Been distracted with playing The Sims again. Sometimes silliness is needed in this world lol

Also been diving back into Civ 6. I never played other versions of Civ and am toying with the idea of trying older versions. Any recs?

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

4 is a fan favorite but has a grid instead of hexes, so it plays a bit different. I'm also partial to 3 since that's where I started. Each era has its own lovable jank.

Bear in mind that districts weren't a thing until 6, so that pretty radically changes how you plan and build cities.

[–] sneakypersimmon@lemmy.today 0 points 1 month ago

Thanks!! I think I'm leaning towards taking a crack at 4 :)

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I like Civ V personally. I like the hexagons and I like the one-unit-per-tile instead of death stacks, even though the AI isn't great at using it without community patches. I also like its visuals the most.

It also has the beloved fan mod Vox Populi, if you want to get into all that.

[–] sneakypersimmon@lemmy.today 0 points 1 month ago

Ohh this sounds tempting, too. Thanks for the info :)

Civ V is in that sweet spot between not being VI/VII and not quite showing it's age yet. It's got some great mods like the LotR stuff and Faerun. IMO for fantasy 4x, Warlock II with the Renaissance overhaul mod is best though.

Which Sims are you going with, the original or one of the later ones?

[–] sneakypersimmon@lemmy.today 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Mostly building in Sims 4, I find I enjoy the building parts much more than the older versions. I do boot up Sims 2 from time to time. Such a classic!

[–] Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Are you playing the base game or with expansions? I never really managed to get into TS4 for some reason and I wonder how much it had to do with having only the vanilla version and how much with simply preferring the older titles. I should really give it another shot someday.

[–] sneakypersimmon@lemmy.today 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I play with a bunch of expansions and kits.

The biggest disappointment with Sims 4 is that originally it was being designed to be online-only - similar to Sim City which was a huge disaster and the fanbase got PISSED. So they backtracked and released Sims 4 with a bunch of things stripped from it and it felt really empty.

Over the years, the base game has definitely gotten better. There's more unique playstyles that are possible, they added some life states, a bunch more for building, etc. It's worth it to give it another shot since the base game is free now (I think?).

[–] Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, I tried it vanilla during the weird middle ground where it got some improvements but was still lacking in many aspects - I'm pretty sure it got more updates since then. Do you think the base game is good enough to try on its own or are there any expansions/kits that you'd say are not necessarily required but at least strongly recommended?

[–] sneakypersimmon@lemmy.today 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I would def try out the base game first before committing to purchasing any expansions or kits. Even though the game is old, EA keeps those expansions at full cost. There's been enough added that it should scratch the itch and give you an idea if you want to invest in more.

The expansions I would recommend first are Seasons and Get Together - adding weather and holidays helps with immersion and being able to have clubs and control how sims hang out more is a plus. Life & Death and Growing Together are great expansions for fleshing out interpersonal relationships and getting really unique sims.

[–] Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll keep them in mind if I end up sticking with the game in the future.

Factorio. Please send help, I can't stop.

[–] ragas@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 month ago

Can't. Factory must grow.

Thinking about some time in the water with subnautica

Figured it's time to give Elden Ring: Nightreign a fair shot.

I'm trying to be responsible and work on rebuilding my homelab setup, but I made the bad decision to install the Progression Modpack for Rimworld and have been dipping into that a bit for like an hour or 2 before bed lately. I'm excited to get deeper into it!

bg3. have cleared out as much of the tower as I can without getting everyone hostile like the prison and the dock and the front and the balcony. I did the inn of course and the east side of the map so now heading to the house of healing to find arebellas parents and the sick guy thing.

I've decided to try and play the all mainline Resident Evil games, to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Currently on RE 0, and I've previously beaten 2 remake, 3 remake, 4 remake, 7, 8, and 9. I'm pretty excited for 5 and 6, just to see if they're as bad as everyone says

[–] Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

RE6 isn't really that bad honestly. Sure, it's not the greatest game in the series but as long as you keep in mind it's an action game and learn how to play (it has a surprisingly deep combat system which isn't explained in the game itself) there's plenty to enjoy. This guide shows a good amount of what's possible, if you're curious.

Still playing ~~losing~~ skirmish matches to the veteran ai in Gates of Hell: Ostfront.

Also randomly started a Miitopia save :D

I'm almost done with Race Driver: GRID. I got all the cars, won all but the final 6 races and pretty much got my fill of the game. I soured on it a bit (mostly due to the amount of events I'm not a huge fan of) but I still like it overall. Not enough to grind for the first place on the career leaderboard though.

I won't be writing a big summary of the experience as I already mentioned everything before (limited number of tracks, aggressive opponents, mostly fun driving model etc). What I can write however is: playing this title gave me a bit of insight into what I'm interested in in a racing game (in term of events). For GRID the end result looks like this:

Favourite events Least favourite events
Touge (not even close) Destruction Derby (I'm so glad it barely exists)
Touring Cars Club GT
Open Wheel 24 Hours Le Mans

Everything else is pretty much a toss-up depending on the event or track, varying between "this is great" and "please kill me". It was fun but I'm kinda glad I'll be moving to something else soon.

Are there a lot of cinematics and cutscenes? I tried forza horizon as i think ot was the most popular game at the time and i just wanted to get up and walk away from the computer every time theres like a 30 second cutscene explaining the story and i just wanna drive the damn car in a race!

[–] Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

There isn't any real story beyond "you're starting a race team, good luck" - it's completely focused on gameplay. The only "cutscenes" in the game are short videos explaining certain event types but they only show up once or can be skipped (24H Le Mans).

