Trump told Republicans not to "waste" their time on extending the enhanced ACA subsidies set to expire, saying he'd only support "sending the money directly back to the people."

Republicans are careening to a health care cliff with no solution in hand. An estimated 22 million people in the U.S. are about to see their health insurance premiums soar by, in some cases, thousands of dollars per month, as billions in funding for the Affordable Care Act expires on Dec. 31. The expiring funds, costing about $35 billion per year, were first passed during the pandemic to subsidize insurance payments, capping premiums for a “benchmark” ACA, or “Obamacare,” plan to 8.5% of income.

Remember when Republicans shut down the government for 43 days, specifically to prevent Democrats from saving these subsidies? And then the Democrats caved for no reason and got nothing? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 35 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Pepperidge Farm had to be sold due to medical bills. Now he is sucking dick behind the 7-11 for chemo medicine money.

schumer specifically, hes the one orchestrated it behind the scenes, he only was against it publically, because looks bad in optics. he holds all the cards in funding senate campagins, he has as power as mitch did with the gop. hes more or less the DINO(GOP-LITE) version of mitch.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 14 points 7 months ago (2 children)

He is highly despised right now, by EVERYBODY. He sat by and allowed MAGA to happen. While McConnell could get anything done, even without a majority, Schmuckie can't do anything, even when he had majorities.

He's been incredibly weak, cowardly, and corrupt, when we most needed a warrior. AOC could easily humiliate him in the primary, the way she did Markey to get her seat.

And Schmuck shouldn't be alone. A LOT of Dems should get primaried next year. They'll either lose to a more motivated candidate, or they'll get a clue, and start doing their jobs.

I wouldn't be surprised if what the Dems got was certain names redacted from the about-to-be-released Epstein files in exchange for ending the shutdown

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 13 points 7 months ago

PROBABLY the major donors. and then theres thiel who has been in with epstein since 1990s, yea he recently dumped his stocks as a way to shield his assets.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

I haven't been too keen on Democrats since maybe always, but they've usually been the better option and their liberal populism can be influenced quite easily so it's usually the better choice.

But between Israel and this last fiasco with literally abandoning the ONE good thing their party pushed through, the ACA marketplace subsidies (which was still pretty anemic considering) I will never forget what they did. I have been directly harmed by these rat bastards.

I don't have any illusions that we're going to build a third party, our country doesn't currently work that way. But I sure as shit am going to help advocate for flushing every old-guard, establishment Democrat out of office as soon as humanly possible. Useless, steaming pile of old-money fucks suckling at the Republican's teets.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 78 points 7 months ago (1 children)

So glad we gave him everything he wanted so now we have no leverage at all. Another masterful play by Chuck Schumer.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 9 points 7 months ago (1 children)

he probably knows the other 13 dems that wasnt chosen to end the shutdown would be harmed by thier seats, thats why he went with the 8 that either is retiring or not up for election.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 7 points 7 months ago (4 children)

Why do people keep assuming Chuck Schumer is some master tactician when literally all we've ever seen from him is failure after failure?

[–] drhodl@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

THIS was another failure, so it's in form for him.

[–] TheBlindPew@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 7 months ago

Because bumbling into failures is the tactic he chooses to achieve the goals of his donors, not his constituents but the people who have given him the money to get into his position of power in the first place specifically so that he can pretend to be on board with improving the country only to torpedo anything that looks like it might improve people's lives if that improvement means his donors missing out on even $1

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

he does hold the key to thier delegates and funding, hes pretty much like how mitch uses his position to force the gop to his will.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Except Mitch McConnel won. His political project was incredibly successful. Schumer has just failed over and over, losing battles and rights and leading the party to their lowest favorability in decades.

The democrats who voted to end the shut down are delusional

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 7 points 7 months ago

Start with Schmuck Schumer.

[–] tree_frog_and_rain@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago (1 children)

No, Chuck Schumer was simply ordering them to do what his donors wanted.

No, they’re not. They’re getting something out of it. I don’t know why that is precisely, but they’re getting something. This was never about caring for their constituents.

Who would have ever guessed that the hypocrite lying liars that always lie would ever lie about such a thing!? Well I never!

I'm so glad our representatives aren't the absolute peak of naive and gullible of all people in existence. It would really suck to be depending on insanely naive and pathetic people.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago

Not naive. Complicit.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 26 points 7 months ago (1 children)

He's been promising the greatest health care plan of all time for a decade, only to admit to "concepts of a plan," an obvious lie, when pressured during a debate.

