This is a flat, substabtial interface with the 10th Amendment's allowance of states to manage and run elections. If a state allows elections such that they aren’t denied on account of race, gender, and people under 18, they can be run however the states deem. Requiring someone to register with the federal government is not a power of Congress

So it's 100% certain now that he is going to declare the election invalid to keep Republican majority control.

[–] backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

I think not only that, they want to make sure they have all the kinks worked out in their system before the next presidential election. He’s going to run, there’ll be legal challenges but he’ll do it anyway, he’ll win and use that to justify that it’s the “will of the people”, SCOTUS will rubber stamp that excuse, Congress will cheer like they did when Palpatine declared himself Emperor.

Maybe after they rig this one more people will start recognizing this is beyond a problem that can be solved with elections.

[–] chahn.chris@piefed.social 8 points 2 days ago (4 children)

If he does this and the elections do seem like they were tampered with by our government, do we need to get the rebellion going?

What steps can we take short of that at that point?

[–] Colonel_Panic_@eviltoast.org 23 points 2 days ago

If he steals the election I believe the correct action is to storm the Capital, right? That's what they said and did.

[–] xistera@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 days ago

It has to start somewhere

It has to start sometime

What better place than here?

What better time than now?

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

There's a reason I've been stocking up on guns and ammo. I don't have high hopes that the future is going to be great.

[–] PolarKraken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

I think that's gotta be the line.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 59 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How the fuck is this even supposed to work at all in Oregon and Washington?

Oh right, it's not, and the point is to completely disenfranchise those states from a national election entirely.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

This EO will certainly be shot down by the courts like all the election-related ones before it. And if it weren't, states would likely just ignore it and continue to run their own elections like they always have been.

And if it weren’t, states would likely just ignore it and continue to run their own elections like they always have been.

Well, Oregon and Washington have all-mail-in-voting.

If ballots are not being delivered to voters homes by USPS, that actually is a major issue.

You can't vote without your ballot, and in these states your ballot is mailed to you for you to return.

So if USPS is refusing to deliver ballots to people not on the Federal registry, that means people won't get their ballots to begin with, which is actually something that Washington and Oregon don't control since USPS is Federal.

Trump signed a sweeping executive order in March that, in part, ordered the Postal Service to only send mail ballots to voters on lists created and controlled by the federal government.

It means that both States will have to run around trying to figure out how to get the ballots to the voters to begin with. This isn't about not delivering them once they have already voted, this is about delivering the ballot that allows them to vote to begin with. If those ballots go undelivered, the voters who did not recieve ballots cannot vote. They can run their own elections, but they aren't in control of the Post Office.

The only other options will be for the states to throw together a last minute ramshackle operation to get people to come in and physically get their ballots, which takes time, effort, and becomes a barrier to voting. Which is obviously the fucking point.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Send 'em in unmarked envelopes with no return address then. How would they know it's a ballot?

Could also use a private service like UPS or DHL. It'd be expensive but maybe you could get a bulk rate.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Oh yeah, that's really helpful. That's just dimissing the entire point that they've created a barrier to voting, and Washington alone has over 5 million registered voters, with an average of 4 million ballots cast in Presidential elections and 2 million ballots cast in mid-term elections. That's still 2 million fucking people you have to figure out an all new process for in less than six months. Less than that if the court fucking dawdles while making a stay on it and not actually coming down with a ruling in favor of Trump until closer to the election.

You're just saying exactly what I am saying is the problem: You've got a massive number of people to do this with, and in less than six months you have to figure out how to create a new system from scratch from the old system, in a way to get around it, and in a way that Trump doesn't get whiff of and write another EO for like "don't deliver mail with no return address in blue states." We shouldn't have to be doing anything at all, and the reason he is doing it this fucking way is to make it harder on everyone. Stop dismissing making the job harder and more likely to have mistakes made which will give Trump even more reasons to discredit votes from those states.

If you think it's so simple why don't you sign the fuck up to be Secretary of State for Oregon or Washington?

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

It still signals intent. They'll just do it off-book.

It'll be shot down in the courts, while Trump cronies ignore it and fuck up the elections anyway. They don't care, if they stay in power the court rulings won't matter.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago

Fuck these miserable fuckers!!! What the everlovin fuck! Can't win because you're so abhorrent so you cheat and you still suck ass and fail. Stupid bastards, I'm just so tired of all this.

Mail in voting for ALL. National voting day holiday. Abolish the EC cheat system. One vote for every fucking person, no land voting, no corporations voting.

The Dems need to push this shit ^ as their agenda!!!

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Colorado has had mail-in voting for years, but I think many people drop off their ballots at the various ballot box locations.

It's not clear whether this asshole will be able to fuck with that.

I hate Republicans so very much. They ruin everything and should never be allowed into office, on any level. I will never forgive the Republican base for what they have done to this country, either.

[–] hissingmeerkat@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 days ago

Pretty hard to drop your ballot off at a drop box when you never got it because the postal service disappeared it.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It’s not clear whether this asshole will be able to fuck with that.

He'll try, but the post office stuff is technically a Congressional type of power since postal roads are Article 1. But, Article 2 lets the executive staff the post office via nomination. Since they're all in a cult, it makes sense that USPS is doing this, but he technically can't say what is mail-able.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

USPS likes to think of itself as completely independent. This news hasn't even hit the organization yet, the fallout will be interesting. I can see finance and their lawyers squawking about the massive amount of lawsuits that could come out of this, as now USPS is the one harming them.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So basically Dewhine the fucker Biden should of fired is going throw out all mail in votes. Basically ending mail in voting no matter what the states say.

[–] officermike@lemmy.world 39 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

DeJoy left the position last year. Postmaster general is now David Steiner.

I say send the ballots anyway and charge him with one count each of felony mail tampering and election fraud for every ballot that doesn't get delivered.

Edit: corrected "postmaster"

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

It'd be quite a circus too since election interference is a state crime, so he'd be carted around for trial in every state that charged him (basically every blue state, since the red state governments are full of people who probably waived the tiki torches).

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The usps isn’t even a federal entity. That’s what is fucked. They screw postal workers every chance they get. No federal holidays paid but when the Feds are feeling horny the usps is the first to get fucked.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What's a cult?

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago
[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

What are the odds of blue states setting up their own mail services in response to this?

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Like near zero, no one understands how expensive delivering mail is and how much of USPS funding is tied into real estate. If USPS was restricted from shipping packages they would go under tomorrow.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago

I doubt it can be done in time for the election.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That sucks but

Trump ++signed a sweeping executive order++ in March that, in part, ordered the Postal Service to only send mail ballots to voters on lists created and controlled by the federal government.

it doesn't necessarily prevent states from mailing ballots using UPS or FedEx, etc.?

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Can you afford to put a UPS label on things when a stamp would normally do? I can't.

[–] artyom@piefed.social -2 points 1 day ago

LOL I'm not the government

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Only the USPS can legally postmark them, with rules limiting the ability to send them to voters via other services.
