They were one of the main front lines of the cold war anyway.

I didn't watch that video, but I can say it's working for me. I've tried to do classroom learning (grammar exercises, vocab memorization), and flash card method, and it's not as fast or enjoyabe as this. I can actually stand in a group of spanish speakers and understand most of what's being said, which wasn't something I could do for years of study in other ways.

Also if some random youtuber is blanket demonizing CI, that's entirely anecdotal, because there have been many studies comparing its performance to other learning methods.

I'm also learning mandarin (and spanish). The comprehensible input method I've found is really the best and simplest way. You can read about it and why it works from the ppl over at dreamingspanish.

For Mandarin I highly recommend https://www.vidioma.com/ . Videos are categorized by difficulty, and it keeps track of what ones you've already watched.

For Spanish, dreamingspanish.com . They do a phenomenal job and have hundreds of entertaining videos on so many topics and difficulties.

If a current or former imperial troop turns a traitor to the empire, then that is an undeniable win. There have been many cases in US history of its troops turning against and betraying their masters, and joining the anti-war movement, and helping other troops do so also. Every single troop that does so, means less innocent people harmed. This should be encouraged and applauded.

We should see people less as static entities and identities, and more as capable of change. All communist countries (PRC, USSR, Vietnam, Cuba) during their civil wars welcomed traitors who saw the wrongness of the other side to their cause with open arms.

I also doubt the claim that many of these former troops would want you to feel sorry for them. If they didn't think they did anything wrong, then they wouldn't have joined the anti-war movements in the first place.

Side point but I'm like 80% sure PSL has nothing to do with that documentary.

It's a great documentary tho. Members / adjacent members of PSL have made their own really good short and long-form documentaries too, like gaza fights for freedom, how palestine became colonized, several great ones on venezuela.

You're likely just encountering the standard "communism and communist parties = bad" in a lot of english-speaking spaces.

PSL has been around a long time and it'd be insulting if anarchist and other ultraleft groups didn't accuse it of everything under the sun (that they usually accuse each other of also). But because it practices demcent, and isn't some trotskyite or anarchist sex cult, It's not been shown that national or even any branch supports abuse.

Currently I got:

  • Bhikkhu Bodhi - The buddha's teaching as it is.
    • I'm getting back into Buddhism more, and this is probably the most comprehensive intro to therevada buddhism.
  • Wendy S Painting - Aberration in the heartland of the real
    • About Timothy Mcveigh and the oklahoma city bombing. Suggested by a comrade on here a few days ago, its really entertaining so far. Don't wanna ruin too much but essentially its similar to the JFK assassination. It was a failed sting operation, and a lot of people involved in the bombing were touts / fed informants, and the FBI sold a "lone wolf" story to the public to protect their informants and cover up their fuckup.
  • Mary Shelley - Frankenstein
    • Love me some gothic horror, and this is the best one of all time.

Hey comrades, I'm looking for some non-fiction book recommendations that aren't explicitly Marxist, but still interesting or engaging or entertaining.

I've re-read a lot of my favorites too many times, so what are your faves? Any topic really.

We're in the process of switching images to a new host, as our old one is shutting down.

I got most images transferred over (we have > 150 GB of images), but they pulled the old image host a month before I was expecting it. I don't know if (or how long) it will take to restore the old one and transfer the rest of the images.

If your profile pictures or other important images are missing, re-upload them for the time being, since I don't know if our old host will accomodate us.

Sorry about this everyone.

I'll do this in a few hours, just wanting to give everyone a heads up.

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Unfortunately the amount of donations has decreased to only 2000€ per month. This leaves only 1000€ per developer, which is not enough to pay my bills. With the current level of donations I will be forced to find another job, and drastically reduce my contributions to Lemmy. To avoid this outcome and keep Lemmy growing, I ask you to please make a recurring donation:

Liberapay | Ko-fi | Patreon | OpenCollective | Crypto

If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name "Luigi".

Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.

Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can't go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached Dessalines and I can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. Please use the link below to see current donation stats and make your contribution! We especially rely on recurring donations to secure the long-term development and make Lemmy the best it can be.
