Most of the Millenials I know have even already the scary 50 approaching from behind.

But that's some kind of observation bias, as I am GenX and interestingly know almost no people born between 1990 and 2000.

But I know a bunch of GenZ again who currently look like deer with big, wide open eyes at the approaching headlights of the "30" truck, which imho is much worse than the 40...

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hell no. 30 was just the "oh I'm a real adult now" realisation. 40 is middle age.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah 30s were like "oh I've got people that depend on me now so I can't just fuck off and do whatever I want all day."

40s are like "Oh shit, why does this hurt? It's permanent?!"

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Most people you know are not "millennials", 1976 is not even close to a millennial birthdate lmfao

At some point, every person born in the 20th century while be classified as a millennial.

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 weeks ago

Most people you know are not “millennials”

Where did I say that?

I only stated that the Millennials I know are of the pre-1990 type, and these totally exist.
(Hello, my beloved Millennial-wife, if you happen to read this! :-) )

As Gen-X, I can confirm that 30 is far more traumatic than 40.

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

As Gen-X, I can confirm that 30 is far more traumatic than 40.

I totally agree.

When turning 40, I had much to much going on (family stuff really taking up speed, buying own flat,...) that I didn't give a shit.

30 on the other hand, with me still without a long-term partnership and just continuing living my old student bachelor's life, felt like a huge thing, triggering profound eleventh-hour-panic.

I think that the dates have shifted as typical family foundation has moved from the late teens or early twenties to around 30.
This also means that 50 might be the new 40 (A fact that I can confirm by now), marking a new phase in life as 40 maybe did in former times.

40? The oldest millenials are turning 45 this year.

Already there, would not recommend. The only prize is unending joint pain.

Everyone saying this is too late. We are Xennials not Millenials.

40 has already caught me, but its OK because I still kick ass.

[–] LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Gen x'er here, weren't y'all like starting things in 1981....wouldn't that make you comingup on a different decade? (I'll take my rotten tomatoes now, high velocity please)

[–] Cracks_InTheWalls@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

My father referred to me as 'almost 40' the other day, which I deemed rude so I called him 'almost 60', which he also deemed rude.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

My parents started referring to me as "middle-aged" when I was like 35 specifically because they knew it would drive me nuts. And with the current trajectory of American life expectancy, the math might actually bear them out.

As a millienal rapidly approaching 40 and with my first kid on the way..this image speaks to me.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Congrats on the first kid! I have young kids and recommend getting some cardio in now for more energy. It's been helping me.

Forty was fine. I didn't feel old at all and was in a decent place mentally. I'm now 49, and I have a feeling 50 is going to be somewhat jarring. It just feels undeniably mature.

Meanwhile, retirement age is speeding away into the distance...

[–] agingelderly@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

There was never any hope to retire

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

40 Millennials chasing you down the street would be pretty scary.

I remember when I felt invincible, like the world is my oyster. It felt like yesterday. Even though I didn't achieve everything that I hoped, I'm glad I was raised to just enjoy the journey.

Reminder that your generation contains all the best and worst of humanity, like other generations, and is not a like collective.

[–] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Millennials typically are defined as being born between 1981 and 1996.

Like it or not, 1981 was 45 years ago. Modern Times (1936) is nearer in time to The Empire Strikes Back (1980) than The Empire Strikes back is to 2026.

Leading up to my recent 40th, I went on a little tour of contacting people to tie up loose ends/seek closure where it was lacking. It was really helpful, even though at least one person worried I was planning to kill myself.

I'm gen Z and I'm less than two years from thirty. The years do keep coming, and they do not stop.
