Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

ICE uses Israeli spyware Graphite, installed on phones through a zero-click messaging exploit, to decrypt people's encrypted messages.

Is that why my phone battery just suddenly drains now?

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My phone battery just a few weeks back started to drain faster as well. When I used reddit it did too, when I switched to lemmy it stopped, until a little back.

Was thinking it's time for another factory reset, it's just such a pain.

I use an Android app called SD Maid that cleans up my old-as-the-hills phone. As soon as I use the app my phone is faster.

Probably one of the planned obsolescence updates. My Galaxy watch just got two of them and now it needs to be charged once a day.

[–] timwa@lemmy.snowgoons.ro 1 points 2 days ago

Tbf, since they moved to WearOS Galaxy Watch always chews through the battery for a day or two after an upgrade, and then returns to normal. I presume it's doing a load of background app refreshes/optimisations after the update.

GrapheneOS would be the perfect OS for all phones if it would actually work on a phone that is not a Google Pixel.

Until GrapheneOS is going to have support for other hardware, it will be going nowhere really slow

They recently announced a partnership with Motorola Mobility (a subsidiary of China's Lenovo) to offer it on a non-Google phone. Is this what you had in mind?

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

Having a Moto, this is freaking exciting. Because the Pixel's iPhone-wannabe qualities (lack of expandable storage, chiefly) irk me so.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well sorta... This means that we only need like 200 more partnerships and we're there!

Even with motorola support, you'd still have only a tiny part of the market. I don't own a google or motorola phone, so now what?

[–] who@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago

I don’t own a google or motorola phone, so now what?

Campaign for your favorite phone manufacturer to make a phone with the features required by GrapheneOS, and when they do, make that your next phone.

Or use something other than GrapheneOS.

I got nothing useful from that linked discussion.

Now we just need a Diamond to fill out the fight card

Anytime I see someone describe some form of software, I do generally understand what they're trying to mean, but I can't help but think of it as software that runs so inefficiently that it consumes a ton of power.

Also, hey man, stop using whatsapp.

Also, hey man, stop using whatsapp

Spyware can affect any messaging app so I'm not sure what this has to do with this post.

[–] CaptainSpaceman@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

WhatsApp also reads your messages, its fake e2ee like Telegram

Use Signal, Matrix, etc

[–] NoTagBacks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Did you read the post? The Spyware specifically targeted whatsapp, hence my mentioning it.

[–] dan@upvote.au -2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

WhatsApp is targeted because it's the most popular messaging app. If another app becomes popular, it'll be targeted too. I guess using a niche app is one way to avoid the spyware, but it's likely collecting data from all apps, not just WhatsApp.

[–] Aethr@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

No, the spyware is literally distributed through WhatsApp. Read the article.

Here's an unencrypted message for ICE: Suck my dick

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago

Shocked I tell.
