"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

The political right hates AI a little less than the left, but not by super much, and some forces from the emerging America First movement are getting ready to protest AI's invasiveness and capacity for manipulation. The org is called Humans First, and they're trying to have a 50501-style nationwide protest about it on July 18th. If both sides cooperate on this one, good things can actually happen, so this should get talked about. A lot. https://www.humansfirst.com/

Occupy Wall Street taught us one thing; trying to cooperate with conservatives is like trying to fuck a cactus. In theory, it could fit in that hole. In practice, it'll do more damage than anything else.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 6 days ago

Tbf, the "damage" is state employed agitators showing up to sow demographical division because coming together against the 1% is too close to actually doing something and we need to be distracted lest something start to actually change, and the fallout from that.

But yeah, fair.

[–] lyrial@anarchist.nexus 5 points 6 days ago

Holy shit that site is cancer, both visually and politically. I would love to be involved in a mass protest against AI, but I'd rather not feel obligated to punch a Nazi in the process.

[–] AeonFelis@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

The whole thing kind of reads like a Progressive[^1] attempt to dress progressive ideas[^2] in traditionalist aesthetics in order to appeal to Conservatives.

[^1]: More like Gray Tribe, actually [^2]: Kind of weird that the current frontier of technology is considered conservative and opposing it is considered progressive - but here we are.

[–] mynameisbob@lemmy.ml 0 points 4 days ago

Protest are for goverments that listen. These chuds chase cars.

Too many gray areas (bodies of water) on that map with no red anywhere near them. The people there are going to be really surprised to learn that they've been living on some tech company's water all their lives, and that their local water board all retired and left the state at the same time.

Man, even when they're doing something good, they still have to frame it as "I come first!"

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 75 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Conservatives categorically lack the brain capacity to consider others, never mind put them first.

[–] HailSeitan@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Seems more like a lack of empathy than brain capacity. Moral and intellectual defects are not the same.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Actually there's a fair amount of emerging neuroscience that shows that the brains of people with conservatives worldviews have lowered activity in the regions that process empathy, lowered activity in the regions that engage and resolve conflicts , and biased towards feeling threatened in a safe situation.

How amazing would it be if our hatred for AI slop is what finally unites the working class against the billionaires?

[–] terranoid@lemmy.cafe 35 points 1 week ago

In a sense, it will

There was a guy who started talking about how they used AI in their ads and noticed way less conversion rate. They decided, fuck it, like write on cardboard and do something real and human. Waaaay better results.

I think the big wigs are going to realize they're getting ripped off by AI, told it's the future and that they need to invest and adopt before anyone else, and they're now realizing they're spending millions to save thousands.

This is what always gets me.

US dems will throw their leaders under the bus in a split second, or fry them over the slightest past scandal.

Even those that won't will criticize them over specific issues.

Most Republicans, no matter what, cannot blame Trump.

He is objectively, full-throated pro Big Tech; he invited them all to Washington. He is talking about a national OpenAI stake, he is talking up data centres, he literally brought Elon Musk into his cabinet. He's publicly received hundreds in millions of dollars in donations from Tech CEOs! Repeatedly.

Yet even this movement simply cannot bring themselves to say "maybe he's wrong on this one?"

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 33 points 1 week ago (1 children)

One of the big common themes of conservatism is following the leader. They all want to bend the knee. They love hierarchy.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Well, the flip-side is there doesn't seem to be nuance or waffling, either.

To Republicans, he's either with them, or not; regular folks who break with Trump over an issue seem to renounce him entirely, from what I've seen.

...Hence I'm positing this could be a breaking point.

I think some Trump supports who join this movement, and start watching his actions closely, are going to hit it. Some already did over Epstein, but this is an issue with broader direct impact in peoples' lives.

"The conservative movement has been transformed by President Trump into a movement that puts the interests of everyday Americans first. Now, Big AI globalists seek to hijack our movement to get Washington, D.C. to put Big AI before the American people."

First of all, LOL

Secondly, the calls are coming from inside the party, dipshits.

Humans First is a conservative social movement that is dedicated to ensuring that the future of AI is in the hands of everyday people.

That doesn't sound anti-AI to me.

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The cool new shill tactic is to pretend to be anti-AI or "concerned about AI" so they can hijack the conversation and re-direct people's focus away from actual change and regulation. They bring up do-nothing solutions like "Local LLMs" or a there being a "public stake" in the industry.

Lemmy is absolutely thick with these cockroaches.

"IT'S AFFECTING ME NOW!!!!"

Think they'll beat the living fuck out of some cops and attempt to murder some politicians? Seems to be the standard for their "protests".

[–] Signtist@bookwyr.me 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Anti AI, anti cops, and anti politicians is a threefer.

Fake ass protest. Conservatives love AI.

Yeah they are called liberal zionist

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 15 points 1 week ago

It's fake concern all right. In Florida, DeSantis is term-limited out after this next election (YAY!), and Trump's hand picked candidate is Byron Donaldson.

This week he started running anl campaign ad in which he shows concern for data centers, and has some utility rate protection he's pushing. It makes him sound a bit anti-data center, so I looked it up.

Turns out he LOVES data centers, he's just doing this one little thing so he can sound like he's pushing back against them, and ease the biggest worry of MAGAs - higher utility bills. They don't care if it destroys the environment, they just don't want to pay more for it.

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago

I think Conservative$ love it. But the "conservative base" doesn't.

what? it’s coming from your own people

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

yeah the GOP will produce an edict about how AI is good and they'll probably fall in line.

Well, except the ones paying more for everything - hey wait a minute, that's what we get with everything GOP what the fuck

[–] teft@piefed.social 19 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Makes sense. Both the Harkonnens and the Atreides were anti ai.

Like other commenters are saying: it’ll be sweet if anti ai sentiment unites people but the entirety of human history suggests people will cooperate until the threat is over and then they’ll break upon lines of who wipes standing or sitting or some other dumb shit.

It's funny to me when their supreme leader keeps using ai generated videos to "own" his enemies. Did you all see the one of him as a doctor diagnosing TDS?

No. Co-opting shit is one of the worst tendencies that comes out of the left

But they could go and support it. Imagine organising a conservative anti-ai rally and getting met not with a counter protest, but with a horde of left/progressive people supporting your core message. It would be a head fuck and maybe enough to make you start questioning your reality and allegiances.

I wonder how many years until they find out what their legislators have been doing to promote AI?

A lot of them only recently found out that Bush admin gave Epstein a plea deal and that Reagan is largely responsible for the IRGC being sponsored by and alligned with China.
