None could. It wouldn't have been spent on the homeless and even if it was more than 90% would be eaten up by grift, studies and administrative costs.

[–] BlindPenguin@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Also, it's peanuts compared to other things money is spent on...

[–] arcine@jlai.lu 38 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

A real shame how incredibly ugly it is.

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 33 points 3 weeks ago

I bet the Jawas have some great droids on sale in there.

[–] aeiou@piefed.social 16 points 3 weeks ago

The Ziggurat of Barak

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That was my first thought as well, it really is a hideous building.

[–] harmbugler@piefed.social 8 points 3 weeks ago

I like it. I used to hate brutalism but it's grown on me.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The Lincoln museum in Springfield is pretty fancy. Even though much smaller. It's a smaller city. But they put some giant statue of some dude in a dad sweater out front with lincoln. Idk. It's weird. And kinda disrespectful imo.

Like could be kids with Lincoln. But why a guy next to him. ?

Look.at the scale.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah that’s really a bizarre choice

[–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

For the public

.... It's a private museum that's been built on a public park

Also it's ugly as shit

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Also it's ugly as shit

Look it in the eye and say that.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

But why the brutalist architecture though? It is this supposed to be post-modern? The words(?) engraved up there is an interesting touch.

[–] Frenchgeek@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

How else are you supposed to figure out where to buy droids from?

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 4 points 3 weeks ago

LOL now that you mention it, it does look straight out of Star Wars.

[–] riot@slrpnk.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

Although the building houses a public library branch, this is the Obama Presidential Centre, not the Obama Presidential Library. There seems to be a lot of confusion around this.

[–] moopet@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I don't understand this, so please help me out without thinking I'm trolling. Aren't liberals on the left? Who is the meme making fun of, the top quoter or the bottom one?

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 11 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

No. Liberalism is firmly a center-right ideology.

[–] moopet@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

So in the US, why do the right-wingers go on about "owning the libs" as if libs (by which I read "liberals") are on the opposite end to the far-right?

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Because the American far-right is even further to the right and more insular than the Liberals. Just because both are politically right-wing ideologies doesn't mean they are friendly with each other. Same thing happened in Nazi Germany, the fascists hated the liberals then too but the liberals still played the concession game thinking they could keep the monster tamed.

Then there is the decades of political manipulation through the shifting of the Overton Window and the Liberal establishment co-opting leftist movements by claiming they are "the left" in order to hamstring any discussion from challenging capitalist interests making things even more confusing for those who do not have enough understanding of political science to know the differences.

[–] moopet@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Here in the UK, we have the Liberal Democrats party, who are kind of centre-left. I know that in Australia, for example, their "Liberal" party is basically the equivalent of our Conservatives, i.e. centre-right to full-right. I guess I just grew up with "liberal" meaning "leftish".

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

This is the problem with words having both an academic definition and a colloquial one, which oftentimes have no correlation to each other beyond being the same word.

The ideology known as "Liberalism", from which the political moniker "liberal" originates, is by definition a center-right ideology. It has no bearing on what different political parties want to dub themselves. Those names are arbitrary and not bound by the political definition of terms.

Depends on your view point. From a European perspective liberalism is center right, although I'd say that the so called liberalism as discussed in the US is pretty well into the right. The whole spectrum has shifted, so I'd say that what used to be conservative talking points are now liberal talking points.

[–] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

This. To expand for those not familiar with US idiocy, liberal is synonymous with progressive policy, but they haven't the slightest what that truly is. Its population is so ill informed that their media calls center-right policy 'socialist communism' or some other such nonsense and the masses uncritically lap it up.

[–] girsaysdoom@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah the Overton Window is pretty bad in the US.

Everything related to the welfare of others is dogmatically condemned as unfair and evil by the political right, while also continuing with US tradition of shooting down anything with the label of socialism. Centrists can't tell what's up from down and blindly accept that those policies were unfair or unnecessary. Meanwhile, informed social progressives have either moved further left or buried their heads to survive the sheer amount of propaganda that their out of touch centrist colleagues are repeating.

Everyone is exhausted except for the alt-right; who also are loving the oppression and lies that the current federal government dealing out. The media is completely captured by tech oligarchs and perpetuates the propaganda by framing it as the only way to think.

It's not hard to see why things are the way they are given that its a coin toss between people who follow whatever source of truth is easiest and those who are invested in finding their flavor of truth.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

to survive the sheer amount of propaganda that their out of touch centrist colleagues are repeating.

You mean to hide from the shame of giving the country to the right. The only people "out of touch" are those who refuse to believe that more than their specific niche is required to prevail in the system we find ourselves in. No one on the left of right wants compromise, they all want total victory.

[–] girsaysdoom@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I don't agree with that. The centrists that remain "neutral" don't see there being any political issues, just a president that is controversial whose policy they may not agree with but they'd rather keep their personal connections and appeal to "both sides." Thus, they hear deception from the right, believe it as truth, and the tug of war continues because they lack critical thinking to determine it as a lie or a spine to refute it.

Your last sentence sounds ignorant. Of course there's no negotiating compromise when all the right is offering is harm at this point.

Edit: Oh, I read the first portion as the centrists but you were talking about progressives. It's probably some shame for those that didn't vote but I think it's more about mental health and coming to terms that the system doesn't balance itself. Too many were complacent with what we had and recent events are quite the wake-up call.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

their media

right wing media calls it that. They call everything they think they don't like "communism".

[–] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Is there any US media that isn't right wing?

[–] Soulg@ani.social 2 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The Overton window is very very bad here. Msnbc/Ms now would be the closest but it's still only 1-2 people in the network.

And no, I don't give a flying fuck what they'd be considered in Europe, things are very different here. See the Overton window being very very bad

I’d say that what used to be conservative talking points are now liberal talking points.

Like what?

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

people conflate 2 kinda of liberal: liberal is the same root word as liberty, libertarian: liber, which basically means free

economic liberal (like the australian liberal party) means free from government interference in business/economy. it’s basically libertarian

socially liberal means free from government interference in your life (ie liberty; government says nothing about lgbtqi+ unless it’s about protecting you from discrimination)

in the US in particular “liberal” has tended to means socially liberal (at least in how they campaign) but neoliberal economically (pro big business)

socialism is actually diametrically opposed to economic liberalism

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I like it, it looks like something that would hold Cthulhu inside, dreaming.

However, we have had many Presidents, and in my opinion we don't need a different museum for every one of these disappointments; it could have gone to many other things that we actually need, like scholarships or even healthcare bills in collections. Thanks for nothing, you hack

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 weeks ago

This isn't condemning liberals; it's probably condemning racists who let Trumps and Musks skate for largesse but castigate the non-white successes who dare to look the slightest bit wasteful. And those people aren't usually liberals.

It's hard to tell if the top is someone on the right admonishing it with an argument not in good faith or someone on the left doing it. I get the outrage if it's a leftist but money for austerity projects like this would never go toward housing the homeless, especially now.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (7 children)

So "leftists" don't like liberals because they don't understand the difference between private and public funding?
