Because of course there’s going to be ads. The enshittification of all things continues.

I'm ready! I installed CoMaps.

If you're an Apple Maps user looking for an alternative, there's a number of apps that display the OpenStreetMap data, which is a free and open map (which you can contribute to, it's kind of like wikipedia for maps). I use one called Organic Maps, but there are others as well.

Yeah not sure what’s the best option and was considering making a post to ask. I’ve looked at these in the past but don’t know enough about each project.

Organic Maps

OsmAnd

CoMaps

CoMaps is the newest one, and I've heard good things from my map-knowing friends, so that's where I'd start. Switching over from OrganicMaps has been on my todo list for a while.

I tried using a couple different apps that use OSM, but when adding and revising info on the maps someone reviewing the info i am submitting is being an ass and denying all of my changes.

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is so frustrating because OSM should be more accurate and up-to-date because anyone can edit it, not just Apple employees, except we're hurting for contributors, and petty tyrants like that dillweed who keeps blocking your edits mean we lose even those we do have. Ugh I hate it and I'm sorry that's your experience.

They even denied edits regarding my own business, like they know stuff about my business better than the owner does. I was really excited to be using something other than apple/Google maps, but their behavior sent me back to apple.

gulf of america much? yeah, fuck off.

I kinda figure most of these price hikes exist to subsidize the hardware side of things. There isn't too much longer they can go without raising the prices on their hardware. I actually bought the base model of their newer models (never bought an iphone before) because I figure this to be one of the last windows to get that much phone at a semi-decent price.

There’s a lot of money to be made in advertising dollars. I’d rather pay more for a product than be marketed towards.

[–] somebody_to_love@lemmy.today 0 points 1 month ago

I agree. Also, since Apple services keep being (even if only so slightly) worse than their Google/Microsoft counterparts, including ads totally removes their competitive advantage. What’s the point of using a worse product that’s also enshittified?

I’m not a hater, I am writing this from my iPhone on a full Apple ecosystem. But if Apple chooses to follow the Google route then their products will have no appeal to me.

I know it’s all about money, but I don’t get it. I really thought they were smarter than that.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Not to mention, if I can pay extra at the beginning, the profit is made and the transaction is done. Once ads show up, that’s for the life of the device. I’d much rather pay a bit more at the start than pay with my attention in installments over the course of years.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago

They did raise their hardware prices

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago

Once this ads genie is out of the bottle, Apple is on the road to making their experience as shitty as Google does. I hate this so much.

Greedy greedy greedy.

They should, at least, not show ads for Apple One subscribers. This pisses me off.

Ads in the App Store don’t bother me. Purchasing things is part of it and I rarely use it. But, ads in utilities that I use every day is too far. If they put ads like these in Music, Safari, Mail, etc., they’ll definitely lose even some die-hard Apple users.

If the os goes the way of windows and android I will suck up it up and switch my laptop and phone to Linux and graphene. It’s nice having one of my computers be able to access proprietary software I might use but I refuse to be socially engineered into buying things in my core device usage.

As a long time Apple device user...Apple can fuck right off.

[–] superduperpirate@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I’d almost rather use a paper map book than get face slapped by ads in a smartphone navigation app.

Back to printing off turn by turn directions on MapQuest or keeping a folded travel map in the seat pocket
