Plenty of kids who aren't fat, or are barely even eating, get this kind of treatment, it's gross and abusive.

My nephew on my wife's side was treated this way by my BiL's ex, when they recovered him he was super under weight, while his once pretty and very petite mother was super overweight, sick shit, she had the cabinets and fridge chained up, went to jail, lost custody.

Where the fuck are they hiding it?! It has to be refrigerated. I’m starting to suspect this is fake…

UHT (ultra heat treated / ultra-pasteurized) milk can be stored at room temperature. Tastes a little different but I actually prefer it.

[–] dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Ahh gross room temperature milk

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

At least in the U.S. UHT and ultra-pasteurized are not the same:

Ultra-Pasteurized Milk Ultra-pasteurized milk undergoes a more intense heat treatment, where it is heated to 138°C (280°F) for 2 seconds. This process extends the milk’s shelf life to 30–90 days under refrigeration. Ultra-pasteurized milk is packaged in paper or plastic, with the package being treated with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) to ensure sterility and preserve freshness.

Heat Treatment: 138°C (280°F) for 2 seconds

Shelf Life: 30–90 days

Storage: Requires refrigeration

UHT Milk UHT milk is heated to 138°C (280°F) or higher for at least 2 seconds, making it nearly sterile. This high heat treatment not only kills bacteria but also allows the milk to remain shelf-stable for up to 6+ months without refrigeration, until it is opened. UHT milk is packaged in a hermetically sealed container that is sterilized, ensuring the milk remains fresh and safe to consume.

Heat Treatment: 138°C (280°F) or higher for 2+ seconds

Shelf Life: 6+ months (unopened, no refrigeration needed)

Storage: Shelf-stable, no refrigeration required

different? thats just normal milk, and it still has to be refrigerated after opened

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Normal milk can't be stored without refrigeration for several months, regardless of whether its open or not.

[–] protogen420@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

UHT is the norm where I live

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

What's your point then? Are you not aware that other places can be different than yours?

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (3 children)

TIL that in many countries people don't buy UHT.

That's crazy to me, there's always boxes and boxes of milk in the pantry, no way I could store all that milk in the fridge

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

because it tastes like actual milk that's been filtered through a used diaper.

I can store 2 weeks worth of fresh milk in the fridge. I don't need any more than that as I grocery shop every 7-10days and the little corner shop that's a stones throw from me sells it if I did want more, which has happened twice in 3years.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Whoever is using those diapers probably has diabetes then, because it's making the milk taste sweeter.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Boxed... milk?

I'm honestly not sure if that's worse than bagged milk

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Boxes as in the typical tetrapaks. They're very much like the regular milk cartons I've seen sold in the US, and basically built the same way but have an additional very thin aluminum foil layer in between the cardboard and plastic, to provide a more complete barrier against light and oxygen, and nowadays they even sell them with screw caps and what not.

Either option still seems much better than plastic jugs, to me that just screams liquid laundry detergent or motor oil.

[–] RudeOnTuesdays@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What's wrong with bagged milk?

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 1 points 23 hours ago

What isn't wrong with bagged milk?

[–] tacosanonymous@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don’t drink it bc it’s nasty but it’s always in the cold part of the grocery stores here.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The point of UHT is that it keeps for months at room temperature until open, the only point I can see of selling it refrigerated is because people there expect it.

No idea how it can taste "nasty" to you though, I get that it's a bit different, slightly sweeter, but cold out of the fridge I'm not convinced everyone could tell them apart, let alone if you're pouring it into cereals or for cooking/baking.

[–] jak@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

100% you can tell the difference. I’ve been vegan for several years and I can still smell a difference (I work as a barista, there’s a lot of milk). The first time I had UHT Milk, I thought it was flavored, because it’s significantly sweeter to me. I could never get used to it and found it unpleasant.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

OK, fair. They are different, and it's especially noticeable at room temperature and more so if warm.

I find it much harder to notice the difference if it's cold, and almost impossible if I'm mixing it with tea or coffee or cereals, but some people might just be more sensitive than I am.

[–] tacosanonymous@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sorry, I meant that all milk is nasty. I’ve never liked it. The film it leaves, the aftertaste, it’s all bad to me. So, if there’s a difference between the the things you’re describing, I wouldn’t know it.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Ah that makes sense, I thought you were making a distinction between UTH and HTST - they're different, but for someone who doesn't like milk they're the same thing.

Milk racism

[–] aBundleOfFerrets@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Why? Scared of roach milk?

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Do you fantasize about the roach bars from Snowpiercer?

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

I'm more of a people person to be honest.

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago

I mean, if you crush a whole cow, I'm sure that would taste odd versus the separated parts.

Finding the right tweezers to milk them is quite hard, though

As a kid and teenager I used to drink between one and three litres of full fat milk a day. Sometimes I would just chug a whole 1 litre carton. I was skinny then and am still skinny now. I also don't drink milk anymore.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nobody's asking whose milk they had to hide.
