Oh, so I should be anxious about responding too soon or too late.

Cool, cool cool cool. Great, thank you

[–] TeddE@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Or posting on-time, yet being too short, or too detailed; Play it cool, but speak fire… keep it light, yet deep.

[–] whereitsat@lemmy.zip 4 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

i feel like a lot of culture nowadays is questionable. a person with the fullest social calendar will still feel special if someone texts them the next day. 'i'm loved and wanted,' they'll think, even if they're annoyed and not interested in the person.

so, where is this energy coming from?

I either respond within 3s, or two days later. There is no in between.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 47 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Imagine caring if someone texts you back immediately. Real maturity is recognizing that most adults have other things going on and can't/won't be glued to their phone all day long.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 47 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I read the meaning as someone thinking it weird to text back immediately. That was the offense. As if you should play it cool and wait to respond.

I personally respond quickly if I'm holding my phone and the message comes in, usually.

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I make sure to age my replies. If someone's not dying, give that shit a full 24 hours.

Them, 13 Aug: Morning!

You, 14 Aug: Morning! How are you?
Them, 14 Aug: great since I get to talk to you 🙂. How are you?

You, 15 Aug: Great for the same reason 🙂. Want to have dinner?
Them, 15 Aug: love to, where and when?
Them, 15 Aug: Where are we having dinner?
Them, 15 Aug: missed 7 calls from Them.
Them 15 Aug: I'm hungry, are you ok?
Them, 15 Aug: I hope you're ok, call me when you see this, no matter the time, I just need to know you're ok

You, 16 Aug: Morning, sorry, 24 hour rule. Dinner tonight?

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Just enough time to sous vide the roast

[–] X@piefed.world 4 points 1 day ago

Some days they get multiple replies, as a treat!

[–] Alenalda@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's dexter so it reads to me like anyone responding instantly is a serial killer.

[–] protist@retrofed.com 1 points 1 day ago

I thought that was David Fisher

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Also, I'm happy to text asap if we're planning something. If you're shooting me texts to small talk, I'm happy to chat, but you have to understand that I'll probably only start chatting when I'm really free if it's not important.

[–] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You’ve got it backwards. Read the post again.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

My comment mostly has to do with the 'mature' part, implying that the mature thing to do is to text someone back immediately. And conversely, not texting back immediately is immature.

That said, reading comprehension is not always my strong suit, so fair play. Me brain no work so good.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah but like instantly instantly is weird. You kind of expect there to be a period where they free their hands, then check the message, then weigh up whether it warrants a conversation right now, then think what to say, then type it. Could take 30 seconds, could take 3 hours if they're fully busy and you get sidelined.

A reaponse in 2 seconds from cold open always sets me off balance.

[–] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

You're thinking too much. Instant responses are not weird. Am I supposed to just wait for a bit so that youre wheels don't start turning in the most un charitable direction.

[–] revelrous@sopuli.xyz 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

There's a weird sort of etiquette with introverts. With some people I am replying instantly, but scheduling the send on a bit of delay so they don't feel pressured to essentially start a real time chat. Is everyone too in their head in this exchange? Probably. Still think it works best for some.

[–] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 19 hours ago

Hey if thats something you all came up with thats just being courteous / conscientious of your friends needs / preferences.

I mean, personally it's because I don't get a lot of messages in the first place, and most of the time I'm just lost in my thoughts and not actively busy so it's a nice change of pace. Now, even I'll admit 2 seconds is a little short, but I'm often ready with a response within 10

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 43 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Strange photo to use for this post

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

I'd have used cookie monster.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

As someone who often comes on too strong in the whole friendship thing I recently met someone who is that x10 and I understand how jarring it can be to have a friend who is rather extra.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 10 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Educate me please, is this a real thing? Do people delay responses to act cool? In my day, extended chat conversations were a thing and kinda required immediate responses. Does nobody do that anymore?

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

People actually use that "…" typing thing? Way too stressful.

[–] awfulawful@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 19 hours ago

It's just the current iteration of phone callback culture from the landline era. People had strong opinions about if you should call back dates or friends immediately or wait until the next day. The expectation of immediate response is a newer phenomenon.

[–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Probably as long as Snapchat has existed. Especially since they were the first to show your little avatar peaking over the keyboard if you were in the chat at the same time.

[–] restingOface@quokk.au 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Especially since they were the first to show your little avatar peaking over the keyboard if you were in the chat at the same time.

Snapchat was absolutely not the first to add a "typing now" indicator

[–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

No no no. The first to add the avatar that makes you look like a weirdo for just being in the same chat but not saying anything.

[–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Youre old enough that chats didnt have a history, and if they waited long enough, you had to open a different message entirely to remember what you sent them!

Ah the times

[–] anugeshtu@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Exactly what I was thinking. It's not that you don't get "immediate" feedback when somebody texts you... either by a sound or otherwise. Why wouldn't you respond to that if you have the time? Although I get it when somebody sends you a thousand messages (or voice ones) in a row. Then I also need a time out.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I delay texts both reading and responding to not be a slave to my phone or to your whims. I don't owe you immediate gratification. Texts are really disruptive. About 40% of the time that thing you asked me that I didn't respond to you about took care of itself or you figured it out yourself and are maybe better for it.

[–] end_stage_ligma@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If texts are disruptive then an unsolicited phone call is an affront to all creation

Sure. Treat them the same way. If you don't VM it's probably not important enough for me to call back. I'll Call you back when I'm driving, its a great time to talk. Also, you're not going to call me about as dumb as a thing as you are going to txt me. The threshold to interact this way is much higher, it's a natural BS screen.

[–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 day ago

OK, but don't let it happen again

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I didn't mean to be a good friend.

[–] Pudutr0n@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

apology not accepted. weirdo

What kind of game is this?

[–] helpImTrappedOnline@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

One you can't win.

You loose if you text back immediately, and you loose if you don't.

It's Will Forte in the role of Phil Tandy Miller in the tv-series The Last Man on Earth, in which he uses the "I hardly knew her" joke intensively throughout the series.

At first it's corny because it's a poor joke, but then he keeps doing it, so it becomes annoying, but then he keeps doing it, so it becomes funny, but then he keeps doing it, so it becomes annoying again.
