They should ask ChatGPT for tips on tax fraud.

β€œYou’re really taking initiative here! Let’s consider how to invest those funds instead into vans full of fertilizer and punch up a manifesto!”

Not if they don't know.

According to NZXT's advertising partners, all your parents need to do is to win a Fortnite tournament, then they can afford it, easy.

Unfortunately it's too late to create a small business during the fiscal year and report meals, "supplies", and standard mileage deduction (for traveling between work locations wink wink), and the cost of hiring a tax specialist (perhaps somebody very very close to them wink wink) which would have been a foolproof plan because the IRS won't audit anybody unless they: 1) can make more back than they spend on the audit and 2) have enough staff with which to perform the audit.

They should increase their withholding by about $150/month.

They'd be happier if I stole 6 dollars from their bank every day and gave them a $2000 Red Envelope on Lunar News Years lmfao.

Are they able to itemize and take a larger deduction due to the increase in SALT limits? And all of the information entered is correct, and the amount owed matched what, e.g. a calculator like Smart Asset says?

Err, I mean, have they tried claiming that you are 7 people, your sister is a clergymen, and your brother was wounded in Vietnam?

Have they considered flying to Virginia, finding the IRS HQ, robbing 1,870 different IRS agents of $1 each, and then paying the fine?

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 months ago (2 children)

flying

IN THIS ECONOMY?

Roadtrip it is!

(Or they can be very frugal and walk there in 3 days... but that's after April 15 and then the Taxman is big mad...

Biking maybe? xD)

Amtrak actually looks pretty reasonable

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Amtrak is not bad at all for short trips. For a longer journey, forget about it. Try looking at travel from Boston to anywhere south of DC.

Yeah, I know, I live in Boston. The NE corridor subsidizes literally the entirety of the rest of the Amtrak network that isn't profitable.

Eh, I think driving is still cheaper...

According to google: 150 miles (approximate distance) for a Toyota Rav 4 is approximately $20 in gas one way... $40 both ways... saving $14 xD

(wear and tear blah blah its not immediate so as far as their frugal brains go, its cheaper...

Oh yea... they'll probably need to go together... so two tickets would be over $100

Lesson Learned: Travel by driving is cheaper if you have more than 1 person)

Pay it in pennies
