That is what he meant when he said he envisions a future in which big tech is the owner of a tap that distributes skill and information to the rest of the world. This man is a walking crime against humanity.

Fuck Sam Altman

[–] baltakatei@sopuli.xyz 16 points 2 days ago

He'd probably call people having money in their savings account wasteful since it isn't in his account.

[–] Floon@lemmy.ml 33 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They're going to try to make non-cloud computers illegal in the next decade. Count on it.

[–] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago

They will say that it's to protect the children.

I agree. I have more to say, but not right now.

My home ram is idle a lot, it’s true. But AI datacenter ram is being wasted 100% of the time.

[–] slingstone@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

This reminds me of a section from a favorite book of mine:

The Encyclopedia Galactica defines a robot as a mechanical apparatus designed to do the work of a man. The marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation defines a robot as “Your Plastic Pal Who’s Fun to Be With.” The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy defines the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as “a bunch of mindless jerks who’ll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes,” with a footnote to the effect that the editors would welcome applications from anyone interested in taking over the post of robotics correspondent. Curiously enough, an edition of the Encyclopedia Galactica that had the good fortune to fall through a time warp from a thousand years in the future defined the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as “a bunch of mindless jerks who were the first against the wall when the revolution came.

Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide, #1)

Sam Altman is a mindless jerk who will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes. He'll be right after Elon.

Keeping Sam Altman alive is wasteful.

Ya know its funny several people basically made his argument to me here on lemmy when I asked folks about self hosting their own LLMs

[–] sammyb@lemmy.ca 187 points 3 days ago (7 children)

I get his argument logically, but I wonder how many vacant bedrooms he owns. He should give them to my housing collective so they aren't sitting idle all the time.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 88 points 3 days ago (3 children)

It's a good argument if it was made in good faith.

But he's evil, so it's not in good faith

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 58 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It is a stupid argument even if made in good faith.

[–] Naich@piefed.world 42 points 3 days ago (7 children)

It's sound reasoning up to a point. It would be far more efficient if everyone gave their RAM to a central collective and used it online. That way the RAM would be in use even when you aren't using it personally. Everyone would have an effectively infinite amount and it would be cheaper because you only pay for the time that you are using it.

I'm reality, of course, Sam would be in charge of all the RAM and would keep screwing us harder and harder until we started squeaking like a rat in an undersized corset. That's what separates the theory from reality.

[–] HetareKing@piefed.social 31 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think it might not be. Of course, what Sam means is "let us have all the RAM so you can run a ChatGPT client on your Commodore 64", and if that were the only thing RAM was used for, that would be more efficient. But it's not and it would be undesirable for things to become like that.

So let's imagine a general purpose RAM collective. I think for that to be workable at all, it would require a major upgrade to internet infrastructure to make it sufficiently high-throughput and low-latency, which would be very costly and also require a lot of RAM. The cost of all that would probably dwarf the inefficiencies of individually owned RAM not being used maximally.

Additionally, to get the latency low enough, the data centers would have to be pretty physically close to the people using them. But people who live near each other also tend to sleep, work and play at similar times, so the gained efficiency wouldn't be nearly as high as it could be. And on top of all that, even the lowest achievable latency would still be very slow by RAM standards, so at that point you might as well be using a hard drive as working memory.

ISP has an outage = you're cut off from everything, can't even play offline games.

Data center has an outage = same thing

Once they start paying for enterprise level redundancy for all parts of the system (multiple lines for all homes from isp, your data replicated across DCs, all within reasonable distance to you to retain latency), we get to a point where it's just a worse experience for probably more money, and a constant dependence on a vendor rather than a 1 time dependence. They have tried to make this work many times with the cloud gaming shit, and it failed every time.

IMO, even ignoring the evil part it is a step down from what we currently have (or rather, had before the asshole crew started buying everything so they rot in storage, driving prices to the moon).

I can think of something that’s an absolute waste of computing resources: AI bullshit. Nobody really needs to expend computing resources, electricity, and water to have ChatGPT tell them that they asked the best question ever because they’re so insightful.

[–] digdig@piefed.social 42 points 3 days ago

He's promoting his own business by ruining others.

The man is a shill of the highest order.

When the music stops, the bubble will burst.

He just wants to be the last one on the dance floor.

It's Rhetoric of the highest order.

[–] 1995ToyotaCorolla@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago

For a long time now, silicon Valley has wanted people to only have thin clients just powerful enough to access their cloud services. AI and datacenter build out is the closest they've been to realizing this dream, so of course Altman is going to have this view.

And to that I say go to hell

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 31 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Who's driving Altman's car and sleeping in Altman's bed when he's at a meeting? Maybe solve the parked-car and empty-building problems first.

[–] Kenny4tunes@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Like it or not, I perceive this to be the future; shitty/scary times ahead for us all in these new hardware-scarcity times.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Or we all get a bunch of discounts when they have production infrastructure for a bunch of data center AI horseshit nobody wants any longer, driving up the supply of desktop/laptop RAM chips.

Doesn't hurt to dream and hope a little during these dark times.

They will burn it all down and destroy countless bits of precious metal and other expensive material at a high cost before they sell them to us.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 13 points 2 days ago

And should be denied it because of his credit history.

That begs the question: what tool did dear Sam use to acquire his skills in the first place? Since at least one of his own computers certainly played a role in his career (and he couldn’t possibly have used it to its full capacity for decades) this attitude speaks volumes. Even though his own personal computing power helped him get to where he is now, he denies that same opportunity to everyone else. Fuck you, Sam.

[–] Jiral@lemmy.world 41 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Sam's primary skill is grifting, you don't need a PC to develop that skill.

According to rumours he barely knows how to code and he is said to misunderstand basic machine learning concepts. It is however true that he might have needed a PC at some point in his 2 years of studying computer science before dropping out. Even though I remember that at my local university people weren't even touching a PC in the first year and were being tortured by theory and math by hand instead, to understand the foundation before going anywhere fancy. Maybe that has changed in the meanwhile.

If he wants my graphics card so bad, I'd be more than happy to give my 7900xtx to him via the rectal route, unlubed. I'd hate to give it up but I understand it's for a good cause. He can have the motherboard too, same way.

Counterpoint: Amazon is buying billions in Nvidia AI systems it can't yet turn on

https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-nvidia-ai-gpu-data-centers-power-shortages-2026-10?op=1

Before turning to slower RAM, they collectively made VRAM&GPU a luxury by intentionally exhausting supply to everyone else, and leftover components they can't (or haven't even planned) to power on collects dust.

There are like tens of ways to ridicule his argument, but I find this one more direct.

He's right about this being inefficient but the reason we can't have nice things here is that he is the most condensed essence of shit and we can't trust him or any of his billionaire shitcock friends.

Is this finally the manifestation of "you'll own nothing and love it" or whatever it was?

Someone did the same math as SETI in 1999, when they asked people to take idle compute to grind data. At what point does the free tier of ChatGPT grind data on your machine like some sort of bitcoin mining malware?

Let's extrapolate: Humans are 70% water - Buddy, at what point do to you start trying to dehydrate orphans to cool all the ram you want to harvest from average people?
