Maybe not a great example. I mean, most companies riding the dot com bubble went bust, but many if not most of the big players from back then are still around today in some form or another. Not to mention that the idea of the world wide web changing the physical world and the commerce that takes place on it wasn't wrong either.

Around what year was this issue? Both windows and Linux were pretty unstable until - someone correct me on this - 2012? Windows 8 was the last unrecoverable crash I had. Oddly never had an issue with Linux, but I know it happens, I've just been lucky.

Ooh! I can answer this! He made a joke about someone in his life that was trans. It hit the media that he was doing jokes about trans people. So he tried to explain how he wasn't transphobic by telling a bunch of actual transphobic jokes, which was certainly a choice that was made. That turned a lot of people off, so he followed the laughs.

The first "new" Chappelle special is wonderful! No more offensive to any one group than any other. His follow up was mostly good, but some cringing at some bad takes. Clips thereafter are pretty.... Well, you see what thread we are in. 🙃

Silverwing was a show that used to come on Disney XD at like 2:00am. I remember watching it on nights I couldn't sleep. I remember nothing about it other than it being pretty good, at least better than anything else on at that time.

Gotcha! Yes, I had misunderstood. I thought the issue was more ADHD induced insomnia rather than ADHD induced prevention of routine.

How long - ie consecutive nights - did you try going to bed with no screen time an hour before bed? I get the draw of "one thing to focus on", but your brain takes a while to adjust to the new normal of "no high octane input before bed time."

Just being real, and I really do believe that you tried, but it really undermines your call for help and support at bed time when you state your doctor's advice to not watch TV an hour before bed in the same paragraph as describing how you still watch TV while trying to go to sleep at night.

I prefer Gordon Ramsey's content outside of the US better because he is often less angry for angriness sake, and often because someone is doing something that will get someone sick or hurt. To me, that is what healthy anger looks like. An alert system that drives you to make changes and demand changes of others for the benefit and safety of everyone.

That probably isn't worded the best, and I am no philosopher or psychiatrist, but it is a worldview that has been healthy and helpful for me.

You didn't mention "20 FOSS Cigarettes." A typical pack of cigarettes is around 20, and FOSS stands for "Free (and) Open Source Software." This generally means that people can view, edit, distribute, and sometimes even sale programs they didn't themselves create. Many prominent FOSS projects use a fair bit of Perl code.

The fact that it launched and didn't have a shopping cart for 3 years is all it takes to know that it was never intended to be a serious competitor. A simple shopping cart is trivial to implement with modern programming tools, and even if it wasn't, it should be part of the minimum viable product for any digital store front.

You'd make that bet, but I wouldn't. And only one of us is guaranteed to have money walking out of the casino

Monopoly is definitely the word, but they also don't appear to be overly abusive about their market position.

It doesn't rely on Neural Networks, but it does rely on gradient descent/hill climbing, which is basically what a neural network does under the hood.

Even though he left after their second album, "Motorcade of Generosity" and "Fashion Nugget" will always be hugely influential to me personally, and Greg's contributions will not be forgotten for many years to come.

It was my first time flying. It was fun!

"Our columnist asks his favorite acoustic players how their hometowns, new and old, have changed the music they make.

As musicians, we tend to put most of our mental energy into the “next thing”: that next song, show, tour, or piece of gear. The beauty of music-making is that there is always somewhere new to go, but it’s also important to remember that we all came from somewhere. In this column, I connect with some excellent acoustic players about the places that shaped their playing and their craft, where they started and where their music has taken them."

I know this isn't strictly about guitar, but I figured that the main theme was close enough and that the video fits the vibe of this community.

See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn't use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don't agree to their terms, then I don't get access to their new products. That sucks, but fine - I don't use their services except for the TV itself, and honestly, I'd rather by a dumb TV with a streaming box anyway, but I can't find those anymore.

Anyway, the new terms are about waiving your right to a class action lawsuit. It's weird to me because I'd never considered filing a class action lawsuit against Roku until this. They shouldn't be able to hold my physical device hostage until I agree to new terms that I didn't agree at the time of purchase or initial setup.

I wish Roku TVs weren't cheap walmart brand sh*t. Someone with some actual money might sue them and sort this out...

EDIT: Shout out to @testfactor@lemmy.world for recommending the brand "Sceptre" when buying my next (dumb) TV.

EDIT2: Shout out to @0110010001100010@lemmy.world for recommending LG smart TVs as a dumb-TV stand in. They apparently do require an agreement at startup, which is certainly NOT ideal, but the setup can be completed without an internet connection and it remembers input selection on powerup. So, once you have it setup, you're good to rock and roll.