I'm playing FH4 atm and I feel that! The combination of NPCs always talking, the UI being locked while they do and the fact you can't lower the speech volume below 1/10 is pretty fucking annoying.

I think FH5 was a bit better in that regard but it's been a while so I may be mis-remembering.

Withering Rooms

I've been absolutely absorbed by this game the past week, having finally pulled the trigger on it after eyeing it for a long time. It's a 2.5D light horror roguelike, but there is so much more to it than it seems at first. Whenever I think I have a handle on it it keeps throwing new cool stuff at me, and the world building and story just keeps getting more interesting the more I play. It has a very unique vibe to it and a very distinctive and unique voice and direction.

The combat is clunky and janky yes, but you do get used to it and it gets a bit better after you start unlocking more tools, spells and weapons and start being able to actually make focused builds. The build crafting and customization is fun even when the mechanics of the combat itself is a little clunky. But this isn't a game you play for the combat anyway, but for the exploration, the lore, the story and the world building. Which is also partly told through item descriptions, Dark Souls-style.

Honestly I really don't want to spoil anything as the game has some interesting surprises so if you think this is your vibe I recommend just giving it a chance. It's very cool and I can see why it's such a beloved hidden gem. I can't wait to see what else it has up its sleeve.

Been going hard on Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

Besides that, I’m 10-11 hours into Stella Glow on my 2DS XL, and have been playing Grim Dawn and Slay the Spire 2 co-op with my wife.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How are you finding Stranger Of Paradise? Since getting into Ninja Gaiden this past year I've come into contact with some more CAG players and some of them talked it up as having really great combat.

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I’m enjoying it. I bounced off the game the first time I played as I was expecting maybe a more traditional Final Fantasy experience and it didn’t click with me. I’ve played a few souls-likes since and the gameplay is meshing better for me now, though it’s still difficult at times.

Combat is enjoyable, but the gear filtering and management is kind of annoying.

I’ve read it’s similar to Nioh’s gameplay but I’m not familiar with that one.

Sorry, I forgot to answer but thanks for the reply! I do like Team Ninja so I might pick it up on a sale.

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

All good, and picking it up on sale is a good idea. I finished it today. It's a good game and the gameplay loop is fun, but the story was just... ugh, convoluted to fit into Final Fantasy canon. The plot suffered from "good idea, poor execution."

This week I finished "Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark" (EGS freebie) and launched my first rocket in "Factorio". Both are great games.

For Darkside Detectives, the site nicegamehints.com was really useful. It contains a lot of hints for games that help you without spoilering stuff for you. Great if you get really stuck.

Factorio was great too. I will definitely be playing more of it, but I'm taking a break to prevent burning myself out. I finished with every research unlocked and a Spidertron built. I used zero imported blueprints. But my factory was structured in such a way that it was impossible to grow much further without tearing most of it down (scaling up oil is hard!).

For now I'm playing "Far Cry: Primal" which I had in my backlog for some time. The first few hours have been fun but installing almost made me refund it. Ubisoft Connect is horrible and the service wouldn't sent me the confirmation mail I needed. And after that the game bugged out on my high DPI display, until I figured out how to change display setting without a mouse. I'll think twice (nay, thrice!) about buying a Ubisoft game in the future.

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 0 points 1 month ago

Reminds me I haven't picked anything yet. Finished a game on Saturday but the following days were pretty busy for me. What to play now...

[–] eezeebee@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Corn Kidz 64.

Lemmy recommended it to me a few times. So far so good!

A few parts have been quite a bit more difficult than I was expecting, and I'm currently stuck again so will have to look up a guide for the next step. Besides a few instances of not knowing the intended path it's been great so far.

[–] lath@piefed.social 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm going to try for the Witcher trilogy, but I can't say I'll follow through.

[–] Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I have a few tips for the first Witcher that might help a bit. Its combat is like a (simple) rhythm game, you need to click with specific timing (signalled by the change of mouse cursor) to keep the optimal combo going. Also keep enemy weaknesses, your combat style etc in mind when fighting - not engaging with game mechanics can make things way more difficult then they really are and it's one of the reasons many people bounce off of the game. Sure, it's old and somewhat janky but some of the problems can be avoiding by playing properly.

Anyway, that's just a suggestion. Good luck!

[–] lath@piefed.social 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Right now, my problem is technical. The first Witcher isn't made for modern systems, so it crashes a lot.

  • Cutscenes leading into loading screen will freeze the game. It happens when crossing from the prologue to first act.

  • if lighting isn't set go low in settings, cutscenes will start during combat

  • game can crash during combat

  • run too fast or too long, game crashes

  • try to exit the game normally, it stops responding.

It definitely did not age well.

[–] Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oof, that sounds rough indeed. Can't say I had to deal with any of these issues myself though my last playthrough was a few years back so perhaps I lucked out. What system are you running it on, if you don't mind me asking? I'm curious what could be the reason for that.

[–] lath@piefed.social 0 points 1 month ago

The reasons seem to be graphics. Set most of them to low and the problems disappeared for now.

[–] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm playing the last of us part 2. Finished part 1 last week and enjoyed it so much i jumped straight into part 2. I think I'm about half way into it. I've somehow managed to mostly avoid spoilers - I have a vague idea what happens but I still don't really know how it's going to end. Damn, what a story.

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago

I loved TLOU1, truly a fantastic game. The sequel, I never finished. Got a little over halfway through. I hope you beat it though.

[–] UnPassive@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

My brother and I have been trying to get every achievement in Ark Survival Evolved. This week we're trying to defeat the gardians of the center.
