Quick post to answer some basic usage questions that can throw off new users.

Where should I register?

The age old question of fediverse. The answer is pick an instance that is not right-wing and you should be fine.

https://join-lemmy.org/instances makes this very easy. Once you find an instance, just go to its /signup endpoint. For the instance you're reading right now, it would be: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/signup. Another great option is to use the lemmyverse which provides a lot more info about potential instances and communities, including a trust score.

Do I need to create a profile for each instance?

No! Each instance can access each other instance, unless it's been defederated because its admins are toxic (this is why I told you not to join right-wing instances earlier).

I joined an instance, but the community I am interested in is in a different instance

No problem. Simply add the instance domain at the end of the url endpoint.

For example, say you're in lemmy.ml and you realized that stable_diffusion is in lemmy.dbzer0.com. To access it, simply add @lemmy.dbzer0.com at the end of the url after the community name. So:

https://lemmy.ml/c/stable_diffusion@lemmy.dbzer0.com

Or to put it differently, you can access any community, in any instance by adding /c/ (The requivalet of reddit /r/) and then community_name@instance.domain

If this doesn't work, then it's likely this instance is not yet federated with yours. To solve this, you need to search for it. See the next section.

But how do I even find the community I want to if it exists in any of hundreds of instances?

One option is to use the lemmyverse, as it's very user friendly, if you specify which instance if your home, it will automatically convert all links to your own instance.

Alternatively use the use the built-in search.

Note that if you search for an community in an lemmy instance your own instance doesn't yet know about, it won't find it. You need to give it more precice instructions to find it, which require the whole "address". To follow our example above, you would put [!stable_diffusion@lemmy.dbzer0.com](/c/stable_diffusion@lemmy.dbzer0.com) in your search field.

When searching for a community in a new instance, it might take a few minutes to take effect. The first search will not return anything, but if you search again after a couple of minutes, it should appear.

How do I find my community from reddit?

https://sub.rehab/ allows you to search for any subreddit and see if its official community exists in the threadiverse. You can then search for it specifically to subscribe. If you've already registered an account somewhere, make sure you visit the settings in sub.rehab and set your home instance there, so that all links go through it.

Community? Instance?

An instance is a lemmy server hosted by someone. it has its own set of users and communities. lemmy.dbzer0.com is an instance. You can access (almost) every instance from any other instance.

a community is like a subreddit in reddit, or a channel in discord. It's a topic in inside an instance. stable_diffusion is a community inside the instance lemmy.dbzer0.com.

In more plain terms, consider a lemmy instance like a street, and a community like a number on that street. When you write [!stable_diffusion@lemmy.dbzer0.com](/c/stable_diffusion@lemmy.dbzer0.com) you are giving the exact address and number to search for.

I keep seeing the same posts

In you're in a smaller instance and you've subscribed to communities in other places, you might have set up your default visibility to not show them.

Switch your view to Subscribed/Hot to get a similar view like the reddit frontpage.

Switch to All/Hot to get a similar view to reddit /r/all

You can store this setting permanently as default in your user settings

I want to make a button on my site that makes the person surf THE INTERNET, and I'm making a huge list of the most varied stuff you can end up randomly.

I want to add Fediverse sites for the person to find at random, I added the flagships of Peertube, Pixelfed, Funkwhale, Bookwyrm, but for Mastodon/Pleroma/MissKey and Lemmy/Mbin/PixelFed I want to direct the person to selected instances... and so far my whole list list is db0, quokkau and kolektiva social for Mastodon :P

I really don't know much of the Fediverse, can you recommend me more cool instances from Mastodon/Pleroma/MissKey and Lemmy/Mbin/PixelFed?

This has been a contentious topic, sparking much debate but following the Governance post (feddit.org's Zionist bar problem: community ban(s) vote), the Fediverse Anarchist Flotilla has decided to fully defedeate from from Feddit.org.

It follows a model of BDS from pro-Zionist/Israeli sources, showing that views such as genocide denial are not welcome in a polite society. This further backs up the FAF's strong commitment to not supporting pro-Zionism as with it's Golden Rule #8

Users had expressed some reservations around losing access to feddit.org communities, some of which have dbzer0 hosted alternatives such as !europe@lemmy.dbzer0.com, !buyfromeu@lemmy.dbzer0.co. Others can be found across the wider fediverse such as !buyeuropean@feddit.uk.

