Privatization does not improve these types of services.

When has privatization ever cut costs in the long run?

Here we fucking go. We are now fully in the hands of a trickle down asshole who is going to sell our public goods based on the lie that the private sector is fundamentally more efficient. And the worst part is better than half the Liberal voters will clap like seals as long as the guy doing Reaganomics is wearing their jersey.

However, a senior government official, not authorized to speak publicly, confirmed that the potential sale of federal assets like airports is a way of financing the new wealth fund, a point that Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, in an interview with CBC after tabling the spring update, confirmed.

Oh my god. So our "sovereign wealth fund" which is definitely named to steal a bit of the shine off the wildly successful Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, is actually the exact opposite of that fund. Where the Norwegian model used profits from nationalized industry to create an investment fund it could put towards the national interest, we are creating a fund where we sell off public assets to create a pool of money we can shovel into private interests.

I hate what Carney is doing tbh. I lean a lot further left than liberals do but voted liberal out of complete fear for my safety. It was my first time voting tbf

He's still better than ppsmol, and the NDP have a lot of reorganizing to do and have no chance of forming a government and that's just the sad reality. I'm disappointed in Carney, this isn't what they ran on and he has no mandate as far as i'm concerned. They are taking advantage of the peril we are in with Trump, every disaster is an opportunity with these guys.

What Canadian is asking for this? Anybody? Wow... Gross.

[–] FreeBooteR69@lemmy.ca 32 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I don't like this at all. I've supported what Carney has been doing up this this point, but not on this. Enough people need to sound of against this and get him to back off.

You supported him making the Air Canada attendants’ strike illegal in an attempt to ignore their right to organize and to help the company continue to exploit them? You supported the firing of 40,000+ federal workers in a time of an already high unemployment rate and a weak economy? You supported them getting rid of the need for environmental reviews related to natural resource extraction so that O&G companies could take our stuff and maybe face a weak punishment in the future? Did you also support when Trump first attacked Iran and within hours he said “Canada will unconditionally support the US”? How about how he still won’t call the genocide in Gaza what it is?

Look, I’m glad something has caught your attention but are you fucking serious? Welcome aboard, I guess, just please pay better attention in the future.

I feel the same. If they didn't sell the 407, then it would have been free pretty soon, and would have generated tremendous income. These sales are always short-sighted and never benefit Canadians in the long run.

At least you have the ability to sound off and voice displeasure and disagreement.

The problem with doing nothing and letting the worst in for some idiotic sense of sel-integrity, is that the worst will respond to that criticism with violence.

As America is demonstrating actively.

Pizza Pizza Pearson International Airport.

[–] piskertariot@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Calgary airport is a master class in fucking this up. They removed the seating from the gates and waited more than a year to install water-fountains, hoping people would buy drinks and spend their time shopping.

Fuck everything about that wow.

BC ferries is a disaster now too.

[–] 3janeTA@beige.party 25 points 1 week ago

@grte when has privatizing cut costs sigh

[–] yannic@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 week ago

I thought they were already privatized what with the "Airport Improvement Fee," "Airport landing fee," and "Air traveller security charge" that our local grass airstrip doesn't have.

The thought of privatization makes me suspect what is already bad may out to be worse for consumers. Privatization only works where there is competition. I don't see much competition at Fort McMurray International Airport, nor Abbotsford International Airport, among many others. .

Privative air and personal motor vehicles; nationalize rail, transit, and micromobility.

I'd be ok with that compromise tbh
