While I agree with your entire sentiment,

powerless/spineless the rest of the gov is.

I would add "less openly but equally corrupt" to your summation.

Not for any reason having to do with security or usability, 1P had always been great for me in those areas. The reason I left them is because, while I was fine being unimportant in regards to their future improvement plans, when they wanted to charge me 30% more for new features that only benefited their business users, I was unwilling to stay with them. This article is a good example of what I mean. An entire update post regarding all the changes for business users and for the personal user? It goes on to say "don't worry, your experience won't be negatively impacted". I will never agree to that kind of price hike for what is basically "we won't make your experience shittier".

I would think it would be obvious but the answer is numbers and guns. A corrupt government would be unable to fight against 10s of millions of armed militants.

Although your question was "How would we fight" and although many Americans like to cosplay as well-armed superheros, there will never be a number of citizens large enough to risk their lives, safety and comfort for a greater good to achieve a successful uprising. The way "we would fight" would be sharing videos somebody else made on social networks, impotently arguing in comment sections and finding echo chambers to talk to like-minded individuals about how terrible the other half of America is.

If someone is using a VPN, they're at least a little tinkery and privacy-focused so maybe this will be the straw that breaks some of their decency on Microsoft.

Play is already sandboxed and as was explained to me on their forum, separate profiles do not further isolate apps from each other so I operate with a single profile policy to keep the complexity down. Keep in mind that privacy is not my primary concern but rather the usability of a smartphone so Ymmv.

This PSA brought to you by the folks at Audible.

I understand your point but if it's obvious, it's likely easily-guessable and although you are thinking in terms of regaining access to your account, it's just as important to keep other people from being able to gain access to your account by either guessing it or using social engineering to retrieve the answer.

I've used a password manager for many years (1password then bitwarden) and have never had an "oh shit" moment. I use a master password that I'll never forget, have never needed a hint and have never lost or corrupted a password. I feel that as long as you treat your password manager as something that's important and deserves your careful management, you'll be a-ok. I have never once had an issue that was created by the manager itself.

Making the MP hint obvious makes it pointless, in regards to the security to every password you have stored.

would it make more sense to state "By complete coincidence..."?

[–] schwim@piefed.zip 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That depends, would it work as well as our efforts of banning guns and drugs?

Meta and everything they do and stand for is why I chose Signal over Whatsapp.

There was a comedy movie(Steve Martin keeps popping in my head but that's probably wrong) in which there's a scene where a guy is asked either his SSN or maybe driver's license number and he responds with like "5" so the copy is waiting and says something like it's not enough numbers so the dude goes "42" and that goes on a bit before he just rattles off way too many numbers to the guy.

That's all I've got. I did the same to my daughter when she needed my SSN and I wanted to show her the clip but my fog-addled brain is failing to recall what movie it's from.

Hi there everyone,

I've been paring away the hooks that Google's got in me and although I feel I'm about at a level that I am comfortable with, Youtube remains a large part of my idle life(of which there's sometimes a lot). No matter what I'm doing on the second screen, I've got my subscription list running basically full time. It's pretty much my only viewing outet as I don't consume any other visual media.

My use case is casual viewing. I don't create any content, my interests are super-varied and none of it involves politics, news or the like. It's more along the lines of guitars, drums, covers, automotive, classics, drag racing, antique rehabbing, miniature and diarama building, DIY, traveling, geoguessing, exploration, retro computing, including building, weird things like offroad towing, lawn care transformations, etc. It's all over the place.

I'm posting this on Lemmy instead of Reddit or similar so I'm well aware of the trade-off to be made when choosing niche platforms. I know I'll get a ton less in quantity of answers but I trade that for the quality of the answers. I'm not expecting a direct replacement that gives me everything I would like. I'm just hoping to find something that I can use if I choose to whittle down my usage on the media format.

The problem is that I can't find a single platform that comes even remotely close to matching the usage of Youtube. 3rd party frontends are a completely lost cause as Google constantly breaks them intentionally. Peertube, the most suggested and my first-tried was comically unsuited to a viewer of content. The two platforms I tried to register to (so I could build sub lists, get recommendations, etc) refused my registration because they don't allow "casual viewers" to register. I'm posting this on the Fediverse so I'm well aware of the additional hoops required to participate but peertube takes it to a whole new level of lack of intuitiveness. It feels like it's actively designed to dissuade people from participating.