But wait, isn't it un-Anarchist to not support complete free speech? Not at all my dear friend. Voluntary association is a core Anarchist principle, and as such exercising the freedom to stop associating with others is part of that. If the Feddit.org admin team decides to change their stance of support for Israel, perhaps the community may vote to refederate in the future.

anyone else have this issue? browser crashed twice just now trying to post and use the site, nothing else is running on my OS that would have caused the crash. monitoring htop suggests its only this tab, Im on Firefox 147.0.4. browser is also slow when I go to sort comments by top, it will freeze my OS before loading. just curious if this is a known issue or not

Unfortunately Photon uses a CSS framework instead of meaningful CSS class names, so this is a hack that simply shrinks every image in every top comment's thread, so YMMV.

I can't see my any posts or comments previous to this account getting one year old. Either from the app or the web.

Another weird thing is that I can only see comments on to my new posts in the inbox, if I browse into the post I can only see my replies, as replies to nothing if I use voyager app, through the web I the comments section is empty even though it says there's comments.

PD: right now it says there are three comments here, but I can't see them. I replied to one of them, so there's one the haven't reached my inbox.

Edit: When I look into the comments sections, half of the comments are missing.

My profile is now empty, I can't see any of my posts, comments, messages or anything. It's like I managed to block myself. From my account on .world I still can see my profile here.

edit: the inbox is ok, that one was on me, I didn't notice the unread toggle, but the other one it's still empty, there's only this post and a comment I did yesterday to test.

Hello again peeps, I come back to you with more exciting news. After last months vote passed to accept quokk.au as a member of the FAF, the vote on their end only just marginally failed for a 1-vote tiebreaker. The primary reservation people expressed back then was not wanting to follow the FAF defederations/bans as many people chose quokk.au explicitly due to their defederation list, particularly of Marxist-Leninist-friendly instances like hexbear.

Given however that there was willingness from admins on both sides to collaborate and provide mutual aid to each other due to our shared values, we went back to the drawing board to find a compromise. The main issue was that we wanted a way where we didn't want to sacrifice the tight integration of the FAF proper, but there is also an option "softer" version of the flotilla integration, which is less technical and more political.

So we came down to having two different tiers of membership in the flotilla

Consorts: These are the fully integrated members of the FAF. For all accounts and purposes, they count as a single instance, as they follow the same rules, bans and federations and their members get voting rights on all proposals. I.e. the original vision I proposed.

Companions: These are the more politically-only aligned instances.

  • They don't have to follow the FAF defederations and bans so they have no say in those either. However companion instances can optionally chose to follow defederations and/or bans, which allows them to vote on them as well.
  • They can take part in the voting for rules which don't refer to deferations or bans, and they have to follow those rules (e.g. golden rules, radical admin recalls etc). They are also allowed to propose new rule changes as well for the whole FAF.
  • They get access to FAF private matrix channels and benefit from our resident technical expertise and moderation experiences.

Naturally a Companion instance can at any time become a Consort by simply on-boarding existing FAF defeds & bans and therefore immediately get future voting rights for those as well.

After we reached internal consensus on these two tiers, we then re-approached @Quokka@quokk.au to see if that would cover their reservations and we're today happy to announce that they've officially joined the FAF.

On a personal note: It's been always my passion to grow a system that is not only technically robust, but also politically as well, and the only way we can achieve this is by reinforcing the mutual aid ties between aligned actors, while providing enough independence for self-expression. This is yet another step in that direction and I hope it can lead to more versatile fediverse structures like feeler networks and whatnot.

Where are the servers for lemmy.dbzer0.com located?

EU? US? Elsewhere?

I am trying to move away from US services as much as possible, hence me asking.

Happy new year ya 'orrible lot!

Another year and what a year 2026 has been already, amirite?

Tech

First let's talk about new tech stuff for this instance

Upgrades

So let's start things simple, the Divisions by zero instance has now been upgraded to 0.19.15, the latest current lemmy version. All the other frontends we offer have also been brought up to date to their latest versions as well.

Threativore flotilla integration

Threativore has been updated so that it correctly counts votes from flotilla users as local votes. However it's a bit tricky to allow it to determine if a user is a supporter or not, as it doesn't have access to stuff like user emails. For now, I decided the simplest option was to create an account aliasing setup. This means that if you're supporting the flotilla through the Ko-Fi or Liberapay buttons of /0, but your primary account is on anarchist.nexus (or any other instance really), you can create an account on lemmy.dbzer0.com (if you don't have one already) and then PM the threativore bot with this command from that account.

threativore add alias: https://<instance.domain>/u/<username>

Once you do that, all your votes on governance threads will be automatically linked to your /0 account, which also ensures there's no vote duplication by accident.

