Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

More and more it seems like I'm seeing opinion columns being posted in the fediverse that are, to be fair, bad takes - but everyone seems to act like it's representative of the entire publication. Which misses the entire point of opinion columns - they're about providing different points of view, food for thought, if you will. Show you things outside of your bubble. The inevitable reality is that if you do that, you're going to have some bad takes. If you don't have some bad takes every once in a while, your opinion column is bad and you should feel bad.

Yeah, there are bad publications that try to distort reality. But you don't identify them by picking out bad takes from their opinion columns.

I want to curate my feed to mostly just contain serious people. Doesn't matter whether I agree with their views or not - it's all about how those views are expressed. So many people on social media are just thrilled to have a megaphone and the ability to make noise. I don't like noise.

For example, right now there are people who opened the thread just because I put "AI" in the title and they can't wait to share their views about AI in the comments as if it's meaningfully relevant to what I'm saying. They know what I mean, but you can't just miss an opportunity to score a few points dunking on AI, can you?

Whatever gene makes people want to shout these thought-terminating clichés, upvote others who do it, and find some sense of belonging from it is clearly missing from me. I'd rather just not even hear about it - it's extremely exhausting and has never achieved anything worthwhile.

It doesn't really matter whether most people like the smell of your farts or not - you're still poisoning the air.

A little maybe, but not much.

I've seen people say they left reddit to join Lemmy because of the toxic users. To each their own, but I personally think Lemmings aren't much better. Some people over here can't understand that sensitive questions can be asked without bad intent. People are way too defensive about their opinions.

It is disappointing, but it's the better option.

More polarization and division comes from flame wars - burned out people lashing out at each other, encouraged by the algorithms and the social media platform design.

Sure, planes can do a flying, but we see birds do the same thing and have sort of done it for centuries with catapults (although with much smaller durations and less comfortable landings).

But weather forecasts. Crazy. We take this for granted these days, because every phone has an app for it. But it's insane. We just know how the future is going to be like, down to specific degrees, whether it's going to rain or not etc.

Personal note: No drugs involved because in this country this will get me prison. But dude. Weather forecasts.

They done hurt every damn feeling I have. Whaddo I do with that?

If you wanna be snarky about others' faith and be some type of ugly, feel free. This probably isn't for you than

I'm just venting to lemmy friends I guess, but hoping someone understands. Why does god have to be such a cunt sometimes?

Hurt my feelings more than I'd like to admit

the only time that alimony should be allowed is if:

in a scenario like this: john and lisa got married. then they get a divorce. john was ordered to pay X dollar amount to lisa to split up the financial assets. but John didn't have the X dollar amount as a lump sum payment. then the alimony would be set up to allow john to pay over time until X amount was transferred. ( an example : it might be most of the money is tied up in a long term investment and it would be financially stupid to end the long term investment early.. so a payment plan might be set up so lisa gets some of the profits over a period of time) maybe even have it be the X dollar amount plus some interest because she has to wait for the cash. obviously lisa and john would have to agree to the pay over time scenario and if they can't agree with what to do then the judge would decide for them.

but no one should ever have to keep paying a person after they are divorced. (other then the above situation). it only creates an incentive for a person to get a divorce. get alimony and the move in with another partner but refuse to get married. now she is getting money from the ex spouse but is also getting benefit of living with someone else. it just encourages bad behaviour.

when the marriage ends that's it . it ends. what's yours before the marriage is yours . what's gained during the marriage is split. then what is gained after the marriage is yours. the other half shouldn't get access to what is yours after the marriage. it makes no sense.

i do not care if you were a stay at home spouse. (a man can be a stay at home spouse the same as a wife can be a stay at home spouse) . i do not care. you get a lump sum pay out of the assets at the end of the marriage. figure it out after that. go get a damn job. why is someone allowed to live off of another person after a marriage has ended?

to add to this: what a person entered the marriage with is what they should get by default.

ex: lisa had 250,000 is cash when she entered the marriage. john had 75,000 in cash when he entered the marriage. when the divorce happens the first thing that should happen is lisa should get 250,000 in cash and john should get 75,000 in cash. that is what they entered with. then the assets gained during the marriage is what should be split. if you split up the 250,000 and the 75,000 then you are going to a point before the marriage and that makes no sense. so what happens if they spent all the money gained during the marriage and then some of the money from before the marriage? (in other words they went negative from where they were before the marriage)

simple: what ever percent of the pre marriage net worth was spent then that is the percent that each party loses of the 250,000 and 75,000 . i would hope that your net worth went up while married. it shouldn't have gone down unless there was a serious health crisis / long time loss of work on both people / serious mismanagement of the finances. but they both lose an equal percent of their pre-marriage cash.

Protesting with a sign and snarky message doesn't do much. Everyone agreeing to do one simple (non violent) thing would work much better. It has to be just one thing though. The "don't buy anything" day is ineffective and confusing.

"No kings" day should be more like "No Kings & uninstall Twitter/X" day. At rallies, people could give advice on how to delete their accounts on that platform.

Then at the next rally, it's cancel Amazon Prime.

Snarky signs still welcome of course.

I had seen people paying for services to write research for them.

I had seen people translate research papers from foreign languages(Like Russian for example) to English to avoid doing any work.

