where they lurk are worth your time.

I want to apologize for changing the description without telling people first. After reading arguments about how AI has been so overhyped, I'm not that frightened by it. It's awful that it hallucinates, and that it just spews garbage onto YouTube and Facebook, but it won't completely upend society. I'll have articles abound on AI hype, because they're quite funny, and gives me a sense of ease knowing that, despite blatant lies being easy to tell, it's way harder to fake actual evidence.

I also want to factor in people who think that there's nothing anyone can do. I've come to realize that there might not be a way to attack OpenAI, MidJourney, or Stable Diffusion. These people, which I will call Doomers from an AIHWOS article, are perfectly welcome here. You can certainly come along and read the AI Hype Wall Of Shame, or the diminishing returns of Deep Learning. Maybe one can even become a Mod!

Boosters, or people who heavily use AI and see it as a source of good, ARE NOT ALLOWED HERE! I've seen Boosters dox, threaten, and harass artists over on Reddit and Twitter, and they constantly champion artists losing their jobs. They go against the very purpose of this community. If I hear a comment on here saying that AI is "making things good" or cheering on putting anyone out of a job, and the commenter does not retract their statement, said commenter will be permanently banned. FA&FO.

Alright, I just want to clarify that I've never modded a Lemmy community before. I just have the mantra of "if nobody's doing the right thing, do it yourself". I was also motivated by the decision from u/spez to let an unknown AI company use Reddit's imagery. If you know how to moderate well, please let me know. Also, feel free to discuss ways to attack AI development, and if you have evidence of AIBros being cruel and remorseless, make sure to save the evidence for people "on the fence". Remember, we don't know if AI is unstoppable. AI uses up loads of energy to be powered, and tons of circuitry. There may very well be an end to this cruelty, and it's up to us to begin that end.

I know of a lot of indie games that are actually really good, and I'm hoping to find some others. Here's my list:

  • BPM: Bullets Per Minute
  • Hedon
  • Ion Maiden
  • Prodeus
  • Project Warlock
  • Tower 57
  • Wrath: Aeon Of Ruin If this list is incomplete, help by expanding it :)
