Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Men could face terrorism-related and weapons charges after officials say explosive ‘had been lit but failed to function’

Authorities in Utah say two men have been arrested on suspicion of placing an incendiary device under a news media vehicle in Salt Lake City. The bomb didn’t go off.

Police and fire department bomb squads responded on Friday when a suspicious device was found under the vehicle parked near an occupied building.

Investigators determined the bomb “had been lit but failed to function as designed”, according to court records cited by CBS affiliate KUTV.

Not saying I disagree with the statement, but where did you see that these men were Republicans? I didn't find any reference to any political motivation in the article, but I also didn't read it particularly thoroughly

[–] possumparty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 8 months ago (3 children)

If they were left leaning in any way they would have led with that.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 18 points 8 months ago

Sometimes they lead with that even if it's not true.

If they even so much as had a conversation with a left-leaning person news would have led with that especially today

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 8 months ago

Well it's the Guardian, not a US rag. So they won't say anything until the info is released.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 33 points 8 months ago (2 children)

I didn't find any reference to any political motivation

I didn't either, but that probably implies they are white christofacists, right? (Or, as the Utah governor put it, "one of us"?)

If their demographic was any different and fit the narratives that the Right is trying to spin on this, it would have been leaked already....

[–] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 8 points 8 months ago (1 children)

The Utah governor used “one of us” to mean a member of their local community.

I get why it’s such a fun sound bite but it comes across as dumb as the right yelling let’s go Brandon

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 11 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

and by a member of their local community he meant a member of their church,

i lived there, i know their dogwhistles

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 8 months ago

Exactly. Big dog whistle for Utah. It took me a couple of years to catch on to it but once you know it, it becomes obvious.

It's probably best not to make assumptions before we know for sure.

Same as the motivations behind Charlie Kirk's shooter should not have been assumed to have been either left or right until we know for sure.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 14 points 8 months ago

You're correct, but you are also assuming the media is honest. If I am correct in my assumption that the media (or, at least the mega corporations that own them) are carefully curating favor with the administration, then if these people were "on the right" we'll be told that they are "on the left" anyway.

It’s probably best not to make assumptions before we know for sure.

Right, but we can make educated deductions based on what we know. I tend to agree that (as with the case with Kirk's killer), if any politics left of center were involved, we likely would have heard about it already.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

You are correct, but I will say, their fascist in chief has been demonizing the media, and the right has a track record of domestic terrorism, so while it is possible they were progressive people, chances are they were conservatives

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 11 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Not Republican, MAGA. Republicans don't exist anymore. And we know they were MAGA, because the bomb didn't go off, because MAGAs are predictably virtuosically incompetent. If they were Democrats, the bomb would have worked.

Also Republicans are too cowardly to try to bomb anything. MAGAs are cowardly, too, but the are also breath-takingly stupid, so their stupidity often overwhelms their cowardice, and they do remarkably dumb stuff, like try to storm the Capitol.
