Oh... Neil Gaiman... Their books conflict me, now. I used to love them.

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 28 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah I’m the same, this way he’s not getting the money? It’s all for charity. Donated books.

I figure, if it's used, get them. No point in letting a book go to waste. I saw American Gods, Good Omens, and Anansi Boys at the used bookstore recently and grabbed all of them.

edit: Wow, I also bought a couple by Isaac Asimov. We seem to be catching up on the same authors, lol.

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

My read Asimovs, not included stuff he’s been editor on like anthologies.

And up until today my too be read Asimovs, I am actually currently reading Nine Tomorrows, couple repeats unfortunately.

I enjoyed watching American Gods, the wife enjoyed Good Omens with me. So we will likely pirate the finale episode when it’s out.

Dang, that is a nice collection! I picked up Foundation's Edge and Asimov's Guide to Science (apparently, originally titled The Intelligent Man's Guide to Science). Those are the only two things of his that I have. I've been wanting to read I, Robot for years, though.

Foundations and his larger universe is fantastic. There’s a few issues as he didn’t decide to combine them until 20 years after starting, but it flows enough.

I'm looking forward to it -- I went back to the same bookstore yesterday and found a copy of The Foundation Trilogy.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

If you can find a used copy, the graphic novel version of Stardust by Charles Vess is GLORIOUS.

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

You can still enjoy the art, and not support the artist by buying it used (or pirating it).

An artist turning out to be an utter piece of shit is, in my opinion, one of the better reasons for piracy.

I feel like it's especially hard in this case though, like a lot of what his works are doing thematically and the topics they cover comes off as really dark and fucked up in light of what he did.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today -2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

enjoying the art is still support his image. same goes for people who still support HP despite what rowling as supported and is supporting currently. i watched yt video one time a guest said something about crosby, how supporting/watching his shows or content is still wrong and she went along the lines he mightve gotten his comedic inspiration from SA women. same goes with nutrek and paramount how does someone watch a "progressive show" and support someone like ellison through subscription.

[–] mongo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah real shame he turned out to be a total piece of shit, but can't touch his stuff now

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 3 weeks ago

his shows wouldve gotten better(as in better props and acting), if he had not done all those things.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I saw a really great quote recently by gianmarco soresi (I'm paraphrasing here): widespread cancel culture had led to people denying that their favorite authors could possibly have done horrible things.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

It also creates an environment where people reject nuance for simplistic black and white thinking.

A work can be a masterpiece and also have been created by a monster.

The author of Shakespeare's works almost certainly expressed viewpoints that would be unacceptable to us. This doesn't mean that Hamlet is suddenly not worth experiencing.

at least they are quarantined

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 13 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Neuromancer is one of my favorite books.

[–] Sunforged@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's been on my list for a bit, this was a good reminder I need to get my hands on it.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The whole trilogy and Burning Chrome is fantastic.

Gibson is really good at writing trilogies that finish strong. I can't wait for Jackpot.

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

It’s one of the ones the names popped out at me, few copies too.

Check also with your local public library — they sometimes sell books cheaply that have been donated or removed from their collection.

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Pretty sure those would go to other organizations in our city. But great info.

This is a donation book fair, all donated books, all proceeds to charity.

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 weeks ago

My library was selling a bag of books for a dollar. As in, you bring a bag, fill it with your choice of books, and pay a dollar. Not sure if they still do that, but they were getting overwhelmed with donations.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

I always go to the used book sale and get like 30 $1 paperbacks then donate them to my unit book cart (inpatient psych) when I'm done reading them (also a paperback and cup of tea pair nicely with a good night shift).

If any of you would like you do this just remember only paperbacks and while it's not a hard no it's best to avoid obviously hardcore / explicit violent or sexual content (nothing the other patients are going to comment on them reading in the dayroom). Also most of my coworkers who would object to adult content don't really actually... read. At least not enough to censor content deeper than the cover.

[–] lifeinlarkhall@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's a great idea, love that. Out of curiosity does your ward have a good selection then? I've been to the psych ward (patient) and there was a shelf with games/books, etc but maybe 20 books and eh 🤷‍♀️

I think it's a great idea for psych wards (and honestly other general wards too) to have a small, varied library and ideally, a quiet space to read.

You say cart - is yours a mobile library? That's a very cool idea too.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

It's just a cart that as you said has about 20 books and a few board games at any one time. My donation picks seem to go pretty quickly (but also I have very #booktok taste).

Unfortunately the must haves had been picked over already. Volounteers get an early day. No dinnamin, no wells, anything popular was gone basically.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 3 points 3 weeks ago

Funny story.

The movie 'Fantastic Voyage' was from an original screenplay written by Harry Kleiner, based on a story by Otto Klement and Jerome Bixby. Isaac Asimov has nothing to do with it until they decided to do a novelization.

But because Asimov was a big name everyone thought the movie was based on one of his stories.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

i read mtg books for a while, the ones with the lore behind the cards so to speak. better to read it in succession since the mtg books are continuation of the previous blocks/story arcs.

What a haul!

I’m just getting into the sun eater series but from a quick scan of book spines there if you haven’t I’d recommend wading in unless a space opera than casually mentions 52 planets in the introductory book and is an autobiographical spanning 1500 years of misadventure sounds overwhelming 😂

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I love space operas. The Expanse, Dune, and Foundations are awesome.

[–] Blurntout@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

The first book is a lot of main character development but the second jumps right into the plot!

[–] uhmbah@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Maybe the early arrivers got their pick, but a good haul none-the-less

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Oh definitely, helpers mentioned they did have some.

My buddy just texted me and his SO got the only Brandon Sanderson book.

[–] SirSamuel@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Oh man, those Lucky Starr titles bring back memories

+1 for Timothy Zahm btw. Nice haul
