Marry? Sure! Reproduce? Nah, we'll stick to hiking, video games, and anarchist gardening, thanks.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 97 points 4 months ago (2 children)

How do you grow an anarchist?

[–] smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works 97 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Very hard to cultivate, they only want to grow wild.

[–] LordCrom@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago
[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I think they meant Antichrist.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 12 points 4 months ago

But we already have Peter Thiel, we don't need him at home as well.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 76 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Children are not economically viable.

[–] ZeDoTelhado@lemmy.world 53 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (6 children)

You may be half joking, but I've discussed this many times with my partner. Society, by today's definition, do not reward at all having kids. However, for a society to keep going you **need ** children, so wtf is supposed to happen? No children, society just grows old at at some point you have a massive decline in the younger brackets? And then is just old folks yelling at clouds? Also, another detail, the mono parental lifestyle we have nowadays is actually quite recent. And I do think is very much impossible to have the expected amount of children on such system

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 39 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Every society values status and wealth. This time we've taken that to the extreme, to the exclusion of everything else. It's going to be one of the failed experiments in history.

Ancient Greece even had those episodes where the rich managed to get farmers deep in debt. A bunch of them just left. Another bunch became serfs. The end result was productivity tanking and food security becoming problematic. Cue debt relief, changing laws, ... The rich will always fuck it up for everybody and themselves given enough time, sometimes they learn, and they do it all again a century later.

[–] MrKoyun@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Oh oh, but this time its different, this time they are going to make ChatGPT do the work of the peasants!

ChatGPT, please keep all of society going.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 5 points 4 months ago

Great question, Mr. Koyun.

First, you start with hiring great people to do the task you want. Do you need more information about hiring practices and selection criteria?

[–] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

It's okay. Elon said AI and his robots will mean we'll all be rich on UBI soon, so he wants everyone to have more kids.

[–] veni_vedi_veni@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago

I used to think he was delusional, his wealth making him believe he actually knows better, but he's actually a glorified con man.

He's done it so many times in the past, where he will admit he promoted fsd and car hyper loops. not because he believes in those ideas, but because he just wanted to saturate the headlines, and sweep aside promoting public transit in the zeitgeist.

I wish people would stop using his platforms, so they weren't forced to waste comprehension on the guy's thoughts...

But without children, who will fight your forever wars and be trafficked by the Oligarchs who want to create 24/7 mass surveillance with live facial recognition tracking?

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 4 months ago (2 children)

there's a lot of negative feedback loops in nature (it sounds negative but is actually a positive thing). it means that when you have a tendency going one way, then that creates a counter-pressure which makes the tendency go the other way.

so if people have less children today, that somehow will make it more attractive for future generations to have more children. in the end, it will oscillate (go up and down) until it stabilizes around a stable value. so no worries, it's gonna be fine.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 months ago

Worst case it will oscillate and not stabilise. Then you get generations with a lot of people and generations with very few people. If you have for example pension systems build on the expectation that you have at least a stable population, ideally a growing population, then this will cause a lot of problems, you can see this in Germany for example. If your population oscillates over decades then you need to adapt your society, your government, all the systems to this oscillation.

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 1 points 4 months ago

Feels like more hubris to think humanity is any different from animals in this regard.

In nature this does not always happen.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 months ago

It would be helpful if people added where they are from, or am I supposed that if you don't, that you're an usanian?

[–] toofpic@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I would be so fucking rich without a family! I can live on ramen and gaming (I am 41, and this never changed), sobI would have like 80% of disposable income up for saving

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

You don't need money. Shh. Have babies.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 6 points 4 months ago

The rich have bought out trailer parks. And the factories where they make trailers. So even going that route is being exploited.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 47 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The ruling class want church to be our third space but every church my family dragged me to as a teen everyone was either 30+ years older than me or single digit ages.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 18 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Places like community halls, union halls etc used to fill this need.

[–] lovely_reader@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

Yup but they aren't profitable so we can't have them

[–] AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works 41 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Oh you can't find a partner even willing to get married and reproduce right now?

They just keep repeating the same nonsense on loop like:

"Are you literally insane?"

"Have you even noticed the present reality we're living in?"

"I could be charged with a crime just for having complications during pregnancy."

"They hooked a braindead woman in Georgia up to life support last year like a human incubator. She attempted to go to the ER because of a painful headache. Instead of helping her they gave her 2 aspirin and sent her home where she suffered from a ruptured brain aneurysm."

"They literally just sent her away when she sought their help, but only after declaring her braindead decided to actually admit her to the hospital."

"They made her family wait to remove her from life support until she had given birth to a premature baby. The baby was born with multiple birth defects he will struggle with for the rest of his life."

"Of course they aren't even giving him healthcare or helping to pay his medical bills. They kept his mother alive like some kind of science experiment from the Handmaid's Tale, and demanded he be born simply to refuse to help him survive."

"Because it turns out the world is literally run by completely sadistic pedophiles. They don't even need an Epstein anymore because now they're legally allowed to kidnap and traffick children!"

"They're splitting families apart and holding them indefinitely in concentration camps. There's been multiple documented cases of murder, abuse, and sexual assault carried out by guards, and we're just letting it happen. Now they're buying up warehouses across the country to convert into more camps!"

