A play called Souvenir, late last year, put on by a local theater company. (Incidentally, their theater is in the building that used to be the gym when I was in college. It looks really nice inside now, and you would never guess that it was the most divey, stanky gym you had ever seen for like 60 years beforehand. I loved that place.)

Anyway, the play was about a famously bad singer who gained fame for how off-pitch she was. It was funny, heartwarming, and very well done. I didn't know it while watching the play, but she was a real person, too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Foster_Jenkins

If you want something physical to read, Glenn Fleishman (@glennf@zeppelin.flights) wrote a book called How Comics Are Made. https://howcomicsaremade.com/

From the description:

This covers the whole ball of wax of how artists, knowing their newsprint medium, drew their comics and marked drawings up for color reproduction; how printers put that work through the most arcane and impossible-to-believe operations to get them onto paper...

I think it's mostly focused on comic strips in the newspaper, but I'm guessing the process is mostly the same for comic books.

Haha, yeah the title originally made me think that he was known for cheating, and then was being celebrated on a postage stamp anyway for some reason. But I'm guessing most people who follow the game competitively would know the name Faker.

Just saying "esports competitor" (and then "competitor" thereafter) always sounded like a completely reasonable description to me. Not calling them an athlete, while also not belittling their skill or accomplishments.

I'm always torn about what kinds of features should be put behind a paywall. Like, if it's just little customizations, that's much better than saying, "pay us a monthly fee to make more people see your posts." It seems silly to make UI customization a pro feature, but that also seems like a non-evil way of monetizing a social media app.

I noticed it when I was going into the bathroom that morning. There was no dirt, it was an indentation in the rug.

I did. I didn't notice anything out of place, the front door was locked, and I live on an upper floor, so getting in through a window is not possible.

Large footprint on the bathroom floor mat that didn't match any of my shoes. I live alone. Still can't explain it.

That does look like a Bugout, and maybe the mini, too. That looks really nice.

Looks amazing, well done. Did you make it? If so, what did you do for the potatoes? They look perfect.

Cool, that makes sense. Linux Mint has a reputation for user friendliness, it's got to have one. The author of this article must have missed it.

I had to install Steam through the command line [...] Steam is available in Linux Mint’s default repository, so I could get it with a quick “sudo apt-get install steam” in the terminal.

I've never used Mint before; does it not come with a graphical app store?

And man, I love how so many articles from major websites mentioning Windows 11 are actually about how to avoid it altogether. :D

Listening to Power Windows yesterday made me want to listen to Moving Pictures today. God this is such a good album. Everything about it is amazing. Even the album art is just perfect. :D

Rush - Power Windows (piefed-media.feddit.online)

I thought of this album after reading the article that @bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works shared earlier this week. (https://lemmy.world/post/44958191)

I've been collecting vinyl albums for ~two years now; I never had a turntable before, and really hadn't listened to physical media since I was a little kid. This was one of the first vinyl records that I bought, and therefore, one of the first full albums that I had listened to in a long time.

I discovered Rush by downloading mp3s from Limewire in high school, so I wasn't really familiar with any of their actual albums. I had always just been listening to a playlist of Limelight, Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, Test for Echo (the song), and a few others. This was my first time listening to one of their albums as a single work, and I immediately saw the value in doing so. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, even though none of my favorite Rush songs were on the album. That has always made this one special for me: it's the album that made me realize how great it is to listen to a full album.

Was having some chai tea and an orange just now, and it occurred to me that I should grate some of the orange zest and put it in the tea (in a tea egg). Then I added a couple dashes of Angostura bitters. I'm onto something here.

I have a pair of powered Klipsch bookshelf speakers, and while I don't have any complaints about them, I'm thinking about getting an amplifier and switching to passive speakers, just for a more "purely analog" setup. The speakers I have right now have modern features like a remote and bluetooth, and I don't think I'll miss the remote and I never use bluetooth.

What do you use? I'm not an audiophile by any means, so I'll probably see what affordable, used amp and speakers I can find at a record store or thrift shop, but I'd love to hear your recommendations, too.

#NowPlaying Santana - Amigos (specifically, the song Europa)

You take the blue pill, you wake up on your bed, and believe whatever you want to believe.

You take the red pill, you take a big step back, and literally FUCK YOUR OWN FACE.

What are you getting this week?

For me, Absolute Batman #18, and maybe X-Men United #1. Not sure, though, I've been losing interest in the X-Men line lately. Oh, and if they still have a copy of Poison Ivy #42 from last week, I'll pick that up. That looked interesting.

The GoCollect site hasn't had this list on their blog for a couple weeks now -- looks like Chuck's new releases list is now on its own separate site at comiclist.info. He also doesn't have them all on one page, so here are the links for each publisher:

What are you pulling this week?

For me this week, just Absolute Batman #17, and also seeing if they have Absolute Martian Manhunter Vol. 1 back in stock.
