Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Is that a weird thing for a woman to do?

[–] MarcomachtKuchen@feddit.org 33 points 2 weeks ago

How dare you?!?!

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I wish we could choose it more often tbh

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 weeks ago

Me too. Horizon zero dawn was one of my favorite female ones.

Eh, depends on the game. I look at both and pick whichever one looks or sounds fun. Last few games I was a whole team of women in turn based games. Current game I'm a lone wolf male. Sometimes I find it funny making the cutest girl and whomping on enemies, othertimes I make an ugly old lady or man. Sometimes I make them look like me, or my wife, or one of my kids. Litterally depends all on my mood and whimsy at the time.

[–] Emptiness@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Fellow dad here that does the exact same thing. I wish I could add anything useful to this but you've already so eloquently explained it. Thank you for that.

[–] yaroto98@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago

My wife still teases me for how I play stardew valley. I was in a grumpy old man "get off my lawn" mood when I made my character. Played through it and hated how completing quests bumped up your reputation. So, I made extra effort to give people trash gifts so they liked me less.

My character fishes, farms, explores caves, and is drunk whenever he's in town, and liberally gives out trash to everyone that he crosses. Everyone hates him and that's exactly how he wants it.

He since retired to the island as he finds the lack of people peaceful.

i like dressing up girls :3

[–] alx@lemmy.zip 32 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

You got me, as my defence women characters often have better clothing options, hairstyles options, VA, etc. Lets a man play dress up in peace 😂

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (4 children)

Literally why my version of "the boss" from ~~SR 2~~ Saints Row is canonically trans.

"Let me play dress up with this mexican looking fat avatar that looks like me"... ooooor "let me make a sexy looking busty lady and put her in all kinds of cool outfits"

🤔

yeah, I should have just ignored the character customisation aspect entirely and stayed looking like a schlub in game just to prove to myself that I'm a man.

I also would rather play more games written for a female protagonist. 3 decades of male player characters is plenty.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I have something similar watching movies/shows with women protagonists that are meant for women audiences. Tired of watching guy main characters ig, still totally cis tho!

By the time someone says "still cis tho," they're already cooked

[–] Blurntout@lemmy.ca 25 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Only when there models are hot oof I’ve never made a female dwarf character but those Korean boob sliders lol

Got one comment when I was younger from my girlfriend about how I never played a woman in games and now I almost always do

[–] Bamboodpanda@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If I’m going to spend the next 300 hours staring at a character’s ass, I’m picking one I actually want to look at.

Well of course? What else should I be playing as if not? A dinosaur? Don't be silly! Who would play as a dinosaur in a videogame?

nervous laugh

[–] likebudda@reddthat.com 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I remember starting Genshin and given identical abilities, I preferred to look at a female character for the first few hours. I don't project myself into games, I always feel like I'm playing the characters as themselves.

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

Same. First person game I don’t care, but third person I want to look at a lady.

[–] huquad@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Back in the runescape days, I used to get tons of free shit by being a girl. When they stopped gifting, I'd convince them to come to the wild and kill them for the rest of their shit

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Okay but what about in Runescape?

Yes, because I enjoy looking at women more

[–] Fornicus@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Always have, always will. Smaller Character models take up less space in 3rd person games and are harder to see in pvp.

Also cake.

[–] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

In see a dude every day in the mirror. Let me have fun and see something different in videogames

[–] Varesti@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm glad you enjoy it too!

[–] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If they won't let me make a twinky guy then yeah (mainly an issue in Western titles)

I just go with whatever looks better. Or if there’s total customization, I imagine a backstory and go with whatever fits the backstory.

I’d guess my overall rates are something like 65% male, 35% female.

[–] fantacyde@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Ever since questioning my identity I began playing girls more and enjoying character creation for once. Before, I always just hit random and entered said game.

Yes I want to become queen of all Calradia and destroy those pesky Rhodoks once and for all!

[–] Ydna@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The Matrix character named Switch had it correct the whole time 🙌

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 2 weeks ago

Real heads remember the studio ruining switch's original story...

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Depends on what character I'm wanting to develop at the time, but yeah, a lot of my oc's are women (although not necessarily female). I like to use the game as inspiration for lore. When I played cyberpunk 2077, I already had a character named V who's a cyborg rabbit girl, so it was close enough to perfect.

and fem V's voice actor just does a better job tbh

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I only did it once. I'd heard that the male version of the character had terrible voice acting.