He's a LIAR. There has never been, and never will be, a MAGA Health Care plan. The health insurance companies have paid handsomely for this precise outcome, and Trump will honor that bribe.

[–] lukaro@lemmy.zip 11 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Their plan is for us to die after giving one of them all our money and the more we suffer while doing it the better.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 7 months ago

Absolutely. There is a deliberate conservative effort to make sure they strip us of every penny when we die, and leave no inheritance to help the next generation.

They don't like it when their experienced 50-something workers get a big inheritance, and decide to retire early, or worse, go into competition, using ideas they've been pushing for years, and getting refused. They may even take some others with them.

Nope, what little money we have, they want. All of it. They even took our pennies, knowing they'll make out over time on the round-up. They are shameless when it comes to taking our money.

And once we are poor, our only use to them will be as slaves.

The Trump administration is working really hard to prove Luigi right

[–] rylock@piefed.zip 23 points 7 months ago (3 children)

Americans clearly need to touch the stove and get burned before they understand what they've unleashed. It's regrettable but saving them from the consequences of their political decisions might be worse in the long term. We're at this horrendous point where things will have to get worse before they have a chance of getting better.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 13 points 7 months ago (4 children)

I’m actually of the opinion that Americans are stupidly selfish because they’ve never had to go through the unifying thread of war and mass destruction on their country. They’ve never endured a community/county level hardship. The Pandemic was close but even then it wasn’t the visceral, visible destruction.

Republican voters hate Obamacare, but dont want anyone messing with the ACA.

This is 100% real, I have talked to several of these MAGA idiots.

[–] ArtVandelay@lemmy.world 20 points 7 months ago (4 children)

It really makes you wonder if he would have considered extending it if they had offered to simply rename it Trump care

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 7 months ago

That's what we should call the plan that uninsured Americans are on. When asked what health insurance they have, rather than say "None," they should say they have TrumpCare.®

Glad democrats screwed government workers for a record length to achieve absolutely nothing.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

Be fair. They got a THC ban.

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 17 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I know many/most of you are aware of how bad this is, but I'm still gonna bitch here.

I lost my job as a result of the Trump administration's policies. While I had other options for health insurance (ex: COBRA), getting an ACA plan made the most sense to me at the time. It was shittier in comparison to what I had at my job (and what I would have retained access to via COBRA), but mostly comparable in the easy to measure ways (i.e. out of pocket costs and coverage of necessary meds) and cost much less than COBRA even without considering those tax credits / subsidies.

Honestly, it was so much work just to figure out which plan made the most sense, I had no idea I needed to check to see if there was a ticking time bomb ready to go off. The new 2026 rates are so much higher with poorer coverage and higher out of pocket expense -- worse in pretty much every way you could think. While I may still opt for one of the low tier plans that's basically catastrophic only + the minimum required coverage, at that price point and for what it provides, I'm sure a lot of people will go without even if they technically could afford the premiums. I know I'm still weighing my options, but it does feel like they took my job then took my access to health care, what next?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 7 months ago (1 children)

COBRA is not a reasonable option for anyone who has just lost their job. It's fucking insulting.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

No shit got that offer after being laid off. Fucking 700 a month, was only getting 1000 in unemployment a month. How the fuck could pay 700 for Cobra.

[–] DSN9@lemmy.ml 4 points 7 months ago (8 children)

Bro emmigration is the only escape from that hellhole. It's simply not worth it for the middle class, they're getting sucked high and dry, and the Dems only response will be corporate subsidiaries vs billionaires, and "we're not trump" while nothing meaningful actually gets done and costs rise across the board, and quality of life goes to shit for the average folks. The headlines say it all, either continual infighting leading to nothing, the fall of democracy, or an actual civil war that will be bloody.

Get the fuck out while you still can. A few years into living in another country, you will despise your new home. Then you might visit your family in the USA, and realize holy hell, things actually got worse and your new home is exponentially better, even with all its failings.

[–] GaryGhost@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Which countries are we able to gain Citizenship? I know some people gained Canadian citizenship through their job. We can't all move to Canada.

I'm waiting for the next 90 day fiance where some white dude from Florida is trying to marry a south American girl for a green card.

"republicnas are careening towards a helth care cliff"? .....no they're not. what cliff? THEIR healthcare and benefits are firmly secured and under no threat whatsoever.

why would they give a shit about your healthcare?? it is a pillar of conservatism to not give a shit about you. never forget, the driving mindset and creed for republicans is: FUCK YOU, I GOT MINE

[–] GaryGhost@lemmy.world 12 points 7 months ago

Cool send me the check. Must be like 30,000 per person

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago
