Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

AAA Games: We've created a massive open world 500x larger than our previous game with a grand total of two (2) sidequests that have been copy-pasted all over the map. That way, you have many different ways to climb a tower to find where to shoot stealth mechanics base building zombies buy the tarnished pass today!

Steam Indie Games: We had the great idea of taking Sekiro's combat system and making into a rhythm game! We then decided to make it a roguelike deckbuilder so we wouldn't have to design a progression system or level layouts and the player can just reset runs until the game becomes good via monkeys and typewriters.

Itch.io Games: I made a 2 hour long game about the trauma of growing up as a closeted trans girl presented via metaphor of being a stowaway on a 25th century cargo ship delivering goods between Hong Kong and The Greater Empire of Americana. It's also a roguelike deckbuilder.

Mobile games: we vibe coded another generic candy crush clone where you have no objective and just touch stuff to make colorful flashy animations and see ads between each level

[–] FearMeAndDecay@literature.cafe 47 points 4 days ago

Don't forget the gambling for big titty anime girls

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Or alternatively: we drew a big cool map and then a dull version of that map we've overlayed on top of it and mechanics that allow you to reveal bits of the good map gated by an exponentially increasing timer tuned to give lots of dopamine early on to get you hooked then it'll encourage you to spend money to skip the wait. And the exponential growth means each purchase of time or resources can look like it will give you everything you'll ever need by being way higher than your current needs but in two levels, the new needs will dwarf even that.

Other alternative: we've made a (great/decent/passable) combat system and you gamble for combatants. You don't have to pay to play, but your odds of winning are correlated with how much you pay us, though we can throw free players a bone to pressure you into spending even more because you see them catching up.

And we use ads that don’t even feature our games gameplay.

[–] StumblingWasabi@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago

Well if we showed real gameplay who would want to play our game?

Holy alt text. You really put a lot of effort in and I can appreciate tthat <3

I miss the era of pixel art platformers with a cliff face for a difficulty progression curve (also 50-50 chance of being a roguelike)

Oh also another current theme of: Vampire Survivors, but with a vaguely different theme

[–] Tower@lemmy.zip 27 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Even Vampire Survivors carcinogenesis'd toward deckbuilder...

[–] PrinzKasper@feddit.org 1 points 3 days ago

They're still making those, for example:

[–] pirc_lover@feddit.uk 3 points 4 days ago (5 children)

Do you have any platformers you go back to regularly?

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

Celeste is a good newer one

N++, Spelunky 2 and Noita for me

A great 3D indie platformer/collectathon that gives Mario Odyssey vibes (open worlds with lots of little platforming sections) is Big Hops

The game has good movement mechanics, cool settings, and decent writing.the use of berries as regional alterations on the platforming is really well done and keeps things fresh between the worlds.

Not the original commenter, but the Gunvolt/Luminous Avenger Ix games are ones I keep going back to. Very Mega-Man inspired with some lite stats and leveling. I especially enjoyed the first Luminous Avenger Ix game, bullet dashing into as many enemies as possible while playing the floor is lava is a lot of fun.

We should make "Greglike" a thing.

Pyanodon is a greglike game

[–] anothercatgirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

yes and there's also

  • Gregtech Lower Dimensions (Terraria mod),
  • TerraFirmaGreg and GTNH (obviously)
  • Voxel Eras

some more come to mind

  • Stationeers
  • many of the complex Factorio expansion modpacks, like Pyanodon's, Angel+Bob, and Nullius
  • crafting-heavy mods for Starbound
  • some Mindustry-based games

just a few more come up:

  • GT6
  • Reika's mods
  • Ultracube
[–] LostListener@piefed.social 2 points 4 days ago

I’ve restarted GTNH like 5 times and always throw in the towel a hundred hours later somewhere around tier 2/LV. Theres like 10 tiers if anyone is curious.

It’s great. It’s just great.

I don't like calling deck builders roguelike, call it deckbuilder with perma death

[–] TheOakTree@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

All the deckbuilders I know aren't even roguelikes, they're roguelites. The meta progression of unlocking new cards/charms/characters is too essential to the longevity of a run-based deckbuilder.

[–] themagzuz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 days ago

i would argue that having any meta-progression isn't really a useful distinction. i think it's much more useful to draw the distinction between meta-progression as a means of tutorialization (unlocking new items or characters, ala slay the spire and balatro) vs meta-progression as a difficulty affordance (like the permanent upgrades of hades)

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 5 points 3 days ago

Magic The Gathering is a roguelike because eventually you get tired of losing and splash out big money on cards.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 34 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (3 children)

It's roguelike deckbuilders all the way down (and I wouldn't have it any other way)

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 19 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I haven't enjoyed many. The only fun one I've found was created by my good pal, Kurt cocaine. (They changed their name)

Roguelike bullet hell, where the deck builder lies between levels, so you can build your weapons

https://skyfire-games.itch.io/td2s

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 11 points 5 days ago

I enjoyed one and that was it. Over ‘em.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 6 points 5 days ago

Thanks for the recommendation this looks fire ❤️

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I hate games like that where how much fun you have is RNG. Last one I tried before I gave up on the genre was Ball X Pit. I had a build in mind, but none of the items I needed dropped even with spamming rerolls. I eventually got to the boss and died because my build is hodgepodge desperation garbage.

If I wanted lose half the time, I'd play poker. Maybe it's more fun if you have loads of time to spend on failed runs? But if you can only play one run per day and it just sucks, like, what are we doing here?

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It's more about making due with what you are given and finding fun strategies within that than trying to get specific decks. If the deck-builder roguelike isn't able to do that then it isn't a good deck-builder roguelike. Being able to influence what you get, and using that efficiently is also very important.

[–] Kowowow@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

I don't want a deck, give me boi head bashing till I get a god run

[–] Stolas@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I gave the comments a quick scan so I might have missed it, but what would be the Itch.io game in question, if anyone knows?

[–] katze@lemmy.4d2.org 1 points 3 days ago

I don't know either, but you can browse the games via the LGBT tag: https://itch.io/games/tag-lgbt

[–] Gigdragon@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Now all of China knows you are here.

.....I'll keep an eye out.

[–] Flukeyfox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

If anyone wants a good itch.io game recommendation that isn't a deck builder or rogue-lite/like, "Voices of the Void" is an really good one :p

[–] Fiery@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago

On the other side, vault of the void is a really good deck builder

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

oh that looks pretty cool, thank u for the rec! :3

[–] Flukeyfox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 days ago

Np!! I've not finished all that's in it yet but it's been fun so far :3 a lot of interesting things that can randomly happen I've been playing and enjoying a lot more indie games the last few years and a lot less AAA.

Has been way more enjoyable!

I really hate how accurate this is. It's even worse because I can't get enough of the roughelikes even though they have lately been leaving me with a large amount of disappointment.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

i can't ever find any good rougelike deckbuilders on itch :(

[–] FrederikNJS@piefed.zip 10 points 4 days ago

Who said anything about "good"?

[–] magic_smoke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Where does the best shooter of all time, 'The Conduit' for the Nintendo Wii by High Voltage Software, fit into this?