2025 Notable Events

Let's also take a look back at what happened in 2025

The Fediverse Anarchist Flotilla is launched

Continuing our experiments in how far we can push radical democracy on the internet, we expanded our fediverse fleet into the flotilla, with the addition of anarchist.nexus. And just this month, we're already considering onboarding the first 3rd party instance into the fleet. Things are looking bright!

Haphash protection

Last month, we finally implemented Proof-of-Work protection to try and limit the AI-scraping scourge on these waves. The results one month in are very positives, with very little slowdowns reported anymore and much less headaches for your local sysadmins.

Staff

As the stress of being a fediverse admin degrades our brains, so we need fresh ~~victims~~ blood to help us run the ship. So we've added some more flotilla admins who have been taking to these waters quite nicely. At the same time some of our other admins have stepped back or are focusing more on the smaller anarchist.nexus which is also perfectly fine and exactly what the flotilla is meant to support.

Instance

/0 is officially the 4th largest instance by created accounts and 6th largest by MAU. Pretty neat for our little weird corner of the internet, no?

Membership

And now of course, the moment you've all been waiting for

Funding

As always, m@tes continue to be amazing, more than fully funding our operations for the past year with tons to spare. Anyway, this year I decided to switch the goal to yearly (since I keep procrastinating saying anything about it anyway)

Please continue being awesome and help ensure we can stay online for years to come!

Ko-Fi Liberapay
Ko-fi Liberapay

Finally I want to remind everyone that this is all only possible due to all y'all consistently interacting and growing our communities. Keep at it and we'll keep providing the space to do so!

Ahoy m@tes, the scraping bot situation has been escalating recently, as you all may have already noticed by the recent site instability and 5xx error responses. @tenchiken@anarchist.nexus has been scrambling to block new scraping subnets as they appear, but these assholes keep jumping providers so it's been an endless loop and constant firefighting.

I finally had enough and decided to onboard a Proof-of-Work countermeasure, very much like Anubis which has been very popular on the fediverse lately. However I went with Haphash which has been especially designed around haproxy (our reverse proxy of choice) and is hopefully much more lightweight.

The new PoW shield has already been activated on both Divisions by Zero on Fediseer as well. It's not active on all URLs,. but it should be protecting those which have the most impact on our database, which is what was causing the actual issue. You should notice a quick loading screen on occasion while it's verifying you.

We've already seen a significant reduction in 5xx HTTP errors, as well as a slight reduction in traffic, so we're hoping this will make a good impact in our situation.

Please do let us know if you run into any issues, and also let us know if you feel any difference in responsiveness. The first m@ates already feel it's all snappier, but that just be placebo.

And let's hope the next scraping wave is not pwned residential botnets, or we're all screwed >_<

Ahoy mateys!

First, huge a thanks to everyone who volunteered to help out! If I haven't already sent you a thank you message, I will do so today.

After some discussion, we've decided to add two new admins to the crew in this round. Please welcome to the team @kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com and @SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com/@SnokenKeekaGuard@anarchist.nexus! They will be responsible for processing applications and dealing with reports, as well as contributing their input and expertise to the existing admin teams for dbzer0 and anarchist.nexus.

I'm also happy to announce that we've also recruited @y0kai@anarchist.nexus to help out @tenchiken@anarchist.nexus with sysadmin related work for https://anarchist.nexus/.

These additions to the admin team are intended to:

  • strengthen the diversity of the admin team;
  • ensure we have faster response times for approving applications and dealing with reports across multiple time zones; and
  • spread out the workload to avoid admin burnout.

Please join me in thanking them for providing mutual aid, and in wishing them a very warm welcome to the admin team!

Cheers, Unruffled!

It seems cloudflare has gone down and brought down half the internet, including half the fediverse. Lucky for us, the divisions by zero, is not hosted in cloudflare for that reason. Unlucky for the flotilla, the anarchist.nexus is on CF.

Nevertheless, switch over to your /0 account to continue using the threadiverse as usual.

shakes first Tenchikeeeeeeeen!

This is a proposal to have a weekly event where users could nominate and vote on a “Dbzer0 user of the week” to promote community engagement, also it would be fun as hell, this event could happen like on a weekend and could run from friday to sunday or friday to saturday

It has come to my attention that there is some minor unrest on Hexbear due to statements they believe I made that they did not appreciate. there has been some small misunderstanding regarding them, so allow me, dear reader, to make my position clear so these terrible rumors can be put to rest.

some time ago, another user on our matrix asked for tips on trolling Hexbear in their communities. specifically, they asked what might be said that would garner the most rage. as I generally consider myself to be the obliging sort, I offered what pearls of wisdom I could.

now, a thoughtful reader might wonder why I didn't react with abject horror at the idea of someone trolling Hexbear, for that, I can only say that perhaps I thought it was proper comuppence for the brigading and harassment Hexbear used to perpetrate across the fediverse.

but I digress. the specific pearls of wisdom I offered were as such.

le gasp! how terrible! what scoundrel, what worthless cur would say that the soviet civilians deserved such a fate! genocide! fascist! liberal!

as you might have guessed, discerning reader, Hexbear posits that such a scoundrel is me. they insist, that by saying the soviets deserved what they got, that I am actively supporting the genocide of twenty-seven million civilians. there are two problems with this, however.

one, I never said civilians. this is a word put into my mouth by tankies that are too fucking stupid to understand plain english. one would think that it is pretty obvious that it wasn't some poor farmer that was invading Poland for profit, but if one were to think such, then one wouldn't be a braindead tankie shitstain, and would instead be someone at least capable of the level of higher thought that evolution gave a jellyfish. it's pretty obvious to normal people that the ones gleefully invading other countries alongside the nazis were, in fact, soldiers. here they were at least right when they assumed I was gleefully celebrating the deaths of those soldiers. they fought with the nazis, they invaded other countries, and they don't get to absolve themselves of working with the nazis just because hitler turned on them, and because tankies think that the country that supposedly single-handily fought and won WW2 are also the poor victims of the war who had no choice in their actions.

two, there were no soviet civilians, merely innocent asian/eastern european souls that were held hostage by the soviet oligarchy and forced into starvation and destitution by an authoritarian system that valued propaganda more than human beings. the vast majority of those people probably would not have chosen to live in a dystopian hellhole were they given a chance, any more than the average North Korean wants to starve to death under the Kims. they were as much soviets as you or I, merely people with no freedom, and no other option but to live under the crushing boot of the imperialist USSR. they didn't help the nazis, because they were powerless in the face of the state.

neither of these two points has stopped Hexbear from whipping themselves into a frothing echo chamber of self-righteous disgust and anger, and demanding that I be removed from my mod positions and banned. a demand which has, so far, fallen on deaf ears that are used to the utter bullshit so often spewed by these feckless internet warriors. if there was an award for arguing in bad faith, we all know the reeking denizens of the lower planes we all colloquially call The Triad would win it.

as you probably have gathered by now, this is not an apology. I did not do anything wrong, especially not what they have accused me of, and so I will not apologize for it. not that they would be willing to consider such an apology anyway, because for them there is only one truth, and that is that they are always right, and everyone who is not them is an enemy and always wrong.

now, they have banned me, and so they can't see this, so I will instead tag @cowbee@lemmy.ml, a known affiliate of these heathens, who spent three paragraphs the other day downplaying the persecution of LGBT+ in the USSR before grudgingly using a mere two sentences in admitting the treatment.

my one regret, of course, is that since I have now blocked everyone from The Triad, I won't be able to read the no doubt angry replies they are fiercely typing out, in which they'll likely pour over my history to try and find something they can spin as damning evidence to back up their preconceptions. actually, now that I consider it, I find I don't regret that at all.

in conclusion, I want to say thank you to the comrades that have supported me through these almost trying times, fuck you to the haters who want to be me, and thank you to the haters who made the thread about me on c/Slop like I asked. you're the real MVP!

as this post pointed out, I was an asshole, And I took trolling too far, genocide denial or harming the community was not my intention as I was trying to find reasons to troll hexbear through my two accounts, and was spurred on by members of the community with alternative intentions that didn’t occur to me at the time, such as _cryptagion

as shown here, a message from the /0 matrix:

I do not represent Dbzer0 or AN in anyway possible, and that post doesn’t represent my views at all, it was just a shitty attempt at humour that went too far, you could consider this an apology, you have every right to hate me, but if you all have the space in your hearts to forgive me, it would be much appreciated.

Searches come up empty.

I can /reach/ the communities if I craft the right URL. But it’s a bit inconvenient that searching does not work -- at least, not in the Alexandria client or whatever it’s called.

Hey peeps, it seems out instance is suddenly experiencing some intermittent slowdowns, and the occasional 503 error. Typically this means we're being hit with a GenAI scraping wave and these things tend to come and go until we can trace where the load is coming from and stop it. Unfortunately I'm currently AFK so until @tenchiken@lemmy.dbzer0.com can come online and take a look, we just have to live with it. Until then, I suggest you switch to our tesseract frontend, as it seems to be slightly more resistant in my experience, so you might not notice this as much. Alternatively you can use anarchist.nexus to keep browsing the threadiverse from the flotilla.
