AI is still largely affected by garbage in garbage out.

Exactly. When it comes to code, for instance, what percentage of the training data is Knuth, Carmack, and similarly skilled programmers, and what percentage is spaghetti code perpetrated by underpaid and uninterested interns?

Shitty code in the wild massively outweighs properly written code, so by definition an LLM autocomplete engine, which at best can only produce an average of its training model, will only produce shitty code. (Of course, though, average or below average programmers won't be able — or willing — to recognise it as shitty code, so they'll feel like it's saving them time. And above average programmers won't have a job anymore, so they won't be able to do anything about it.)

And as more and more code is produced by LLMs the percentage of shitty code in the training data will only get higher, and the shittiness will only get higher, until newly trained LLMs can only produce code too shitty to even compile, and there will be no programmers left to fix it, and civilisation will collapse.

But, hey, at least the line went up for a while and Altman and Huang and their ilk will have made obscene amounts of money they didn't need, so it'll have been worth it, I suppose.

That's why you split the ship in two and spin the habitation module around the heavier part of the ship¹, connected by a tether, as in Project Hail Mary (which the video says is still too fast... so just make the tether longer).

  1. Well, around their common barycentre, but you know what I mean.

Yeah, try it on someone else's junk.

They have to sign a pact that they must not invest into AI anymore for a given amount of years (20+ minimum).

Problem is this might hurt actual AI research to punish a scam that has absolutely nothing to do with AI other than having coopted the name for marketing purposes.

(Any investment in actual AI research is doomed for decades anyway when this bubble pops, but this would cause even more harm than the bubble has already caused.)

(Also any form of research is probably ruined for decades anyway due to LLM-induced brain rot and having to sift through all the slop to try to recover any remaining fragments of actually useable knowledge, but, again, let's not make it even worse than it already is).

Sure, he's a shitty person who makes shitty comics, no one is denying that.

I'm just saying that you can separate the work from the author and interpret it however you want.

Unlike in the ones you posted, where the shitty message is obvious, I don't know if the author intended the comic in the OP to have some shitty anti-LGBT message (though if he did he did a poor job of it, since I don't see it); my interpretation of it is the one in my original comment (downvoted, I assume, by people with negative reading comprehension or idiots who think video games are actually harmful); as I said, when it comes to authors who turn out to be shitty people I think it's better to ignore them and their intentions and appreciate the work for itself.

I mean, about 99% of people, including authors (in fact probably a higher percentage when it comes to authors), are horrible bastards, so if you can't appreciate whatever good works they might have accidentally produced you'll have a pretty thin selection to choose from.

Don't support them and warn other people about their personal shittiness, sure, but don't rip out your own eyes to avoid being offended.

Not anymore, in the USA. It's fallen off the edge and shattered.

The physics of it are a mystery to me.

Basic lever principle? Give me a broom, a place to stand, and I'll snap it in half kind of thing?

Essentially, broom end on the floor, one hand on the top, other in the middle, where it will snap.

Press down towards the floor with the hand in the middle, while holding the end of the broom with the other one preventing it from getting closer to the floor, and snap, you've got a bent or snapped broom handle, depending on what it's made of.

Or don't, if you don't want to ruin the broom.

Easy to do inadvertently if you apply too much force trying to rub off something stuck to the floor, if you're not careful not to press down towards the floor with the hand closest to the ground.

I think playing with the body and especially the mind (through eugenics, genetic engineering, or any other means) is as big of a nono in the Star Trek universe as fascism, due to trauma from the eugenic wars (you know, when Khan and his ilk fought baseline humanity).

Body modification enthusiasts, transhumanists, furries, and anything like that are probably treated with fear, loathing, and disgust.

Heck, they won't even treat baldness despite being perfectly able to fix it if they wanted to, and they don't seem to have made any effort to cure aging, despite being able to cure almost everything else; their life expectancy isn't much higher than ours, when it should be much higher.

You want that kind of thing try Iain M. Banks' Culture series. Even more freedom to live your life however you want, the only limits to body modification are your imagination and some of the laws of physics (much less than in Start Trek, though), and people live to a healthy 300 or so, throw a party, and die in their own terms because they're done, or curious. Or do not, no one is forcing them, they can keep on living if they want to.

Heck, one character used to have about sixty penises all over his body, just for fun. No more, though, even with four hearts at that point it was starting to get difficult to maintain an erection at the same time in all of them.

If only it was only your country... they want to strip away everything from everyone else's too.

I think the position to adopt is very clear:

  1. You stand upright facing the nearest government building.
  2. You extend your right arm horizontally in front of you.
  3. You rest your left hand, palm down, on top of your right arm, next to your antecubital fossa (the opposite side of the elbow).
  4. You make a fist with your right hand.
  5. Without opening your fist, you extend your right hand's middle finger straight up.
  6. You decisively bend your right arm at the elbow, standing your forearm, fist, and middle finger straight up.

Thus you achieve the only reasonable position towards this nonsense.

No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.

— Heraclitus

I assume the OP is asking, in jest, if the same applies to women, and having sex with instead of stepping in.

Personally I think it's the same ship or axe, and the same person, even if it's not the same physical object anymore, because “my grandfather's axe” means more than just this specific combination of head and handle, and has more to do with the history and sentimental value of the thing, and what it meant to my grandfather and what it means to me.,

And that while it's obviously not the same water or even, if the river meanders and you wait long enough, the same river bed, a river is more of a geographic concept than a physical thing, so, yeah, it's also the same river, inasmuch as a river is a thing.

(As for the first part, sure, of course women can step in rivers, be they or not the same one, same as men, just as they can own ships or grandfathers' — or even grandmothers' — axes.)

I think a shower head would make more sense, though, unless the river has some safe but high pressure enough rapids. Or if she considers the fish part of the river, in which case, ew. But maybe it's more of a platonic thing, what do I know.

Bug Report

Describe the issue:

The font size of the comments appears to be random (see attached screenshot).

The global and comment font size settings don't seem to have any effect.

It doesn't seem to correlate with comment length, depth, age, score, or any other variable I can think of.

I just updated the app and it's still happening.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a post's comments.
  2. Scroll. Unfold folded comments.
  3. Notice the rich variety of font sizes.
  4. Struggle to read the smaller ones because you're not as young as you used to be.

Bug Report

Describe the issue: Images are loaded at extremely low resolution.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Find a post with an image, preferably with text.
  2. Touch it to open it full screen to see the details or read the text.
  3. Observe the meagre amount of pixels (see example above).
  4. Squint to try to read the text.
  5. Fail due to pixel insufficiency.
  6. Despair.
  7. Touch “open external” to open the post on the browser (https://mander.xyz/post/43475080 for the attached example).
  8. Open the image in the browser.
  9. Marvel at the difference in resolution compared to the one opened in the app.
