We get to show off our FREEDOM. Once those Eurosocialists get a taste of two hours in traffic, they'll never go back to their nanny state Marxism.

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social 73 points 2 days ago (4 children)

No, they won't. Because they are not going there.

[–] herrvogel@lemmy.world 56 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Qatar 2022 should be proof enough that they probably will, and in huge numbers. Football fans don't care. You could host the world cup in literal hell and the tickets would still sell out.

[–] someguy7734206@sh.itjust.works 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Isn't FIFA panicking right now because of greatly decreased hotel bookings?

fifa doesnt care, the tickets are being bought up by scalpers. the hospitality industry, otoh...

Although Qatar is also a shithole, they were smart enough to not scare the visitors. Magastan is actively telling the world that the maga gestapo will deport any "alien" to fuck knows where.

Going to magastan right now means you are just one angry gravy seal away from ending deported in a country you don't even know.

[–] Skunk@jlai.lu 43 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

This.

Plus the crazy magastan prices for everything, and plenty of hotels and tourism industries in the host cities are crying that reservations are low, that World Cup is a "non event" for them when we are just weeks away of the event.

I believe we will see rather empty stadium with zero ambiance and most spectators will probably be locals that call football soccer.

Then ICE will molest a Euro football star because he’s black so teams will boycott the US and only play in Mexico and Canada.

This is going to be the greatest fuckup of history, nobody is fucking shit up like that. I can’t wait.

[–] Apollo98@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

As funny as that would be I bet that this event goes off without a hitch. Like ⅔ of the planned transit projects are already delayed, though.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Qatar used slave labor to build their stadiums. Football fans looked the other way. They will also ignore the gestapo and the wars US started. My bet is also on full stadiums.

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago

The slaves didn't really affect them directly though. They were all sent back to the camps by the time the event started.

Getting stopped at the border and having some jackboots rifle through your phone and social media is a little more in your face.

I don't think for a minute though that those stadiums won't be filled. There are more than enough people world wide to fill events like this with out issue.

[–] Zizzy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The difference is one potentially directly affects them and one doesn't. You cant just look away if youre being hauled off somewhere. However, I still think the stadium will be full

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 4 points 2 days ago

I agree there's a difference but it's not going to stop Football brained fans from going. If they were thinking rationally they would boycott this disgusting spectacle of corruption decades ago.

[–] FarceOfWill@infosec.pub 7 points 2 days ago

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 0 points 1 day ago

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

You don't want to miss the chance to see FIFA's home field!

[–] Deme@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

What I cannot understand is how so many of my fellow Americans actually like it this way. And I get that a lot of it is ignorance and status quo bias, but you don't have to visit, or even know about, the places with great transportation infrastructure to know that ours sucks.

You're only options to get anywhere are drive or fly and both suck and are expensive, uncomfortable and inconvenient. I mean, I've never visited any of the world's great transportation areas. I've never experienced that first hand, but I've sure as hell driven around the US and I absolutely fucking hate it. Traffic, asshole drivers, crumbling infrastructure yet somehow also constant road construction, getting anywhere in this country is a pain in the ass.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 7 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Racism.

Many Americans would rather die than have black people have nice things. If you build a good bus system, black people will use it. They won't suffer for being "lesser" like they "deserve".

That's it. Conservatism demands out groups to punch down at.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 4 points 12 hours ago

Even the ones that aren’t specifically opposed to black people in their neighborhood, few and far between amongst that subset, would be against some other non WASP demographic even if it’s just the poor and unhoused

[–] nucleative@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Traveled around the world a lot.. The US isn't anywhere near the best as you say. It's also not the worst. It's just heavily car oriented and fuck-everything-else oriented (except maybe air travel but... TSA).

I can say that living in a big city with mobile phone payments on every form of public transport, and a highly reliable on-time system that's always clean and free of people you would worry about being alone with... Is a beautiful thing. And seriously reduces the friction for all kinds of things like...going to work. The countries like this usually don't have much traffic and therefore deliveries and other legitimate uses of the road are frequently unobstructed. But on the other hand, these places can be extremely dense and the people live on top of each other.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There are many regions of the US denser than areas in europe with good transportation. People try to explain away the US system by pointing out a few low density areas and say "see these 3 big empty areas in the center? All these differences are necessary" but its sort of a outlier situation run amok. Most of the US IS comparable to europe or asia and we've once again let ourselves be content with "American Exceptionalism" by another name.

The reality is just the US developed much of its infrastructure (1940s-1960s) with car companies basically calling the shots during that era and a lot of places in the US still are struggling to overcome 60+ years of laws and budgets more or less written by the car manufacturers themselves after their WW2 high where their competitors overseas all got bombed to hell.

The reality is the USA had public transport systems that were criminally dismantled by the car cartels.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a documentary.

Great article, absolutely blows my mind that people really live like this. I just visited Edinburgh where I walked over 10km every day. The american mind can’t comprehend this.

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I'm an American and walk 10km almost every day here in Chicago. The American mind definitely comprehends this.

[–] 1hitsong@lemmy.ml 26 points 2 days ago

I'm an American in the deep South. Most of our roads don't have sidewalks. Unless I make an effort, and walk in the road, I could easily have under 2000 steps a day. 😐

[–] CactusEcho@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago

That's a lot of walking to reach a bus stop!

Joking 😉

[–] jpreston2005@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

“I hope it leaves Americans more supportive of investing in infrastructure. That would be a good outcome.”

Hopefully...

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Anyone know how many tickets have been sold? Would be interesting if it was actually able to turn off soccer fans from coming.

[–] FarceOfWill@infosec.pub 2 points 1 day ago

I did recently see an article saying hotel bookings were way down, far too low compared to what was expected.

Ticket sales were fine due to touts of course.