"How can you even think about something like that?! They're dragging us into an endless WWIII just to distract from the pedophiles and help corporations increase their profits! What the fuck do you think they're planning to do with all these kids they're trying to force us to give birth to?"

Psssh, sounds like typical unhinged feminism. Destroying the American dream.

[–] the_grass_trainer@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago

Thank God I've never run into whomever you have. I just hear:

"It'll happen when it's time."

"You've got your entire life ahead of you still."

"Don't rush into it; enjoy your single years."

Ugh... Time is running out each day, I'm half way to my old years, and i HAVE enjoyed being single. Now I'm ready to move forward.

[–] null@lemmy.org 22 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Down payment on a house or pay the hospital for one child birth. Choose.

[–] toofpic@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Not living in the US solves the hospital problem

[–] lovely_reader@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Unfortunately that's not an option for most people living in the US

[–] Zink@programming.dev 5 points 4 months ago

And even for those of us who might have the means or the marketable skills to get citizenship elsewhere, that only changes the tradeoff into creating new family by leaving all existing family.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

this is the way. renting a city apartment + investing in stocks for the same amount of monthly total expenses is more profitable

[–] berg@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Line go down, rent go up. What do?

This is just not true for many people. A home is an asset. When paying a mortgage, you build equity that can be recouped if you decide to sell, or which can be used as collateral for another loan. When renting, you are still paying a mortgage, except is the landlord's and you own nothing. Rent prices can also change at any time and by large amounts, forcing renters to move. The cost of owning a home is much more stable and predictable.

Homes are also typically bought with a loan and a relatively small down payment, making them a leveraged asset. Eg, if you put down 30k on a 300k house and prices increase 5%, the value of your home just went up 15k. If you instead just put 30k in stocks, you would need an increase of 50% to get the same result.

Regardless, when it comes to housing, your primary concern should always be stability and not "profitability".

[–] ieGod@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

This is one of the greatest myths out there. Renting usually comes out ahead by the numbers. Ramit Sethi has a lot to say on the topic, with a US focus. Ben Felix has the same perspective for the Canadian side. Home owners by and large aren't honest with themselves about the total cost of ownership.

Edit:

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

yeah i was gonna say, some dude published a (german) analysis of the total cost of buying a house / renting an apartment + investing in stocks for the same total yearly expenses and found that with the second option, you end up having more wealth at retirement age.

i can't find the study rn but i'm sure i remember it.

it also makes sense intuitively since renting an apartment in a city uses much less resources overall. both in terms of material used for the building (since you share most of your walls with your neighbors) but also in terms of transport being significantly cheaper.

this is especially true if you live in cities with strong communal housing, like vienna.

[–] hayvan@piefed.world 15 points 4 months ago

No wage, bus spend.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 9 points 4 months ago

Where village square with big tree

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Yeah, but like... Then I would have kids, and even apart from the whole "giving birth" thing, or how expensive they are, having kids sounds absolutely awful.

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Fine! I'll marry and try to reprpduce.

[–] evol@lemmy.today 5 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Is there a time besides maybe the 2010s where people had more disposable income ? What 3rd spaces did we have decades ago that we do not now ?

We have surrendered the future to religious extremists which is pretty depressing

[–] flamingleg@lemmy.ml 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

in the 1990s we would gather in giant rooms full of people smoking cigarettes, and we would put small metal discs into machines so we could yell at people for sucking at video games in person and it was a kind of church for many

[–] evol@lemmy.today 1 points 4 months ago

We have arcades still ?

[–] berg@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 months ago

Is there a time besides maybe the 2010s where people had more disposable income ?

Yeah, bud.

It was called 1940-2007.

[–] notabot@piefed.social 1 points 4 months ago

What 3rd spaces did we have decades ago that we do not now ?

It's not necessarily that they're entirely gone, but there's fewer of them, and they may not be as accessible. Off the top of my head, a few examples might be things like:

  • Public libraries
  • Social clubs/Youth clubs
  • Open spaces
  • Skate parks/outdoor gyms

Some communities are managing to hang on to their third spaces, or even create new ones, but it seems to be very uneven.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Hungary has some, but it's the one suggested by the book "The Bell Curve". That's why all the fascists like Elon Musk like our tax system.

[–] abbiistabbii@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 months ago

They don't want to have third places because in third places you might plan things that the authorities do not like.

[–] slappyfuck@lemmy.ca -1 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Is a “third space” really an issue for people? Affordability really solves everything.

[–] stormeuh@lemmy.world 15 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Yes, because:

  • a small apartment is more comfortable when you have other spaces where you can exist for free

  • in our increasingly isolated society we need more spaces for serendipitous socializing

It does tie into affordability though, because the lack of third spaces is in itself an indication of an over-exploited real-estate market. A third space is almost by definition not maximally exploited, because you're allowing non-paying patrons to take space which could be used by paying ones. Allowing non-paying patrons is only a moral question up to some point, after that it's just the market forcing the choice between more exploitation or bankruptcy.

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 12 points 4 months ago

Expectation to spend money sidelines all the people who cant afford it. Its not nice to sit somewhere and watch everyone else buying stuff and knowing you yourself cant.

Third spaces = freedom to come and go and stay as you please.

Try going to some cafe and never buy anything at all, but spend entire day there. See how it goes for you.
