I thought Missouri loves company.

[–] flying_sheep@lemmy.ml 9 points 17 hours ago

Yeah but the potential company doesn't like it back.

When your largest city is called the neighbouring state and your name is literally misery

[–] Boe@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (7 children)

TBF, Kansas city was named first by 4 years. Also, for the most part, Kansas isn’t really any better than Missouri

They should declare an armed war of secession...not from the United States...but from Missouri! Let them become the free cities of the prairies, the free cities of Kansas City and St. Louis...two new city-states on the planes!

For legal purposes, this is not an endorsement of acts of literal treason.

Major cities pop up around interesting geographical boundaries (like rivers) and that's also where the state lines were drawn, I'm guessing. It's why NYC is trying to get into NJ as well.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pshh... too much thought put into a meme

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

I won't let your grumpiness get in the way of my info dumping. Move along you sour blob of text.

[–] thru_dangers_untold@lemmy.world 13 points 23 hours ago

Yep. Kansas City and St. Louis are both located at the confluence of 2 rivers. KC is at the Kansas-Missouri confluence, and St. Louis at the Missouri-Mississippi

I visited St Louis for the first time recently, and oof. Yeah.

[–] NathanRanch@lemmy.zip 12 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

We made it illegal to be homeless here btw. Not many people know that.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 11 points 18 hours ago

It's clearly a moral failure to not own property.

Next they'll make it illegal to know that.

When one of your biggest cities is named after a different state

[–] chickenf622@sh.itjust.works 29 points 23 hours ago

Kansas City existed before Kansas

Also, Nebraska. Omaha is right on the Eastern border. The only other towns are along the interstate, spaced about a tank of gas apart.

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

Because major cities sprung up along rivers. And they split states up along rivers.

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Almost like rivers are a major economic driver or something….

It's a shame too, beautiful state, people ruin it

[–] XiJinpingStanAccount@lemmy.ml 9 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

That is like the entire United States honestly. The land is perfect. Geography is amazing. But the people are just horrible.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 6 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

There's good ones, but current events seem to be revealing that there are far fewer of them than I had thought.

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

There are a few very lucky small towns which are pockets of leftists in the middle of gorgeous American nature. You just have to really look for them.

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 5 points 18 hours ago

Beautiful mountains and plains, gorgeous unspoiled rivers, four varied and enjoyable seasons, and some of the dumbest motherfuckers you'll ever meet.

[–] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 7 points 18 hours ago

As a Missourian, yeah I can't blame them. I want out too

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 32 points 1 day ago (5 children)

St. Louis essentially is another state. I love going to the publicly-funded zoo.

Yet my proposal to St. Louis City Council to open a publicly funded human zoo keeps getting rejected year after year!

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 14 points 23 hours ago

As an Illinoisian, I love your free zoo too.

I guess Joplin or Branson would be the only other options, but I haven’t lived there in years.

KCMO does not want to be in another state, because it is far, far superior - and older than its Kansas counterpart, which oddly enough is named after it.

That’s right.

Kansas City, KS is named after Kansas City, MO

[–] thru_dangers_untold@lemmy.world 17 points 23 hours ago

Yep. The Kansas River was originally named after the native Kansa (or Kaw) tribe. Then the city was named after the river. Then a while later, the state was also named after the river and the other city was named after the first city. Clear as the muddy river.

Wait, so Kansas City's brilliant idea is to join fucking KANSAS!? Like...from the Dorothy tornado? Careful what you wish for, Kansas Citites.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 11 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Got halfway out of Kansas into Missouri and realized it wasn’t any better. Resigned themselves to being stuck.

[–] Lexam@lemmy.world 7 points 20 hours ago

Other way around. Kansas City, MO existed before Kansas City, KS.
