After three years in development, GNU Guix 1.5 has been released, marking the start of a newly adopted annual release cycle. But if this name has flown under your radar, let me briefly explain what it is before we move on to the news.

First and foremost, Guix is both a transactional package manager and a full GNU/Linux distribution built around it. As a package manager, guix can be installed on top of most existing Linux systems, where it operates independently of native tools like apt or dnf.

At the same time, Guix System is a standalone operating system (Linux distro) that uses the same technology to declaratively manage the entire OS, including the kernel, system services, and user environments.

SEIU Local 26 and UNITE HERE Local 17 organized the protest, joined by airport workers wearing Airport Workers United hats and community supporters. Additional co-sponsors included Jewish Community Action, Minnesota Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Alliance, the interfaith group ISAIAH, SEIU MN State Council, Indivisible Twin Cities, Women’s March Minnesota, Minnesota AFL-CIO, Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, and 50501: Minnesota.

The crowd marched from the terminal to the offices of Signature Aviation — a private aviation terminal used by some private charter planes for deportation flights.

Geof Paquette, lead internal organizer for UNITE HERE Local 17, opened a short rally, saying, “The labor movement is proud to be here today with members of our community to fight for immigrant rights.” He noted that both his union and SEIU Local 26 are largely composed of immigrant workers who “make the airport run” and generate millions in profits for airline companies. Food-service workers in the terminal, he added, recently voted to strike ahead of the busiest travel days of the year; their action prompted the Metropolitan Airports Commission to grant the largest pay increases ever won at the airport.

I understand time is needed for a proper review as well as needing additional time to accommodate for the fact that it's all run by volunteers.

However, most of us simply want transparency. There has been no formal announcement thread on this to my knowledge, just replies to the threads that get started about it.

If you're investigating, announce what, why, and how far along. Give us details as to what's going on and the options that are on the table. It doesn't have to be a meticulous blow-by-blow, but the transparency so far is on the other end of the extreme. Maybe if y'all were trying to move against him before he knew what was happening I could see it, but there's no way he doesn't know what's going down at this point.

It does show he is not going to learn from or sincerely apologize for his transphobic statement

Furthermore, I think it's perfectly fine to bring up such a problematic statement from a person, no matter how old it is, for as long as it's still relevant. Just because he isn't making statements publicly doesn't mean he doesn't still believe these things, or takes actions (e.g. voting) that supports these statements.

If he had retracted his statements, gave a sincere apology and made some effort to educate himself then it would be different. Then I'd be right along with you in stating that it should just be allowed to rest.

But given that Nutomic has clearly demonstrated that he hasn't done any of that in the time since his original statement, then it's fair game to keep such things about his character in the public mind
