It's completely self proclaimed, but I'm a battery guy and electronics and automotive repair type of guy. Right down to rebuilding my gen 2 Prius battery that now has about 300,000 miles (482,000 km) on it, including when the original battery failed.
You should worry about both of those things if you're buying used.
Prius batteries last so long because they keep a pretty narrow charge\discharge range, despite the total batteries capacity.
But beyond that, the EV batteries in almost all the fully electric vehicles on the road don't have a km used until failure issue. They have an age issue. Lithium batteries have a shelf life, so to speak. It doesn't matter if the battery has 30,000 km on it or 300,000 km. None of them will last beyond 20 years before they start going bad and there's nothing you can do about it.
That being said, LifePO4 are absolutely the most chemically stable and long lasting lithium based battery currently in any EV's. if you're in the market for an older EV with a lithium battery, either plan on replacing the entire battery at some point (check how much it may cost you. Ranges from $6,000 to over $25,000 in some cases) or at least find one that uses LifePO4 as the battery.
Jury is still out on the semi solid state or solid state batteries. Sodium based batteries "should" outlast the vehicle they're in, but there aren't many in production outside of China yet and they aren't as energy dense so will typically be in shorter ranged vehicles.
It totally sucks that everything is littered with hard to get to and expensive to replace electronics they all use. It will be a pain trying to have a classic ev in the future when caps start leaking everywhere and you can't find replacement necessary to function touchscreens.
there's a useful life for ev service, and there's a useful life after ev service. seeing these arrays being recycled for power storage is the way.
that said: good luck getting all the complex shit in an ICE car to last 20 fuckin years lol. something is gonna give. EVs seem complex, but it's far simpler than the array of shit needed to make gas blammo work as motive force for transport.

Which also flows right into old EV batteries being used for power storage. A 20 year old EV battery would be absolute dogshit for power storage. Like I said before, it isn't a cycle degradation issue as much as a time issue. The battery chemistry cause cell failure over time. It can't be meaningfully used for energy storage. The cells go BAD.

like, there's components on both platforms that will need to be replaced eventually. brake pads. hvac coolant. I'd be amazed if your 20yr old ice vehicle had it's original alternator, water pump, etc.,
because the burning focus you're placing on the cells themselves is silly when you think about all the maintenance and repair / replacement an ICE vehicle will require.

I do repairs myself. But engine coolant is like every 7 years and costs $40. Brakes are $50 every 5+ years. Fun fact, you're supposed to replace the coolant and may have to replace the coolant pump on EVs as well. They run liquid cooling for the battery and the inverter.
An alternator is typically sub $200 and takes like an hour to replace.
You skipped the most frequent thing. Oil changes.
None of that little stuff at all ads up to the ruining of value cost of a $15,000 battery going bad. I've been driving older vehicles for nearly 30 years. I know the costs pretty damned well. Most EVs are still more of a cost sink for regular people than a small ice vehicle that gets 35+ mpg. Tire changes are less frequent and cheaper. The upfront cost of an EV is more, the resell value is a bigger loss, and you're not saving that much in fuel unless you can charge your ev for free. It's getting pretty close to the tipping point, and it will get there, but it hasn't yet. Not unless you're in a country that gives you access to low cost Chinese made EVs.

I've literally have over 20 year old vehicles and it literally has not cost me that much at all for any of them. Not even close. You aren't spending $15k on an ice vehicle unless your engine and transmission both need replaced and you're paying someone else to do it.

Lol. Go research where emissions contributing to global warming are coming from. This is like the plastic recycling push in the 80s. The government and big corporations are making it sound like it's your fault there's a problem and you could fix it. But that's total bullshit. They're the ones causing the majority of the problem, but they're blaming you for it instead. passenger cars are just a small portion of heat causing pollution.
Ironically enough, making electricity is doing more to polute the earth than ice vehicles. Big corpo keeps burning coal and oil and natural gas to make electricity and the government hasn't done shit about it because $$$.
You want to save the planet, quit worrying about cars and start doing something about actual large scale pollution. Every single passenger vehicle on the planet could switch to electric this year and it's not going help save the planet.

Thanks for the tip: When buying a used RV it’s how old the batteries are plus how many miles.
And I don’t care that there won’t be “classic EVs” because I haven’t seen one other than the Slate that seems more than an appliance.
