In Communist China, this women would have been afforded a pension, full health benefits, and housing five years earlier.

Which, I have heard, is also horrible

Yeah they definitely upped that policy from one of the worst on the plant ages ago in (checks notes)... 2025 πŸ™„

Just tankie shit πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I'm not sure people who want to shit on China will trust a gov.cn website, regardless of the content

[–] QinShiHuangsShlong@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago

I don't expect them to. Even if I provided a link from whatever their approved list of sources happens to be I doubt I'd get real engagement anyway. It's mostly for interested third parties.

people who want to shit on China

Won't believe anything that doesn't shit on China.

[–] CommanderCloon@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I don't know, I think it's good to somewhat push people to confront their contradictions, and they won't if they think the claim cannot be trusted. If the claim is made by some lib source they trust though? At least they would have to confront the facts and couldn't dismiss them outright.

That is if they're discussing (or just reading) in good faith

I think it's important in public spaces especially, where the person you're discussing with is not the only one reading the messages & people of varying political stances are around. In that context, a NYT article that is pro-china (could happen in some instances I'm sure, lol) will be far more impactful than an official statement from the PRC

tankie shit

Is when you have a 55 year retirement age instead of a 50 year retirement age?

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 0 points 5 months ago

This woman. These women.

[–] BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (4 children)

In communist China under Mao, there would be a good chance she starved to death.

Itd be a horror story because whoever ran that story is ending up in a gulag.

[–] orc_princess@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago

You aren't just wrong but also missing the point entirely

I never understood authoritarian leftist policies until recently. Now, I definitely still have my criticism of their implementations and conditions. But, man, the actual purpose of them make a lot of sense.

Like, what are we supposed to do when a massive part of the population is currently cheering on "bombed them to the stone age" and "destroy their entire civilization".

Like, we gotta do something about that at some point. We just let absolute genocidal freaks poison our society forever? At some point you gotta do some reeducation. I'm open to other ideas on what to do. But I definitely understand the purpose better now.

Seems like someone like you might not fit the criteria. Maybe you are just enrolled in some weekend classes or something.

[–] Brummbaer@pawb.social 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That's the problem with these structures once they are created you hand them over to anyone who is able to use them.

I understand why these policies were implemented, in any serious communist government that wants to stay communist, but if the wrong people from inside or outside get to it, many people will suffer.

NB. I'm an anarchist, so I support Marxist revolutions and the get killed by said revolutions ...

[–] m532@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago (2 children)

This implies that you got killed more than once. How did you survive that?

[–] Brummbaer@pawb.social 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You are right! I have been defeated by reason and logic.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

Ugh, that's the worst! My condolences

If a massive part of your population wants to go to war then you're in a pretty bad spot and there isnt much that can prevent that authoritarian or not. At that point you've failed to convince them there is a better path.

The problem I have with Authoritarians is they always think the guy they're putting in power isnt going to do anything bad but once he gets power there is nothing stopping them. If you're lucky the first guy might be good but it will get more and more rotten as the generations go on. Because there is little stopping them from implementing their policy they tend to over correct for any outcome and just end up fucking things up.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Sorry, I thought it was obvious I was talking about a post revolution society. Basically, the Parenti line of "After the revolution the liberals always ask 'Will there be freedom for the fascist?! Can they have their newspapers!?'"

I understand the authoritarian leftist policies that are needed in that stage of development.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Post revolution and pre revolution are the exact same world with the same people. A revolution isnt a magical moment where humans change and pressures disappear.

You'll never get to a point where the authoritarian policies are removed. If you're very very lucky things material conditions will improve and the living under the authoritarian regime will be tolerable until materials conditions to a point where people start wanting more than just food on the table and a roof over their head. But after that people run into the problem where they have no influence on their future or ability to pursue things outside the norm.

If material conditions get worse then life is miserable and nothing you can do until it gets so bad people violently revolt and do it all again.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

It's so weird people say this when historically leftist states do actually end authoritarian policies. Like, the gulags were literally closed. Not to mention countless examples of China ending once needed and now no longer needed policies.

I think Anarchist live in a fantasy world sometimes and just like saying "the state never gives up power". It's like you guys try to apply the same theory to a bourgeoise run state and a proletariat run state under a communist party. History literally shows you they are massively different.

