Developer Joe H aka JHDev2006 recently released a PC version of the original Super Mario Bros for the NES. There's both Windows and Linux versions available and you'll need an original SMB ROM for it to run. It supports HD and ultra-wide resolutions and overall looks and plays great.

This is a very well made hack. It's more a remake than a master. It's looks beautiful and the added effects fit right in. There's achievements, and time trials for levels and whole worlds.

It's SMB1, Lost Levels, Nippon Somthing (it's actually a fun game mode), and a whole new original game.

It also has an editor they are updating to this day.

cross-posted from: https://piefed.social/c/emulation/p/1929722/a-look-at-dkcafe-a-donkey-kong-rom-hacks-frontend

Recently I stumbled on the DKcafe frontend. It is an emulation frontend for the original Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Donkey Kong 3,* but also for countless Donkey Kong ROM hacks. What makes this frontend unique is the gamified experience.

DKcafe

When you load the frontend, you end up in an interface that looks like a classic Donkey Kong level. You control Jumpman (Mario) and can jump and climb ladders. But in the background there are several arcade machines. (Initially only one to three, depending on the ROMs you have provided for games). And on the top of the level, Donkey Kong is standing, throwing barrels at you but also coins. By collecting the coins he is throwing, you can unlock more arcade cabinets that are ROM hack variations of the game.
Additionally, while playing the games or ROM Hacks and get a certain amount of score, and you can win trophies, and when you exit the game, you get rewarded with a large amount of coins, unlocking the coins faster.

DKCafe also includes an add-on that you can download separately from the project GitHub page or from inside the front end itself. This add-on includes ROMs and ROM hacks for the home computer versions of the first Donkey Kong game.

Add on

You do not need to provide an emulator for the frontend, it comes with its own emulator called DKWolf, which is based on WolfMame. I am not sure what exactly is different about WolfMame and regular Mame, its GitHub page does not provide an explanation. It just explains what Mame is. I assume it focuses on ROM hacks, but I am not sure. You can also replace it with your own emulator if you want to do that.
The emulator is in the DKWolf folder in the root directory and can be run on its own. It can be configured as a standard MAME, emulator cheats can also be enabled. They seem to work with many ROM hacks but not with all.

Games

The frontend also includes additional features. Like a practice mode to improve your DK skills. The ability to continue and DKTV an alternative viewpoint of the game. Jumpman is fixed to the center of the screen as the camera follows his movements. The camera zooms in further on the action when Jumpman is jumping or hammering.

The ROMs go into the ROM folder in the root directory. You have to provide your own ROMs for the three arcade games. Though I did not manage to get Donkey Kong 3 running with it. The arcade cabinet for the game did not appear in the frontend. When I tried to run DKWolf from the command line with Dkong3 as a parameter, it informed me that all files were missing even though they were in the zip file. And it runs with regular MAME, so I am not sure what is going on there.

DKcafe

DKCafe runs on Windows and Raspberry Pi 4. It also provides instruction to compile it for Ubuntu Linux, but they are a bit complicated. Though it does run with Wine on Linux without any problems unless the Donkey Kong 3 issue is related to that.

In conclusion, I love this idea and would love to see it for other games like Pac-Man, for example.
I also would love if DKcafe would add ROM hacks for Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3. Also maybe for the Game Boy Donkey Kong game from 1994.

After eight months of development, Pokemon White 2 ROM hack Blinding White 2 has been released. Going beyond what we usually see from fifth generation hacks, Blinding White 2 revamps the game with modern Pokemon, new item systems, a number of new rival fights, and a whole heap of quality of life updates. Trainers around the region will now sport much more varied teams to keep you on your toes, with a Hardcore mode available for people who really want to challenge themselves.

So maybe some of you have seen the recent ROM hack come out, by the developer of Pokémon Emerald Seaglass, called Pokémon Lazarus. This one has a far larger scale to everything, it's quite clear that it is a massive undertaking for a sole dev, and most of the community is loving it.

Well, some aren't behaving well. There's been some petty, disgusting feedback from a (as ever) vocal minority. Those who are homophobic, bigots, who are mocking design decisions and the sound (which Nemo, the dev, has created from scratch), some who hate seeing a pride flag.

Anyway, Nemo has decided after this bullshit to step back from the public and stop interacting. We've seen this again and again with developers. And it's getting SO damned exhausting:

With that said, I’ll be taking a step back from the community for a bit. I’ll post bug-fixing and new feature patches to the Development Discord server, but I don’t plan on posting anywhere else for a while. If I go on to develop a new project (which I do have planned!), it will likely be in secret until close to release, if I choose to release it at all. With everything going on in my life (Master’s program, work, real world commitments, etc etc), I guess I’m just not prepared to also handle the bad side of attention on the internet.

Anyway, if you'd like to read my article about the scene and this shitty news for Nemo, as every you can find the link to my post here!

Hornet from Hollow Knight, and of course, Silksong\
Fully featured with CS, including a custom needle attack, and air dash dive

Who needs Silksong when you have Mario 64?

It's a pretty popular romhack for Super Mario World that was released in 2021. I recently discovered that the dev made a full walkthrough with commentary about a year ago. It was really interesting for me to watch :) Link to the hack.

So recently had a hankering for some Pokémon hacks so booted up my old Pokémon Storm Silver ROM (using retroarch with Desmume as emulator).

I spun up a new game and played a bit, but it wouldn't let me save a new game since the ROM had my old save data. I decided to just save the game state with the built in retro arch save state functionality. So beat the champion using save states as alternative save feature with 60 hours on game clock (probably MUCH less due to my abuse of ffw feature).

But when you beat the champion, it dumps you back to the title screen. From there, I can only load my old data (since my current play isn't properly saved in the game data). As such, I can't play any of the post elite four content.

Anyone aware of a workaround where I can erase the games data from a save state? Kinda feels like I'm just SOL.

If I am, let this stand as a warning to other Pokémon fans. Always take the time to clear your old data!

Does anyone have opinions on Revelation vs Emerald Cross? Both are vanilla+ experiences of Pokémon Emerald for the GBA. They both look very good but I would like to enjoy the one that that is the better vanilla+ experience.

For comparison, I'm nearing beating the Pokemon league in Polished Crystal and absolutely love the game.

If you’d like to have a dedicated page(s) (or even an entire site?) for your romhacker work, as a sort of portfolio, we can host it for you for free!

You’ll have FTP / DB access (if necessary) to build your site freely. Your site will be a sub-domain of “romhacks.org”. (If you want a custom domain, you can talk to us about it, but you’ll certainly have to pay for it).

If you’re interested in discussing this, please contact me by PM (Discord), or by e-mail: team@romhackplaza.org.
