Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Driving the news: The posters — which read "ARRESTED" — specify various crimes linked to the pictured immigrants and have the White House's official logo at the bottom.

-The "roughly 100" posters were being placed strategically along "Pebble Beach," where TV news crews do live shots in front of the mansion. A White House official told Axios the intent is for the posters to be visible behind TV journalists reporting from those positions.

-Posters positioned near the West Wing claim to show unauthorized immigrants arrested for "first-degree murder," "sexual abuse of a child," "kidnapping and rape," "murder," "rape of a child," and "distribution of fentanyl."

-Others claim to show people charged with "sexual assault of minors," "sexual contact with a child," and "lewd acts in front of a child."

-The posters describe the arrestees as "illegal aliens." Their names and precise legal statuses aren't included.

I would not be surprised if in a month it turns out a bunch of those don't match with the crimes

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Not only that, but I bet there are a bunch of people here who really are US citizens, and a bunch more who are either here legally, or were until the President canceled their visas just for this stunt.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 0 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Not only that, but I'm guessing what's printed are the crimes they're accused of rather than anything they've been convicted of.

Anyone can accuse anyone of anything at any time. That's why courts exist.

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

It just says arrested so I'm wagering these guys were never given a trial, just deported to who the fuck knows where.

[–] Sizing2673@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Definitely. There is no more due process in the US

I'm not sure why people keep being surprised by this recently. All of the recent events over the last month tell us there's no more due process

We just found out ICE can come into anybody's home without a warrant, and send them to concentration camps that we pay millions for...

The Nazis are here. We are Nazi Germany right now, for people to ask or be confused on why they are evil or what their motive is, their motive is just evil That's it. And it has to be stopped before it's too late

I’m guessing what’s printed are the crimes they’re accused of rather than anything they’ve been convicted of.

So Trump's picture should be up there.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ironically, no. He's actually been convicted of 34 felonies.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, but he has been accused of child sexual assault. As you say, anyone can make an accusation and he has been accused.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's a complicated situation, lol, and I can see both sides of it.

As for that being "a taste of his own medicine", I agree.

Ultimately, though, I feel putting an actual convicted felon alongside people who are highly likely to be only accused of crimes sends the wrong message and gives them the implication of guilt.

Depends how you look at it, I guess lol.

Why not both? Put up posters of him with all/each of the allegations, and stamp CONVICTED across each of those. Since the immigrant ones don't have the stamp, just like some of the Trump ones, the distinction is made.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 0 points 1 year ago

I think my conscience could live with that. Even more so if we can stamp "UN-CONVICTED" on all the other ones.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

That would be a very elegant solution.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They sound like an ai was told to generate 100 different horrable crimes.

Do we know if the same crime text is used twice? It’s weird to talk about minor in one and child in the other.

This is all obvious theater and many of these are just pics of these people. No way to tell if they've actually been arrested before or if it's just random security footage, but the text differences might be that different states have different terminology. What classifies as rape or molestation or contact or anything else can differ from place to place. It might still be AI, but it's not unusual for the same crime to have different names depending on where it was committed.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 0 points 1 year ago

I would not be surprised that the images are ai generated, since there's no information on the individuals to look them up and fact check.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Or it’s just random people.

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Wouldn't be surprised if they were AI generated.

Considering that they're making completely unsupported allegations re: Abrego Garcia, I have no trust whatsoever that they did more than elementary school research into the crimes they're attributing, and assume that nearly none of them are supported by court convictions.