Can you maybe offer constructive criticism on how to improve them instead of just blindly acting like state power is some universal evil. After awhile it really just starts to sound like religious dogma. Like the state is some underworld character that you have to defeat.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 0 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Before i waste my time answering, do you actually think china is dialing back authoritarian policy? Theyve built the most dystopian surveillance network in the world and they STILL arrest people for free expression.

[–] QinShiHuangsShlong@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You really don't understand China lmao

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

But they have cameras! Cameras!

[–] QinShiHuangsShlong@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Traffic cameras are so dystopian, just ignore the 95+% government approval rate (according to harvard not the CPC), the whole process peoples democracy, the poverty alleviation, the corruption crackdowns. More cameras clearly means more dystopia.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 0 points 5 months ago (2 children)

There is no way you believe this. This is baiting

[–] QinShiHuangsShlong@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Believe what? A Harvard study and my own experience being born and raised here? Ah well I suppose we're just subhuman "authoritarians" in your eyes for being proud of all that our government has done for us and seeing it listen and react to our demands.

people like you are the reason gulags will be necessary

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 0 points 5 months ago (5 children)

Well luckily i live in a civilized liberal democratic society and not a subhuman authoritarian shithole like you wish for.

[–] QinShiHuangsShlong@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Thank you for that input Adolf. Tell us more about how much you hate all the subhumans who don't subscribe to your liberal fairytale interpretation of reality.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 0 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Its reality, liberal countries exist and they are great places to live. But look if you want to live your life under a boot who am i to stop you.

[–] QinShiHuangsShlong@lemmy.ml 0 points 5 months ago

Yes Adolf we get it you think we're all subhuman, that our experiences and views are entirely irrelevant and we just don't know better and you the liberal Ubermensch know what's best for us, to civilise us savages to your so amazing ways.

Those are crazy distances! Super impressive to be able to do that (ignoring why it might be necessary)

[–] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'm not sure it makes sense, thats like 6 hours of walking one way. Maybe she's speed walking but still how fast could she go?

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'll bet it's a story of "well my car broke down and my job doesn't pay enough to get it fixed, so it was either walk or get fired (and thus lose health insurance and the pay that's keeping a roof over my head)." Seen it enough in my lifetime - a coworker used to walk 4 miles down the highway to his workplace for the same reason.

[–] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 0 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I'm saying I don't think its feasible whether she would put up with it or not.

If she's walking 12 hours a day for an 8 hour shift, she has 4 hours to sleep and eat? I think someone's exaggerating here or something. I'm leaning towards the story is fake, but I haven't really tried to verify it.

[–] DerisionConsulting@lemmy.ca 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It looks like she only walked home from work, and didn't need to walk both ways. I can't confirm if she was getting full-time hours at work. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/11/04/gofundme-fedex-worker-darlene-quinn-12-mile-walk/4154337002/

She is likely taking about 4 hours to walk each way.
I had to walk 18km to and from work for a while, but I was (likely) in better shape than her, so the 18 km took me three hours.

I live in a neighborhood where this is daily life for most people. But privilege won't believe it unless it happens to themselves.

[–] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 0 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Well go ahead and educate someone who is apparently too privileged.

Walks through what? Nuclear fallout? She looks 90.

[–] protogen420@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 5 months ago

not too far from modern suburbia

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

Probably because she’s got to walk 12-24 miles (unclear if 12mi one way or round trip) and also work six days a week and probably has for many years. That takes a toll on the body, not to mention she’s probably missing out on fully homemade meals because she’s got no time to cook, so she’s ingesting more salt and sugar and microplastics (the added fat is probably balanced out by the walking, but the rest isn’t necessarily) as well as spending more time in the sun, wind, and exposed to exhaust particles and other traffic pollution than most people her age.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 0 points 5 months ago

You'd look that way too, sun/weather exposure, perhaps tooth/gum loss for no access to medical care, especially dental. Perhaps lived a lifetime of trauma, as a kid, then a wife.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 0 points 5 months ago (5 children)

Uphill both ways? With a hot potato in her pocket to keep her warm and eat for lunch? Yeah, my grandpa told me that story.
