Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Why would anyone want this?

Because many people keep posting pictures, putting their real name and sharing personal info on facebook ("I'm a married male that works in Architecture. I studied at Michigan University and live in Ann Arbor"). This shit basically makes Zuck richer because he can sell more accurate data to companies.

Because many dumb US States are kissing his ass to get data centers that will use water, electricity, generate pollution and create little to/no jobs. Dumb politicians think they are getting a great deal.

This is the guy who wrote 'they trust me. Dumb fucks' in an email.

Remember that time everyone was posting their 10 year transformations? Hello aging algorithm.

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

Zuck is at the point where he needs to invent new things to want.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 7 points 9 months ago

To stay relevant and also to get funding.

Datacenters with parallel compute cards? I expect they want to perform parallelized computation.

Everyone:

please stop.

Soon they will realize they simply have to much money to spend constructively and will start sharing with the rest of us. Any day now.

[–] Grumpyleb@lemmus.org 9 points 9 months ago

Nah, they'll tell you to reduce your electricity consumption and carbon footprint while they fly their jets and power their AI centers.

I can't stop thinking about this piece from Gary Marcus I read a few days ago, How o3 and Grok 4 Accidentally Vindicated Neurosymbolic AI. It's a fascinating read on the differences of connectionist vs. symbolic AI and the merging of the two into neurosymbolic AI from someone who understands the topic.

I recommend giving the whole thing a read, but this little nugget at the end is what caught my attention,

Why was the industry so quick to rally around a connectionist-only approach and shut out naysayers? Why were the top companies in the space seemingly shy about their recent neurosymbolic successes?

Nobody knows for sure. But it may well be as simple as money. The message that we can simply scale our way to AGI is incredibly attractive to investors because it puts money as the central (and sufficient) force needed to advance.

AGI is still rather poorly defined, and taking cues from Ed Zitron (another favorite of mine), there will be a moving of goalposts. Scaling fast and hard to several gigglefucks of power and claiming you've achieved AGI is the next big maneuver. All of this largely just to treat AI as a blackhole for accountability; the super smart computer said we had to take your healthcare.

[–] TechAnon@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

That was an interesting substack article. I'm not super deep into the AI stuff and never heard of Gary Marcus. I agree that they went to scaling LLMs first because 1 - it's easier to scale vs tie in new ways of doing things and 2 - companies like Nvidia were in line to make a ton of money as crypto mining started to fall out of favor and real-time ray tracing wasn't giving them as big of advantage as they hoped.

They are still making a ton of dough!

[–] CeeBee_Eh@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

AGI

For a minute there I read that as "AG1" and thought "man, are we getting those ads in Lemmy comments now"?

[–] lemmylump@lemmy.world 27 points 9 months ago (2 children)

People used to make fun of me cause I made up a fake persona for Facebook, never allowed tagging, never allowed my picture on it.

Nobody, makes fun of me for this anymore.

Most of them are off Facebook as of last year, but their profiles, personal data are all still there.

As someone who has been in IT since 1994, I have a nearly zero presence on the internet, and I've had to work hard to keep it that way.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 15 points 9 months ago

The goal is to train our replacements so the rich will have replacement servants ready when their slaves start dying off.

[–] vala@lemmy.world 13 points 9 months ago

Fucking stop lmao

[–] toe@lemmy.world 13 points 9 months ago
[–] Greyghoster@aussie.zone 11 points 9 months ago (1 children)

And who will pay for this absurdity? Someone has to provide the power, the water, the air quality, the land degradation etc. This is all for pursuing a dead end technology that actually isn’t intelligent and given how it works, won’t be. A waste of effort to shore up share prices.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Remember that donation he made to a certain inaugural fund? That means the people will.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 9 months ago

Why not build vertically instead?

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 10 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Still pushing those silly ray ban spy glasses I see.

[–] StowawayFog@piefed.social 9 points 9 months ago

Can you imagine talking to someone with two cameras pointing at you, at all times? Fucking annoying. I’d punch them.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 3 points 9 months ago

The only person I have seen use them was a like 6 year old girl at a restaurant who was running around from table to table, running up to people and saying "ok meta, who/what is this?"
Then squealing at the answer while ignoring all people asking her to stop.

I hated that kid and I really hated those glasses.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 9 months ago

google tried that already like 10years ago, it was so silly on someone.

[–] womjunru@lemmy.cafe 10 points 9 months ago

And meanwhile people are starving.

[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Between this and the other NOAA headline, I feel like we'll soon live in the Rainworld universe.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (2 children)
[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 5 points 9 months ago

No, that is also a good game, but I meant rainworld.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 7 points 9 months ago

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

Just… no.

[–] CobraChicken3000@lemmy.ca 7 points 9 months ago

[–] Flocklesscrow@lemmy.zip 6 points 9 months ago

This guy is single-handedly reversing the trajectory of nerd bullying.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 3 points 9 months ago

Why don’t people block all Meta properties at the network level via IP addresses and/or DNS? Where do you think the funds to pay for this come from?

[–] ABetterTomorrow@sh.itjust.works 3 points 9 months ago

ITOps is going to wonder around drunk and piss on a rack.

[–] womjunru@lemmy.cafe 2 points 9 months ago

So, remember matrix 3?
