Of all the animals, I would rate Warthogs as one of the most flightless. Odd choice.

[–] ninja@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Warthog is a nickname that they couldn't get rid of. It's officially the Thunderbolt II.

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think its kind of dumb because the P-47 Thunderbolt was a high altitude interceptor/fighter that also happened to be good at ground pounding.

The A-10 is exclusively a ground pounder that becomes a sitting duck if it ever gets caught with its pants down.

Dunno why they copted a fighter name.

[–] The_v@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A-10 is live target practice for Iran's domestically produced manpads. It should not be anywhere near this conflict. That they are using it at all shows massive incompetence.

The whole reason why there isn't a modern equivalent to the A-10 is because the Air Force knew that said plane wouldn't be able to survive in a conflict where the enemy had any surface-to-air attack capability.

Great name for the Halo jeep thing. Horrible name for a jet.

[–] Hathaway@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Looks more like a puma to me

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

It does look like that, yes.

Don't think that plane is going to rise again in three days.

[–] BedSharkPal@lemmy.ca 27 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Isn't this the one that goes Brrrrrrt?!

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 42 points 1 week ago

Well now it goes brrrrrrn't

[–] ohshit604@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Many of our GAU-8s have A-10s installed on them. One fewer now, apparently.

I'm not an expert, but I've read that A-10s don't have very good missile defenses, and they will be pretty vulnerable in Iran, which is stuffed full of missiles

The planes are like 40 years old

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wikipedia says they were built from 1072-1984 so yeah, old.

But we don’t have anything to replace it for super low ground support like that.

Everyone else uses drones for that, for a reason.

Those A10s really mopped up in The Crusades!

Back when Fairchild Republic was called Fairchild Monarchy.

[–] PanArab@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Didn't the military request more recently?

Who names an airplane "warthog"? pigs can't fly and neither can the pig-pilots inside them.

[–] hypeerror@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 week ago

I thought that was the point. They made a tank with wings and kept adding thrust until the pig flew.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 3 points 1 week ago

The Army has trying to get more of them for over a decade. The Air Force doesn't want them.

The same people who named the B-52 the Big Ugly Fat Fucker: The USAF.

Tbh I'm more offended that the US names its helicopters after indigenous people groups it's genocided

[–] JillyB@beehaw.org 2 points 1 week ago

It's officially called the A-10 Thunderbolt. "Warthog" is a nickname service members gave it. Similar to the F-16 Fighting Falcon getting nicknamed the "Viper".

[–] CyberMonkey403@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 week ago

If that kills that goddamn brain dead "brrt" meme, I will officially proclaim this to be a positive effect of this war

[–] AmazingSUPERG@thelemmy.club 10 points 2 weeks ago

Oh no Powerglide!!

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago
[–] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

that's impressive. those things are armored like tanks that fly.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

Tanks that don't fly aren't doing that hot these days either. Slapping a red bull on it didn't help
