Anyone wondering that between Brezhnev and Gorby they were Soviet leaders. Also the guy on the left was Nikolai Tikhonov the Soviet Premier at the time if your curious.

If I recall, they died very shortly after becoming the leader of the Soviet Union?

Yes, only a year and a half into his tenure. He was already practically medically incapacitated by the end of the first year.

Andropov was just old; nothing much else really too it. His age exacerbated diabetes related conditions he had which caused renal and kidney failure. At that point there wasn’t much that could be medically done for him.
