during the sketch show’s goodnights, Myers’ slogan tee — unveiled after he unzipped his vest — was accompanied by the actor mouthing “elbows up,” a reference to Canadian hockey icon Gordie Howe’s slogan toward aggressive opponents on the ice.

“Fascism doesn’t like to be ridiculed; it likes to be feared,” he concluded. “Satire is an important tool in the toolbox to say that this is not normal — that the cuts [Elmo]’s making are not normal.”

Mike spawned a big protest movement with that simple gesture

[–] phantomfigure@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

As a fellow Canadian, I'm 100% behind Mike using the platform he had to convey that message. Tons of respect for it.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As an American, I support him, too.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Speaking on behalf of all ogres, we fully support Mr. Meyers.

Onion clan checking in, we’re layered up and ready to go

[–] bowreality@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago

And wasn’t that ever genius? He fired us up and united us even more. And he gave the movement a name that’s now worldwide recognized. I have seen tons of people from Europe, Australia and even Asia use it.

Not only am I behind it but I encourage it of others as well.

Along with Mike Myers, we need Wayne Campbell back. Myers has said many times that Wayne was Canadian in character although the lore had to say he was from Aurora, Illinois because he needed to be American to get into SNL. Make up a new storyline that he was born in Canada to Canadian parents who moved to the states when he was young or something.

Speaking of which, we need the MacKenzie brothers back too. Bring back Great White North. Coo-ooo-coo-coo-coo-coo-coo-cooooo…. Coo-ooo-coo-coo-coo-coo-coo-coooooooooo….

[–] tunetardis@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Huh. I always thought he was from Aurora, Ontario.

[–] darkpanda@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago

Myers has said the character is based on his experiences growing up in and around Toronto and started developing the character long before bringing it to SNL.

As for which Aurora, from the first movie:

My name is Wayne Campbell. I live in Aurora, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. Excellent! … Okay, I still live with my parents, which I admit is both bogus and sad, but at least I've got an amazing cable access show, and I still know how to party.

Canadian artists need to start acting like they mean it and come back to Canada to produce Canadian content. Anglo Canadians want to prove they aren't just Americans with healthcare? They have to prove that they have their own culture. Quebec and the King can't be the only things that makes Canada special compared to the US if it wants to stay independent from it.

You've got rush, and mother mother, and trailer park boys and letterkenny. Do you really need a washed up 90s sketch comedy actor?

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What we don’t need is douchebags, so thanks for not being Canadian.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Your right, I was wrong for focusing on the fantastic art Canada has made in the last 30 years, what you really need is HEY REMEMBER THIS GUY FROM 1992

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you can’t figure out where the douchebaggery is in your comments, I don’t know how to help you.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

If you can't accept that Canadas culture has moved beyond Wayne's world I don't know how to help you

[–] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 year ago

Guess we should focus on newer shows then.

Have you seen The Pentaverate?

[–] jaemo@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hey, keep digging this hole you got going here. Maybe if you get all the way to China you won't come across as such a COLOSSAL DOUCHE CANOE.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago

I'm perfectly fine in my "Canadas culture is doing just fine without a guy who hasn't really done anything noteworthy in decades" hole tyvm

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Canada has made a ton of amazing art. But what they need right now is every Canadian hand on deck. If Myers is able to inspire more Canadian resistance to American threats then he's part of what they need.

The freedom to ridicule is fundamental to keep hate out of the mainstream. Fascism feeds off of fear and hate, and the best cures to them are comedy and comradery.

You see it all over the world and history. Anywhere fascism is going strong, the people fear and hate like no other. But when people are filled with positive vibes, they come together and work together for the betterment of all rather than bring each other down which ends up bringing themselves down.

Hate doesn't belong in Canada, just like how fascism doesn't belong here.

Donald Trump doesn't care about Canadian people

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Donald Trump doesn't care about anyone except Donald Trump.

Oh, he's got some inclinations towards Ivanka....

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago

He doesn't care about anyone but himself. As long as he's the centre of attention and making millions illegally, he's happy.

[–] boaratio@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is this a reference to the Kanye West" George Bush doesn't care about black people" thing?

[–] svc@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] boaratio@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Then I assume it is.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He doesn't care about US people either.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He doesn't care about ~~US~~ people.

just one. himself. no one else has ever been more than a stray thought bouncing between the two-and-a-half brain cells tucked under that gawd-awful rug.

[–] TomatoPotato69@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago

Two and a half brain cells is an awfully big complement for that filthy fascist fuck-stain.
