This could have been just a Photoshop, but he chose camera tricks and Photoshop. What a goddamned legend.

There appears to be some compositing going on to my eye; I'm not sure what kinda lens will focus equally well on two subjects with that much distance between them.

tldr I can tell by the pixels

No lens can do that. It's usually done by overlaying several pictures with different foci. I think that's what's called HDR

I was under the impression that the second photo was him fixing the chip on a transparent plate, so he can place it closer to the camera.

But as ebolapie pointed out, the lens he used is most likely only able to focus one distance. So the chip would be much more out of focus if he didn't use image manipulation to layer two photos.
