They'll push the update through Google Play Services, so if your phone is Gapps free, you'll probably be able to continue to use F-Droid.

Honestly, I felt the same but when I try to order for evilness somehow it didn't get on top 3.
While I kinda understand the steep price, not being able to use with other than Steam is a deal breaker for me. Yes, you can create shortcuts inside Steam and use the controller like that probably but still. On the other hand, I can use the old Steam controller even on a browser alongside with the rest of my OS.

Out of many games, Final Fantasy titles were the least of my expectations to see on GOG. If you know Square Enix, you surely understand.
