Looks like the swing to ONP from the Liberal party is truly on, the real question I have: is this more than the same rural/city divide? just orange instead of blue/nat?

  • Tonight at 6pm, Stop the War on Palestine (SWOP) are hosting a public forum - "Why it's right to say 'Globalise the Intifada'". Speakers include Cumberland City councillor Ahmed Ouf, writer and lawyer Sara Saleh, plus Ed Carroll via video link (the Jewish activist and Queensland Progressive Party leader arrested for using the banned slogan)
  • There has been direct mentions of this event in mainstream media, particularly News Corp outlets, due to NSW Premier Chris Minns urging the City of Sydney to block the event. I also see some reactionary social media posters trying to stir the pot.
  • Because of this, I've heard concerns that there's an possible chance of counterprotest, and therefore it's important to ensure numbers at the even to dissuade any potential counterprotesters from starting problems.

Please share this around, and I hope to see you there!

In short:

Any larger-than-expected tax take driven by the Iran war will be entirely used to pay down Commonwealth debt.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers is managing expectations of major cost-of-living relief in the federal budget, saying the government will save more than it spends when the budget is handed down.

What's next?

The federal budget will be delivered on May 12.

This morning I was listening to Jane Caro talk about how our public education has been gutted. She has published a book Rich Kid Poor Kid about it. She's touring the East Coast to talk about her findings and what we need to do to stop the rot which is creating more class division and a system which is more expensive than in ay OECD country (even public ed.)

If you live in Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne you may be interested in checking out what she has to say.

Mods, If this is seen as an ad, let me know so I can change the wording . I do think it's a very important topic.

This is the email I received 2 hrs ago but only just seen. Please, if you can, share this with others, tune in tonight and call our government out on Monday. If our govt won't stand up for Palestinians it should stand up for Australians. (Bolding in the text is mine)

Six Australian humanitarian volunteers have just been released this morning in Crete after being held on an Israeli prison ship for two days.

But instead of relief, we were horrified.

Three of our crew, Ethan, Zack and Neve have been beaten and tortured so much they had to be taken to hospital immediately, while the other three, Bianca, Surya and Cameron also reported violence while held hostage including being "kneed in the face".

2 leaders of the flotilla movement, Saif from Spain and Thiago from Brazil, are being kidnapped to Israeli prison. This is the same barbarity we have witnessed from Israel not just over the past 2 and a half years of genocide but over the last 80 years of occupation, dispossession and colonial violence in Palestine.

To our MPs who have not spoken up against a genocide for which Australia is actively providing financial, political and logistical support; who did not speak up when Australian citizens were taken hostage at gunpoint on Thursday; who are not speaking up now when they are beaten and tortured at the hands of a foreign military:

Where is your red line?

In response to the horrific violence and silence from our politicians, the Australian delegation of Global Sumud Flotilla are calling a National Day of Action on Monday May 4th for Sumud and Gaza to demand that the Australian Government and our politicians:

  1. Issue immediate and public condemnation of Israel for illegally kidnapping and torturing Australian citizens;
  1. Put an end to Australia’s complicity in the genocide in Palestine, and to support all efforts to deliver life-saving aid to Gaza; and
  1. Call for the immediate release of Thiago and Saif.

The silence from our politicians and the Australian government is deafening. It is the bare minimum expectation that our representatives and governments speak up for their constituents and citizens when a foreign state illegally detains and beats them, in international waters. It is not a crime to sail in the mediterranean sea. It is not a crime to attempt to bring aid to starving people.

Blocking aid is. Taking people hostage is. Committing a genocide is. Let Palestinians live, let aid flow, Australia out of Palestine.

Join us tonight at 6pm AEST/5:30pm ACST/4pm AWST to hear latest updates, get tips on organising your action and start planning.

Subhi for the Australian Delegation of Global Sumud Flotilla

Instead of competing with One Nation, the Liberal party under Angus Taylor is echoing One Nation’s divisive, hateful position on immigration and in Farrer is preferencing One Nation – a move that could put a One Nation MP in the House of Representatives for the first time.

Liberals in Farrer should ignore Taylor’s how-to-vote card and put One Nation last.

The Labor MP Ed Husic vowed to keep pushing for a 25% export levy, predicting the groundswell of public support would eventually be too hard for Albanese to ignore.

Husic challenged Albanese’s description of the gas tax campaign as “populist”, noting the same label was used to described Labor’s drive for a royal commission into the banks.

I am glad someone from Labor is sticking up for the levy. Over time, keeping in mind the international situation, the levy should continue to be kept front of mind for when some semblance of 'normality' returns.