I tried Odysee but that's just terrible. The front page that greeted me is even worse ragebait, extremism, clickbait, reaction and low effort videos. I did some searching for some of my interests and guitar cover for a band I like, for instance had a most recent video of 3 years ago offered. Rumble's front page is a steaming pile of shit on a white background and not a single video was of interest to me so I know better than to waste my time trying to fit my square ass into a round hole.

I am not having any luck with this search, if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be greatly interested to hear them.

Thanks for your time!

Hi there everyone,

I tried posting on the grapheneos.org forum but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of the support there so I thought I'd try here.

I've got an install less than an hour old on a Pixel 6. I used the play store to successfully install a variety of apps, one of which was adguard. After about 10 app installs, Play store just persisted at thinking it's offline. I disabled adguard, restarted phone, force-closed the play store but nothing I tried works. A bit more testing, I also notice that apps like "The Weather Channel" just do the startup spinning icon indefinitely, perhaps because it's trying to connect to the play network and it can't as the play store still thinks it's offline.

Could anyone suggest something I can do to get it working again?

Thanks!

Hi there everyone,

I am trying out Blorp on both desktop browser and in app and everything for the most part is going swimmingly aside from this. I browse all usually in the hopes of finding new stuff but this often results in needing to block users(reposting something across 20 communities or bots), communities(foreign language or something I don't need, like politics or porn) or instances(again, usually foreign language or something like political or troll instances) and in normal piefed UI and my other piefed/lemmy apps, this is usually very easy, all found in a central dropdown.

I'm having problems figuring out if I'm just not doing it right or whether Blorp has spaced these three things out in completely different menus and dropdowns. I, in fact, still haven't found out how to block an instance while using the app.

Is there a central menu to handle a block like this when looking at any page, like front sorting page, community or post page or is it really different(or seemingly missing) when viewing different pages?

I'm liking the UI otherwise but I really can't use it if this part is as unintuitive as it seems as I need the feature often.

So this isn't as ambiguous as I'm making it, this is the type of consolidation of managing all three elements(user/community/instance) I'm talking about in the default UI:

Lyrics
Rat-tailed Jimmy is a second hand hood
Deals out in Hollywood
Got a '65 Chevy, primered flames
Traded for some powdered goods
Jigsaw Jimmy, he's the one in the game
But I hear he's doin' okay
Got a cozy little job selling the Mexican mob
Packages the candy cane

He's the one they call "Dr. Feelgood"
He's the one that makes ya feel all right
He's the one they call "Dr. Feelgood"

Cops on the corner always ignore
Somebody's getting paid
Jimmy's got it wired, law's for hire
Got it made in the shade
Got a little hideaway, does business all day
But at night he'll always be found
Sellin' sugar to the sweet
People on the street
Call this Jimmy's town

He's the one they call "Dr. Feelgood"
He's the one that makes ya feel all right
He's the one they call "Dr. Feelgood"
He's gonna be your Frankenstein

I've got one thing you'll understand
(Dr. Feelgood)
He's not what you'd call a glamorous man
(Dr. Feelgood)
Got one thing that's easily understood
(Dr. Feelgood)
He's the one they call "Dr. Feelgood"
Oh yeah

He'll tell you he's the king
Of these barrio streets
Moving up to Shangri-La
Came by his wealth as a matter of luck
Says he never broke no law
Two time loser running out of juice
Time to move out quick
Heard a rumor going 'round
Jimmy's going down
This time it's gonna stick

He's the one they call "Dr. Feelgood"
He's the one that makes ya feel all right
He's the one they call "Dr. Feelgood"
He's gonna be your Frankenstein

Let him soothe your soul, just take his hand
(Dr. Feelgood)
Some people call him an evil man
(Dr. Feelgood)
Let him introduce himself real good
(Dr. Feelgood)
He's the only one they call "Feelgood"
Guitar!

Listen to Jimmy
Come play with Dr. Feelgood

I've got one thing you'll understand
(Dr. Feelgood)
He's not what you'd call a glamorous man
(Dr. Feelgood)
Got one thing that's easily understood
(Dr. Feelgood)
He's the one they call "Dr. Feelgood"

Oh yeah
Dr. Feelgood (Dr. Feelgood)
Dr. Feelgood (Dr. Feelgood)
Dr. Feelgood (Dr. Feelgood)
Dr. Feelgood (Dr. Feelgood)
Feelgood, Feelgood, Feelgood, Feelgood
