Iraq’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that it is deeply concerned by reports that Saudi Arabia intercepted and destroyed three drones after they entered the kingdom’s airspace from Iraq, but denied that the aircraft were launched from or passed through Iraqi territory.

Baghdad said its air defense and radar systems recorded no evidence of any such activity and that Iraqi authorities have opened an immediate investigation into the incident.

The ministry called on Saudi officials to share information to help determine what happened and said Iraq remains committed to strong relations with Riyadh and to rejecting any attacks on neighboring countries.

The statement came after Saudi Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said the kingdom intercepted the drones on Sunday and warned that Saudi Arabia reserves the right to respond “at the appropriate time and place” to protect its sovereignty and security.
