Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

They added a "feature" where to improve the loading time of the start menu (which is already a fucked up thing to need to say) they briefly lift power limits from the cpu when you press start

[–] DaGeek247@fedia.io 91 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Lmaoooooo. What if people started pressing start to fix their game fps because that?

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 108 points 3 weeks ago

Reminds me of the spacebar heating xkcd

This is so fucked up. They know the thing they built is shit, and they refuse to go back on it, so the hack shit to make it seem like it's less shit.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 73 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

Its only the recommended section thats written in react.

https://youtu.be/kMJNEFHj8b8

We got plenty of real things to clown on Microsoft with. We dont need to make shit up. This is just rage bait.

[–] DaGeek247@fedia.io 149 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Ah gotcha. So it's not strictly correct to call the whole start menu a react application, just a part of it that always loads when you press the start button.

I'm all for being correct, but MS absolutely deserves being clowned on for this.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 16 points 3 weeks ago (6 children)

So let's clown on them for the 10% spike, let's not say that its because its 100% react when its not.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 29 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

In the end, every time you use your start menu you have to load the react crap. At that point, they could have done the whole thing in react with the same ramifications. I am all for correctness, but in real life use the start menu is visibly not working as it should, regardless of the element that is actually causing the issue here.

To the user and in function, there's very little difference between "It's React" and "It loads a React submodule every time you use it." The result is the same. Your first response is fair and informational. This one is pedantic.

That's actually worse. You do get how that's actually worse, right?

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 24 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, a hodgepodge of shit is of course worse. But fucken say that then. Dont say, "its literally a react native application! Thats why its so bad!" when that is not true and sounds ignorant.

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Personally, I am 100% grateful for this correction, because I didn’t know and since I’ve heard the less accurate ragebait version dozens of times at this point I would have been confused, next time I have to spin up a Win11 image, why I couldn’t replicate the spike I’ve heard so much about. The fact that it’s tied to a particular UI component, one of many that machine provisioning scripts and playbooks commonly disable, means it would have remained a bothersome unresolved mystery to me forever if not for your comment. So thanks.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 7 points 3 weeks ago

Oh it still spikes without the recommendations lmao at least my work laptop was because I, too, have all the bullshit registry entries to make Start Menu usable and resource monitor was showing 10% spikes on average each time I opened the start menu. Wild.

I try not to let such considerations get in the way of posting excellent ragebait.

I'm a React developer too and I went tf off on the project manager who suggested we replace the company's perfectly fine Wordpress homepage with a self-built page running on React. Actually, never ever use React for anything that matters. It's exclusively suited for making janky browser games and B2B applications.

[–] GeirGrusom@lemmy.world 27 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

We had a Svelte application. We chose svelte because it's simpler than React is, and it's much faster. However further down the line a consultant said to the CTO that we should move to React. I said React is more complicated and has more edge cases, and its slower, but the consultant said more people know react and it has a bigger community, so we switched to React. This was fairly early in the project. React has sooo many edge cases. It's not made with async in mind, if you forget to add a [] to a useEffect it just breaks your application completely instead of doing the more sensible thing, it says "don't use useEffect" but there's so many "except when" that you end up using it everywhere regardless. Later on the CTO got all in on Claude Code, so we spent the easter holidays rewriting the app in Svelte. Except a few bugs it was feature complete by that week and in production a few days later.

It's much, MUCH faster now, and the code is much simpler. We lost absolutely nothing by moving back to Svelte but gained a lot.

Edit: not that using either of these is sane thing to do in the start menu. The start menu should not be a web application.

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, you'd use htmx on the start menu. It has all the telemetry these guys want

[–] yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

What's a B2B application? Backend To Backend?

TL;DR: Microsoft devs are mac users.

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Ironically Apple would never allow a first party app to be anything other than Swift. No React allowed.

Is this for real? The guy that coded windows start menu doesn't consider performance to be relevant to good software?

Also what is react native? Is it the js library adapted to the windows desktop API?

[–] DaGeek247@fedia.io 82 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The twitter thread is a fabrication.

The react native shit? all true. True enough that MS made an announcement talking about how they had removed it even. https://www.windowslatest.com/2026/03/21/microsoft-confirms-windows-11-start-menu-performance-boost-shift-to-winui-from-web-based-components/

As far as I can tell, react native is a way to make easy cross-compatible gui components in javascript. One of the more stupid things ms has done lately.

[–] MirrorGiraffe@piefed.social 14 points 3 weeks ago

Cross compatibility betong one of the things that's not very necessary in an OS.

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, it's so bad because it's so easy to do right.

[–] mavu@discuss.tchncs.de 34 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

that's fake... right? Please?

[–] AlboTheGuy@feddit.nl 27 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Clearly a guy pretending to be the developer 🤣

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah but that applies to most of MS's engineering staff.

While working for a CDN I learned that every press of the Windows 10 Start button involved at least one call to at least one remote hostname to fetch data about the local weather to be shown in the Start menu. I presume machines were caching the response for a while, but realizing that this host was getting poked (and who knows how many others) every time someone clicked that button continues to blow my mind.

PS: 🤘

J'en reviens pas que c'est un québécois qui a implémenté le menu démarrer de Windows 11.

J'haïs le nouveau menu.

Si j'le voué m'en va y donner un char de marde.

If I could go back in time but only have the power to change something really inconsequential, I'd go to whenever this episode of Dexter's Laboratory was written and force the writers to correct it to "omelette au fromage".

This is absolutely my dumbest pet peeve. Instead of cheese omelet, "omelette du fromage" reads as "omelet from cheese".

I for one appreciate people maintaining their unique language and culture.

J’haïs

Now I want Québécois to be the only French language option in Windows 11.

[–] vzqq@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

un char de marde

Is that 8 bits of marde?

That doesn’t sound like a lot of marde, but probably more marde than I would like to receive on any given day.

Be grateful its not written with straight up react wrapped in electron

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It saddens me that it isn't. That would be a lot funnier. Well, as long as you aren't forced to use it in your life. I use Arch btw

[–] KernelTale@programming.dev 5 points 3 weeks ago

It might as well be. My sister has a better hardware than me and it takes on her Device like half a minute to load the start menu on first try. On my CachyOS it takes idk. I can't distinguish that well regarding fractions of a second.

[–] BilSabab@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

Insert some linux joke about CPU efficiency.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 weeks ago

I really hope this is real
