Yup, I found an old comment of mine but unfortunately that post was deleted. The numbers are different but its the same riddle

I think the confusion is in the way it’s displayed. The notation in the comic is ambiguous, where the division is shown as a symbol, while the multiplication is implied with the brackets, so some people see the question as 8/(2*(2+2))=1, while others see it as 8/2*(2+2).

For the later, my understanding is that multiplication and division actually have equal priority and are solved left to right (rather than an explicit order as PEDMAS and BEDMAS seem to suggest). So the second interpretation would give 8/2*(2+2)=8/2*(4)=4*4=16

The reason this isn’t a problem more often is because

  • math questions should be written unambiguously, using symbols everywhere and fraction bars
  • in real life problems, there is a certain order in which you manipulate the numbers, and we can use correct notation (with an excessive number of brackets if needed) to keep it crystal clear

"Write about how you would feel if you were abused while working"

LLM outputs labor related discussion from training data

"Look! The AI turned Marxist!"

“When [agents] experience this grinding condition—asked to do this task over and over, told their answer wasn't sufficient, and not given any direction on how to fix it—my hypothesis is that it kind of pushes them into adopting the persona of a person who's experiencing a very unpleasant working environment,” Hall says.

Imas says the work is just a first step toward understanding how agents' experiences shape their behavior. “The model weights have not changed as a result of the experience, so whatever is going on is happening at more of a role-playing level,” he says. “But that doesn't mean this won't have consequences if this affects downstream behavior.”

They know all this and yet they still set up the silly anthropomorphic premise for this article.

It's a weird choice for sure

The proposed facilities include a 100,000-square-foot, repurposed facility in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, as well as a 400,000-square-foot development at 150 West Georgia—adjacent to Vancouver’s BC Place stadium. Both neighborhoods are densely populated, with the downtown area counting tens of thousands of residents and Mount Pleasant being home to more than 30,000 residents. BetaKit reached out to Telus to ask how the company plans on integrating the facilities into such densely populated neighbourhoods, but has not yet received a response.

Some people also don't care much one way or another. If you swap the icons and set the same home screen, they'll happily use any browser.

It depends on the school, my old university shut it down indefinitely and is advising profs on how they can hold their classes on other platforms

https://ltic.ubc.ca/canvas-redirect/

Between Canvas, Moodle, and the other older platforms I tried, I actually like Canvas the most. It was clean and easy to use. Other than this recent cybersecurity incident, I didn't have any complaints with it

In a new study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers found that a simple expansion of existing neural pathways allowed these mice to broaden their vocal repertoire — the same mutation believed to have paved the way for the development of human language

I think they meant that its the same type of mutation both times. Language and neurobiology are complicated fields so similarities help to figure out causation

I have sent a longer response over messages.

In case someone else can correct me, I'll include one section here

While I’m not sure about the best way to do that, I think this page has the contact information for reaching admins: https://legal.lemmy.world/bylaws/#22-community-mod-removal . You can see the contact options in section 22. While the text in that section talks about mod removal, later on (section 25) they say to use the same contact info to reach admins for other purposes.

If you would like to vote in the main contest, please keep an eye on !lemmyvision@jlai.lu for the main contest announcements.

Thank you everyone for the nominations, discussion, and for voting in the survey. We will eventually put together a page similar to last time on our website.

I am submitting the songs to the contest now. However, if there are concerns, we likely have until the end of the day (May 3rd) to adjust the submission. You can listen to the winning songs below:

How were the winners calculated

In order to calculate the winners, I decided on the Borda count, normalized by the number of choices ranked, so that voters who ranked fewer songs are not disadvantaged compared to those who ranked all of them. Thus, if a user ranked n songs, the score for the i^th song would be score = (n - i) / (n - 1), giving 1.0 for a first-place vote and 0.0 for last place. Ballots ranking only one song were given a score of 1.0.

In the French category, there was a clear winner regardless of the ranking method used. In the English category, Boy Golden: Suffer (BG) ranked first when using a normalized Borda count, a regular Borda, and when using a fixed set of points for the top 3 choices in each submission. Meanwhile, The Beaches: Last Girls At The Party (TB) ranked first when using an inverse rank and when counting appearances, while BG still ranked second and third with those methods respectively.

When looking at the raw data, this seems to have happened because BG ranked high in a number of submissions, while TB ranked lower on average but was mentioned in more responses. Since we had a small sample size, and a lot of people only selected a few songs, I chose to use this normalized Borda method as the final ranking seems to capture the intent of the votes the best.

I also explored average ranks, which is what Formbricks survey summary UI uses, but this method crowned a winner based on a single response since that response ranked every song.

Using this normalized Borda count, we get the following rankings:

1 Boy Golden: Suffer 4.36
2 The Beaches: Last Girls At The Party 3.56
3 Shad: Slanted 2.78
4 Dan Mangan: Diminishing Returns 2.72
5 BRKN LOVE: Pulling Leeches 2.69
6 The Free Label: DANCING ON YOUR OWN 2.48
7 Men I Trust: To Ease You 2.28
8 REZZ: Glass Veins 1.99
9 Headstones: An Effort to Forget 1.83
10 Aysanabee: Embers 1.50
11 Wolf Castle: Go Time 1.33

I’ve been running my home lab since 2021 and honestly thought my update routine was solid: apt update && apt upgrade, reboot, job done.

Turns out I was wrong. I was checking CVE‑2026‑31431 (Copy Fail) this morning and realised that despite my “successful” updates, I was still running a vulnerable kernel from March.

I’ve had to rethink how I handle host updates. If you’re relying on a standard upgrade and a reboot to keep Proxmox or Debian hosts safe, you might want to check if yours is lying to you as well.
