Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

No one knows how big a pumpkin can get.

It takes a greenhouse full of vines feeding one pumpkin to grow this big.

The heaviest pumpkin weighed 1,431.5 kg (3,156 lb) and was grown by Ron Wallace (USA) as verified at the Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off at Frerichs Farm in Warren, Rhode Island, USA, on 10 October 2026, by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth.

Interesting, I read that most giant pumpkins come from places like Alaska as they like to take advantage of the longer days in the summer.

Gourd is just short for “Good Lord!”

They should carve it out so someone can live in it.

Shout out to the Let's Learn Everything podcast for covering this recently

What determines how much stem they can leave on?

[–] ISolox@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Still lighter than your mother.

Damn you global warming!

Wow and that looks like it's only half of it!

I wonder what becomes of it afterwards.

If memory serves they either go home with the entrant, or get donated to be used as animal feed. They arent very good pumpkins for, like, human pumpkin stuff. You could carve them I guess, but they aren’t good eating pumpkins.

I’ve been on the internet long enough to know not to rule out any ….uses… for anything.

I did mean eating, carving, and using for crafts/decoration, though. For stuff like that, they aren’t much good. You can make some of them into very temporary boats, though. That’s also human stuff, but they aren’t very good boats, either :)

One of the big pumpkin influencers (I know...) I follow on YouTube shows them turned into boats for a pumpkin boat race, and then drop them onto things with a crane. They are allowed to collect seeds first iirc. Then the scraps are fed to pigs.

They hollow it out and make it into a caravan.

Pumpkin fuckers have their way with it.

And then after it has been thus seasoned, it's time to eat.

[–] realitista@lemmus.org 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

If you ever wondered where the spice in pumpkin spice comes from....

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 6 days ago

More like PUMPIN' spice, amirite?

I’d like to see one of these that grows nice and round. I wonder if you could rig up some kind of growing frame / harness to prevent them from getting flattened by their own weight.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The Japanese do stuff like that with vegetables and fruit, like putting tomatoes in forms to make them square.

I was at the grocery store the other day and they had these pumpkins that were grown into a mold of a face on one side. Looked like an old man trying to escape from inside. If they weren't $40 I would have definitely bought one

[–] RogueBanana@piefed.zip 4 points 1 week ago (3 children)

You won't be able to weigh one with the harness and its sudden removal could lead to a real tragedy.

its sudden removal could lead to a real tragedy.

That's true of SO many things!

[–] frank@sopuli.xyz 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Could suspend it by the harness to weigh?

[–] RogueBanana@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago

It would be near impossible to prevent cheating when anything other than the pumpkin is involved. Thats what I meant by you cant weigh it.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah I mean really design a mechanism specifically for this. Like slowly lower it as it grows, so that it supports it own weight but without deforming. Maybe lowered into some crater-like hole dug into the ground.

[–] RogueBanana@piefed.zip 1 points 6 days ago

Designing a harness is not that hard but it simply cannot sustain its own weight while forming a perfect shape. Thats like trying to make a water balloon retain a perfect shape. If it was possible, someone would have already done it, trust me.
