The initial investigation indicates that the pickup driver was following the bus too closely,

Nothing to do with too close, there's plenty of distance. They just didn't stop.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 150 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah. The driver of the truck wasn't paying attention.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 96 points 1 week ago (9 children)

And was going way too fast.

There's was an Olympics swimming pool worth of distance between them. The driver was clearly playing with their phone, not looking out the windscreen.

Sounds like they need to fire their investigators.

That's a good dad right there.

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 120 points 1 week ago (2 children)

A hug being the immediate first reaction is nice yeah <3

[–] drolex@sopuli.xyz 62 points 1 week ago

And second reaction: go see and help.

A most decent person.

...

Though what are the odds he initially said to the youth "you'll never leave this place" before going to loot 4 PBJ sandwiches in the wrecked bus

[–] notwhoyouthink@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 week ago

I felt the relief in that hug, just by watching it. What a real one.

Also debris barely missed the kid’s head, what a near miss on many levels.

The initial investigation indicates that the pickup driver was following the bus too closely, Jiron said.

Just for curiousity...did the police think to check the fucking doorbell camera?

"Too closely"? My man he's a good 50-100m away from that bus at the start of the clip, and the bus didn't just jack on its brakes, that was a slow and diliberate stop.

Following to closely. Lol.

That dad coming out, seeing that, then giving his son a hug was probably the most relieved he’s ever been in his life.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 81 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That truck didn't even attempt to brake. Driver asleep? Or too busy reading Twatter on his phone?

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 69 points 1 week ago (13 children)

You can hear the brakes being applied right before impact. Way too late, way too fast. Definitely phone.

Did they not see the video? Bus was almost at a full stop and it still took the truck 5 seconds to hit it at Mach Fuck. Not even a nervous driving instructor would call a >5 second follow distance "too close."

So what exactly was the driver fucking around with in the cab? Because they sure as fuck weren't watching the road.

Unless the driver was in the middle of having a medical emergency at the wheel, they are 100% at fucking fault and should be banned from driving for life, assuming they survive.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 46 points 1 week ago (6 children)

As someone who is on the road daily for work. He was on the phone. People are fucking insane. The latest "trend" i saw was that people in new-ish cars use their phone for navigation and the double din screen to watch tv shows or movies. The other day i was in a traffic jam. It was quite a big one. Like no one was moving for minutes. The 40 something lady next to me was just rolling back and forth like 4 or 5 meters, not even looking up once. She didn't stop, didn't turn off the car, just rubbing the clutch for minutes, reving their car. Absolutely insane

Guys the bus just jumped outta no where, he had no time to react. Plus it wasn't dressed in bright enough colors to be visible

[–] NoSpotOfGround@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Everything happened so fast, he had only minutes to react!

Now imagine that it was a sedan doing a carpool. Fuck everyone who drives a truck to commute around town. Fuck everyone who thinks, I'll buy a truck because I'll be safer. I hope gasoline goes up to $15 per gallon and every truck driving piece of shit has to choose between eating or driving because of their moronic vehicle buying decision.

Imagine being so dumb you miss something as big and yellow as a school bus. Fucking moron

The height of pickup trucks should be capped by law. No crash compatibility with normal vehicles, automatically hits pedestrians in their vital organs, can't see anyone sitting or fallen in front of it. What an absolutely idiotic society to let this kind of thing be driven on public roads without a special licence.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 39 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's not a full sized truck. That's some wankers oversized support vehicle

That hug hits hard. A few more steps forward and it would have been a terrible situation.

And the sun was behind that driver… it wasn’t even in his eyes. That’s probably the best lighting conditions imaginable, and they still missed the school bus.

Like WTF, dude. Why is it we don’t immediately revoke licenses for shit like this? Some people need to re-start from square one, yet we keep giving them fourth, fifth, and more chances to seriously injure or even kill others.

[–] hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 week ago

Probably on his phone

Bro Dozer is no match for the construction of a school bus. Thank goodness. That guy needs a timeout without a license.

Holy crap, that truck driver only looked up in the last quarter-second. They most certainly were not "following too closely", that's bullshit.

The driver of the 2007 Dodge Ram pickup was taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica for treatment of minor injuries...

In the past, that accident would have been fatal to the driver. The only thing that saved him was government regulation requiring safety features, paid for by taxes--just to put a nice, fine point on it. Not everything our governments do is horrible, but I suspect the motivation in this case was insurance company lobbying, not empathy. It's never empathy.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago

i’m a firefighter. seen a few of these “slams into a taller object like a bus or rig…” and that pickup is very lucky if he lived. i am glad to see that hug. and calm walk to the scene too. guy was smart.

I have seen more drivers not just using their phones, but holding them up in front of their faces, in dumb giant trucks more than all other vehicle types combined.

It's the standard duality of stupid conservatives that also makes them susceptible to fascist politics, like the thing where the enemy is both weak and strong.

They have to drive the biggest, most intimidating vehicle possible because of all the druggie minorities who are going to crash into them. But their Dunning-Kruger confidence in their flawless senses plus being in their rolling fortress "safe space" combine to make them some of the worst fucking drivers. And that's when they aren't carelessly driving drunk!