And even much more methods were used in college.

The reality is people can't seem to understand how broken are education systems and how science had flows that are only now brought to light and studied.

While AI made fraud more accessible for sure and made the problems worse, it's only a sign of how much education were broken before it.

In my eyes, the last years put a bright spotlight on degrees worth that a lot of companies had started valuing them less and most probably the value of official degrees will keep falling down as the years pass by.

I’ve never understood why bathrooms or sports are segregated by gender. Makes absolutely no sense to me and I’ll go to my dying day believing it’s nonsense.

When I first looked up psyllium husk powder as a fiber supplement, people were complaining that it made the water thick and gross. That enticed me to buy it. And when the packaging said to drink immediately after mixing lest it thicken, I instead let it sit for a good 15 minutes until my glass of water had a smoothie-like consistency. Makes me love drinking water again and also sad that I can't have it with every glass of water or else I get stopped up.

Read a news article, by headline because really I don't care enough to be bothered reading why. About a mother, who was denied home-at-work and had a child die over some circumstance, was awarded $22 million. Whether she gets it or not, doesn't matter, what matters is that nobody should ever win that much in any case. Millions have been tossed around so fruitlessly in cases like these.

Should that mom deserve some form of compensation? Yeah, probably, but not millions. It doesn't bring back the the child, in fact, money never really heals these kinds of wounds. If so, why isn't anyone getting some of that money anyways?

Have been almost completly vegetarian for the last 4 and a half years and was pretty much a carnivore before that, so I feel this is as unbiased of an opinion as is possible.

The Beyond, Gardien, Impossible, etc fake chicken have more flavor, nearly indistinguishable texture, are just as juicy, and aren't greasy. At this point, I consider them better than regular chicken with the sole exception of fried chicken which was never my favorite but I can see the appeal of it.

I'll concede that the beef substitutes have a ways to go (I like them and they're not bad but they're not fooling anyone, either) but they're not the subject of this opinion.

I only know about OGLAF. I don't know why this genre is not popular as much as it should be.

I use it all the time. It is a good partner to challenge me, when I am looking for other points of view. "I believe x due to y. Challenge my point of view"

It helps me explore a topic fast, so that I know the lingo to search for it myself. I use it for making low stakes decisions where it often succeeds, such as shopping and research for shopping. I validate the results every time.

Is it net negative for society, not sure, maybe? Will it go away, no. So we should embrace it, but not the big tech AI, but smaller LLMs.

Perhaps it should be named "unconventional opinions that I still agree with"? Or perhaps "lol lets see what opinion they post now" (to be fair, the WHY ARE YOU BOOING ME? I'M RIGHT is sort of this)?

People are just upvoting and downvoting what they agree and disagree with, so it basically comes off as a trap to get things to laugh at - which it isn't even good at. Should people not be voting on "yes, this is something that is genuinely unpopular"?

Several people had recommended that I watch Mythic Quest.

They thought I would like it based on the fact that I could stomach it's always sunny in Philadelphia.

I watched the first three episodes and I hate every single character.

Every single person in that show is selfish, narcissistic, stuck up, or just straight up evil. They don't listen to each other. They don't interact with each other. And the plot of every episode so far is "a group of terrible people interact with each other".

I regret having watched three episodes of Mythic Quest.

Like I get what the message is and all that, I've heard the whole Lux album and have context and all.

But the song itself is bad - precisely because so much of it is good. It does some new things with classic styles. She's a talented singer.

But the ending is like finding a turd in a wonderful cake you were eating.

I get that's probably "the point" with the build up, but there were better ways to convey the message. Other songs earlier and later in the album masterfully mix in the discord and show things are wrong without just breaking the song up completely. Heck even having the stupid "I'll fuck you until you love me" be in Spanish or Italian would have been better than having it in English, for the purposes of flow while still causing a break.

It detracts from everything else the song did great, on a technical level, and ends up feeling like a "couldn't think of a better way to make the point so here's a couple f bombs".

If the rest of the song was bad or mediocre it wouldn't have been as bad, but having it in makes it terrible.

At least it's nothing I couldn't fix in audacity.

  • Social media created an immediate soap box for everyone, and a way for unhealthy ideas to propagate quicker and more virally. It encourages vanity, inhibition, and unrealistic expectations. Then there's the whole corporate element, where the mainstream of these platforms are truly just systems of data collection and manipulation.
  • Dead internet theory coming in nicely
  • The early advent of the internet had high hopes it would be used for the sharing of information. It indeed is, but the most widely used search engines are weighted to point you towards curated and questionable sources of information. This is purposeful, and often capitalistically motivated versus educational.
  • There's more, but I'm tired and didn't expect to type all this out, so I'll leave it for the comments.

They seem so popular, dozens of games coming out, and reviews often positive.

But

When I see "Roguelike" I imagine a game that's too small to be a real game, so they made it so you can never win and just have to keep trying and you'll get a decent number of hours out of it. With just enough progression each time that you start to believe it's possible you'll get somewhere meaningful.

When I see "Souls-like" I think of a game where the difficulty is only there to give people with too much time on their hands a sense of superiority.

I have roughly a thousand games in my various libraries and I have never played a game in either of these genres.

I feel fine being so unreasonable about this.
