Everything #OpenStreetMap related is welcome: software releases, showing of your work, questions about how to tag something, as long as it has to do with OpenStreetMap or OpenStreetMap-related software.

OpenStreetMap is a map of the world, created by people like you and free to use under an open license.

So ive been using OSMAnd~ on F-Droid so far and im quite Happy with it :D
Sadly its UI is quite clunky and i literally could not find my Destination where i had to go to even tho ive downloaded the Entire Map of Germany -.-
Can anyone by chance recomenned me some Good Apps that wouldnt rely on MicroG or can be easily gotten from F-Droid or similiar FOSS Android Stores? :D

Sorry if this is too low-effort or specific; I won't object if it's removed. I just thought the imagery was funny.

From the newsletter

Martijn van Exel has developed the osm-mapper-globe, a visualisation dashboard that enables users to watch OpenStreetMap edits in real time on an interactive globe. The code is available on Codeberg under an ISC licence.

From the weekly newsletter:

Henry Wilkinson has mapped the Dundas West Station in Toronto, Canada, using the LiDAR sensor on an iPhone 17 Pro, in combination with the Niantic Scaniverse app, to capture 3D data. He then reconstructed the digital 3D scene with Meshroom and Blender before uploading the results to OpenStreetMap through JOSM (using the PicLayer plugin) to align imagery, and iD for streamlined indoor tagging. The completed work enabled detailed indoor mapping of the station, now viewable on OpenLevelUp.

First paragraph from the article:

Despite having a passion for technology, I generally upgrade my phone every 6 years or so. One of the features I have been most excited about this time around is the LIDAR sensor on the iPhone 17 Pro. After some initial success using Niantic’s free Scanniverse app to help make furniture decisions while apartment hunting, I decided to have a go at using it to capture some information to feed OpenStreetMap, my favourite open-data obsession.

How mapy learn about current traffic? If I have app installed on the phone, does it help in any way? Or I should have app opened and in navigation mode?

I noticed that even I was driving one route, there was no information on the other device

I like searching for POIs via a query language on Overpass. My queries tend to be quite simple - "get all amenities of x type, in y area that have z tag". The rendered map showing matching POIs is a nice-to-have, but not completely necessary.

What is the best way to do this offline, on Linux? (ideally using software already packaged for Debian, but that's not vital).

I'm imagining a REPL that I can pass a downloaded map to, and then can query and see the results (in an ideal world, rendering them too).

It seems database schemas are close to what I want, but they seem to be designed more for people doing large scale complex queries and building bespoke databases just with the information they want.

Are these tools a good fit for my use case, or is there is a better/simpler way?
